Natural Dyes
-Natural Dyes/color were used history.
-Our Ancestors knew they could extract certain colors from certain plants, such as yellow from
goldenrod or purple from berries.
History of Sources of Natural Dyes
-Plants-Henna- used even before 2500BC, Saffron-Mentioned in Bible.
-Insects
-Minerals
Types Of Dyes
(1) Substantive Dyes
-Dyes which requires mordant and simply combining the dyestuff.
-It is made from edible materials.
-They are also a great synthetic direct dyes.
(2) Adjective/Mordant Dyes
-Most natural dyes is done with the use of mordant most commonly heavy metal ions but
sometimes tannins.
-A Mordant remains in the fiber permanently, holding the dye.
How a Mordant Functions?
-It contains with a fiber and dye, both forming a link between dyes and fiber which otherwise
has no affinity for the dye.
-It forms with a dye complex which is insoluble in water and thus gives a fast colour.
Sources Of Natural Dyes/ Shades/ Colors
-Orange- Abdera Bark, Bloodroot, Sassafras, Onion, Hichmen, Carrot, Burberry, Turmerie,
Butternut, Eucalyptus.
-Green-Toa Tree, Spinach, Sareel, lilac, camellia, snapdragon, grass, red pine, red onion, peach,
coneflower, peppermint, purple milkweed, chamomile.
-Grey/Black-Iris, Sumac, carob, oak gals, walnut, rusty nails.
-Red-Elderberry, red leaves, sumac, dandelion, beets, bamboo, crab appie, rose, madder, Kool-
Aid, Japanese yew, wild ripe, blackberries, hibiscus.
-Yellow/Wheat-bay leaves, barberry, saffron, onion, heather, marigold, sumac, celery
-Blue/Purple-dogwood, wood, mulberries, saffron, grapes, blueberries, cornflower, blackberry,
indigo, red cedar, raspberry, orogen grape, purple iris.
Printing-
A Process For producing a pattern on yarns, warp, fabric or carpet.
Style of Printing
1-Direct Printing Style
-The fabric is prepared and mordanted.
-the dye is painted and printed on fabric. The areas, which comes in contact with the dye, will
show color and thus form the design.
-Example-Ajrakh And Kalamkari.
2-Mordant Resist Style
-This Method Involved the direct application of the color design to the fabric and is the most
common method of the textile printing.
-Example-Sanganer Printing
