Requirements and Expectations

NURS 120 students are expected to read the course syllabus and understand the course requirements.
It is understood that a student will meet with the course instructor to discuss any requirements that are
not clear.
NURS 120 students are expected to exhibit classroom behavior that is appropriate for a positive learning
environment. Interrupting, inappropriate talking or whispering during lecture, disrespect, insensitivity
to fellow students and instructors, and angry outbursts are unacceptable.
NURS 120 students are expected to be on time for lecture in order to receive participation points.
Course instructors MUST be notified by students if they expect to be late or absent.
NURS 120 Everett Community College Fall 2018

NURS 120 students are expected to take the exams at the scheduled time. By exception and with prior
agreement, students may take an exam late for a reasonable cause. When such exception has been
granted students may be held to a 100% grading standard (no curve).
NURS 120 students are expected to successfully complete the ATI test in Fundamentals in order to
progress to the next level of the Nursing Program. ATI tests are taken at the completion of the quarter
as a proctored exam. If not successful after one attempt, students will retake the exam the following day
at home after remediation. Retakes require a higher level of achievement, but can be retaken more than
once until a passing level is achieved. If you do not pass the first time, you MUST upload certificate of
completion with remediated grade. Grades for the quarter will be posted once ATI tests are successfully
completed. If you are successful in achieving recommended grade for proctored exam, you will receive
5 extra credit points toward your assignments grade, NOT your theory/test grade.

As a member of the discipline of nursing it is imperative that you are able to establish and maintain
open, honest, and respectful communication with your peers, faculty, and clients. It is an essential
component of the professional nursing role in today’s world and an expectation of 2 nd quarter nursing
students. As students participate in group activities, relate to peers, faculty, agency staff, and clients,
they will be assessed for their ability to work collaboratively, respectfully, and effectively.

Use of tape recorders or cell phones is not allowed during class or clinical practicum without instructor
permission. Cell phones should be off or in silent mode and kept out of sight.

Attendance and Participation

NURS 120 students are expected to be present for mandatory experiences including case studies,
exams, skills demonstrations, simulation and check offs. Absences of required activities occurring during
class, lab, or care management will require make-up work at the instructor discretion.
Attendance to clinical experiences is MANDATORY and make up time may not be available, resulting in
loss of experience and points gained from clinical assignments. Please refer to Attendance and Make-up
Experiences in your student handbook for further information.

Teaching Methods
Teaching will take place in a classroom, laboratory and clinical setting. Methods include case studies,
NCLEX type practice questions with discussion, ATI modules, simulation labs, practice labs and hands on
experience at clinical sites.

Assignments
Assignments for units and labs are posted on Canvas, or may be handed out in class. Some assignments
are preparatory work for lecture and are due prior to the start of lecture. It is the student’s
responsibility to know what is due.

Assignments may be turned in as a paper copy or online on Canvas as instructed. Specific instructions
will be given with each assignment and it is the student’s responsibility to know and follow these
instructions.
Extenuating circumstances, which prevent a student’s completion of assignments on the scheduled
date, must be communicated to the instructor prior to the due date. Failure to make such arrangements
will result in loss of partial or complete credit for an activity or assignment—this will be at the discretion
NURS 120 Everett Community College Fall 2018

of the instructor based on the specific activity/assignment. All assignments must be turned in for
completion of the course, even if determined no points will be awarded.

Samples of student work may be saved for examples of NURS 120 assignments and grading for purposes
of program accreditation. Students may decline by emailing the instructors and stating they do not wish
their coursework to be used for this purpose.

Designated skills (subcutaneous and IM injections, medication administration, catheter insertion, sterile
dressing change, and administering medications by feeding tube) require check off by the instructor. A
satisfactory performance of these skills will be demonstrated prior to the start of the clinical practicum.
The procedure for skills demonstration check offs is located on Canvas.
Clinical Simulation experiences may occur in the skills lab or simulation lab. Grading and expectations
will occur prior to assigned experiences. Check off forms for skills demonstration can be found on
Canvas. All clinical simulation requires that the student be in full uniform, including name badge.

Several quizzes will be administered during the quarter. Some quizzes will be administered in class prior
to content and some on Canvas as practice once content has been covered in class as a reinforcement of
that unit. In class quizzes will be unannounced and hand graded, worth 5 points. Canvas quizzes must
be completed within the time limit announced with the quiz. Canvas quizzes may only be opened once,
so must be completed once opened. No notes, textbooks, or other resources should be used when
taking the quizzes as they are utilized as a tool to focus your studying. Canvas quiz grades are recorded
as taken or not, you do not get points correlated to number of correct answers.

Exams
Math Exam
 25-point, free response exam. A 90% is required to pass.
 Students will have three attempts to successfully pass the math exam. Only the score on the first
attempt will be calculated as a part of the NURS 120 grade.
 Students who are not able to successfully pass the math exam with a minimum score of 90% on
two attempts will have a student improvement plan implemented.
 A calculator (not a cell phone) may be used for math problems on any exam. Students may not
share calculators. All calculations must be shown on the exam in dimensional analysis.

Content Exams (5)

 Students are responsible to bring a test scantron form and number 2 lead pencils to each exam.
 All exams must be taken on the scheduled date. Extenuating circumstances, which prevent a
student’s attendance, must be communicated to the instructor prior to the examination. Failure
to notify the instructor will result in loss of all credit for the test. If permission is granted to take
an exam outside of the scheduled time, a different version of the examination may be given.
 Exams are timed at one and a half minutes (1.5 minutes) per question.
 Group testing will occur after each theory exam. This is optional, any student can opt out via
email up until 0800 the day prior to the exam. Once group testing is complete, instructors will
grade group test and add 2 points to individuals exam score for a group test score of A or add 1
point to individual exam score for a group test score of B. Group extra points cannot give any
individual greater than 100% on exam.
 Test results will be posted on Canvas, usually by the afternoon of the exam day.
NURS 120 Everett Community College Fall 2018

 Individual test review is available as requested with the instructors or success/retention

specialist. The purpose of a test review is to learn better test taking skills, and to review content
to assure understanding of correct answers. No note taking can be done at this time, except to
jot down topics needed for review.
 Students must meet with their instructor if a score of less than 80% is earned on any exam.

