Duration: 1.5 hours
TOTAL

PART A (20 marks)

1. Differentiate between:
a) liquids and gases
b) real fluids and ideal fluids
c) specific weight and specific volume
(6 marks)

2. Define pressure head. Obtain an expression for pressure head at a point in a fluid.
(4 marks)

3. Differentiate between:
a) absolute pressure and gauge pressure
b) simple manometer and differential manometer
(4 marks)
4. Define the following and give one practical example of each:
a) Laminar flow
b) Turbulent flow
c) Steady uniform flow
(6 marks)

PART B (30 marks)

1. One litre of crude oil weighs 9.6 N. Calculate the specific weight, mass density, specific volume, and
specific gravity of the crude oil.
(5 marks)

2. If the velocity distribution of a fluid over a plate is given by u = (3/4)y – y2, where u is the velocity
in metre per second at a distance of y metres above the plate, determine the shear stress at
y = 0.15 metre. Take a dynamic viscosity of a fluid as 8.5 x 10-5 kg.s/m2.
(4 marks)

3. The diameters of a small and large pistons of a hydraulic jack are 2 cm and 10 cm, respectively. An
oil of 0.85 specific gravity is connected between the pistons. A force of 60 N is applied in a small
piston. Calculate the load lifted in the large piston if small piston is 20 cm above the large piston.

TEST 1 CMT255
SEMESTER MARCH – JULY 2021
Duration: 1.5 hours

4. A differential manometer is connected at the two points A and B as shown in the figure below. At
B, air pressure is 7.848 N/cm2(absolute), calculate the absolute pressure at A.

(6 marks)

5. A pipe 1 of 450 mm in diameter branches into two pipes 2 and 3 of diameters 300 mm and 200 mm
respectively as shown in the figure below. If the average velocity in pipe 1 is 3 m/s, calculate:
a) the discharge through pipe 1.
b) velocity in pipe 3 if the average velocity in pipe 2 is 2.5 m/s.
c) the Reynold’s number of flows in pipe 3. Is the flow laminar or turbulent? Take a dynamic
viscosity of a fluid as 8.5 x 10-4 N.s/m2.
