Propaganda Techniques used to influence opinions, emotions, attitudes or behavior.

❖ It appeals to the emotions not the intellect.


❖ It is not negative or positive.
❖ The purpose is to persuade.

7 Propaganda Techniques

1. Name- Calling - also called stereotyping or labeling


Ex. Burger King- slanted comparison at the two fast food chains (McDonalds and
Burger King)
2. Glittering Generalities - vague, broad statements that will connect with the audience's
beliefs and values
Ex. Things go better with coke
3. Transfer - an effort to transfer your approval of something you respect and approve of to
another something that the propagandist wants you to approve of
Ex. Manny Pacquiao train very hard for his fight but he feels pain every training so
he takes Alaxan FR to relieve the pain.
4. Testimonial - a famous person or a celebrity endorses a certain view, they testify to the
idea or the product
Ex. Marian Rivera, together with the other artists, endorses the new and improved
Kopiko Blanca.
5. Plain Folks - works in a way to establish that the speaker is regular and ordinary and
has the same views and opinions as the people he is appealing to
Ex. A little boy that could be anyone is advertising OREO.
6. Card Stacking - uses only those facts and details that support their argument
Ex. Burger King’s SATISFRIES, 40% less fat and 30% less calories
7. Bandwagon - influencing people by telling them how everyone is using the same product
or is true to the same ideology
Ex. Pepsi commercial that pushed forth the slogan “the choice of a new generation

Reflection

Propaganda is a must for every student to understand not just as a part of their studies. They
need to learn the different types of propaganda as it will help them determine what they really
must believe in as they progress towards an independent life.