Evaluation and Grading

A final grade for NURS 120 is based on points earned in the following (points are approximate and may
change throughout the quarter).
Assignment Points % Final Grade
Exams 325 24.9%
Quizzes 35 2.68%
Lecture Participation (5 points/lecture) 80 6.13%
Nature of Disease Worksheet/Discussion 10 0.77%

Your points for all of the above can be found under “Grades” on Canvas. A final grade for NURS 120 is
assigned by calculating a percentage of total points available in the course. The following percentages
are used to calculate grades:
94-100% = A 83-86% = B 73-71% = C 63-66% = D
90-93% = A- 80-82% = B- 70-72% = C- Below 62% = F
87-89% = B+ 77-79% = C+ 67-69% = D+

Minimum passing grade in NURS 120 requires:

 80% or better average on the exams as a whole (including the math exam)
 no rounding up will occur
 80% or better in the entire course
 Satisfactory clinical performance as reflected on the clinical evaluation tool

In the event any of the above three criteria are not met, the instructor will remove you from the course
and a “V” will be submitted for your course grade to reflect non-passing of the course, even though
points may reflect a higher grade. There will be no rounding up of grades. Points must be met to reach
the above criteria.

Late Work
NURS 120 Everett Community College Fall 2018

NURS 120 students are expected to submit assignments on time. Late assignments may be awarded no
points, but are required to be completed to receive credit for the course. Extenuating circumstances must
be communicated to the instructor prior to the due date to arrange for exceptions to this policy.
Academic Integrity
Please review the Ethics Policy as outlined in the Student Handbook. If any plagiarism or
academic dishonesty is suspected, situation will be discussed with instructor and/or associate
dean. Consequences could include loss of points or dismissal from the program.

Care Management: Laboratory and Clinical Practicum

Care Management Description

Through the use of case studies, scenarios, clinical simulations, select client care situations, and
special projects, students integrate and apply the art and science of nursing. The course uses
nursing process, critical thinking, and self-reflective activities as the basis for collaborative
learning in the formulation, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care for adults
experiencing selected health alterations presented in NURS 120.

Care Management Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this portion of the course the student will be able to:

1. Integrate knowledge of pharmacology, nutrition, communication, growth and

development, and other related theories into client care management.
2. Apply knowledge of alterations in health, diagnostic testing, medical interventions,
and nursing principles to the monitoring, teaching, supporting, and motivation of
clients.
3. Demonstrate a sense of creative inquiry when examining client data.
4. Demonstrate being an active learner and developing a personal voice.
5. Demonstrate a beginning skill in working collaboratively and collectively to create
and respond to selected care management situations.
6. Apply concepts, knowledge, and skills from adjunct courses, life experiences, and
client care learning activities to the care management needs of adults with selected
health alterations.
7. Develop nursing care plans for adults in tertiary client care situations.

Nursing Role Performance

In order to pass the Care Management section of NURS 120 the student must earn a rating of
Satisfactory all critical criterion on the NURS 120 Clinical Evaluation Tool. If a rating of
unsatisfactory is received in any one of the criterion the student will not pass the Care
Management section of the course.
The student who is not passing the theory portion of the course (as indicated by exam or
overall scores) prior to the last week of care management may not be allowed to provide
patient care.
NURS 120 Everett Community College Fall 2018

Care Management Expectations

Protective Equipment
All students are required to carry a CPR barrier on their person at all times during Care
Management. Small, easy to use barriers are available through SNO. This is a one-time
purchase and will only need to be purchased again in the event you need to use it while giving
CPR.

Required Items
All students are expected to have on their person at all times during Care Management: EvCC
name tag, gait belt, stethoscope, and black pen. In addition, NURS 120 students find the
following items useful: penlight, small calculator, and small bandage scissors.

Attendance

NURS 120 students are required to attend all Care Management activities as noted on the
course calendar. All lecture/discussions and other section experiences are required.
Extenuating circumstances that prevent a student's attendance must be communicated to the
appropriate instructor prior to the absence. Loss of credit for the experience and/or course
failure will result if the student fails to notify an instructor of an absence. Absence from clinical
experiences will require make-up experiences. (Make-up experiences are not available or
provided to students who are not successfully passing the course at the end of the quarter.)
When make-up experiences are required, they may or may not be available within the time
frame of the quarter. If such experiences are not available during a quarter, students will
receive an Incomplete for the quarter and may be required to remunerate the instructor for
clinical time. No more than two clinical days can be made up. Absences beyond this limit
require a withdrawal from the course.

When a student’s absence is related to an illness which, in the professional judgment of the
nursing instructor, could potentially jeopardize patient safety, the instructor may require that
the student not be allowed to return to the clinical area until provided with a physician’s
statement that the student’s health condition has been resolved.

Preparation for Care Management Learning Experiences

NURS 120 students are expected to be prepared for each Care Management experience.
Students are required to come to class and clinical experiences prepared to discuss and/or offer
care related to specific clients or case studies. Written materials (case studies, clinical prep
work, journals) will be turned in to the instructors as indicated.
NURS 120 Everett Community College Fall 2018
