EAST ASIAN TRADITIONAL/FOLK
MUSIC LET US KNOW

In

this learning activity sheet, you will learn about the prominent
features of the vocal music of East Asian Countries (Japan, China,
and Korea). Vocal music is music made specifically for voices. It
may be performed with or without instruments while Instrumental
music is made solely for instruments. Also, we shall explore the
beauty of East Asian Music especially its functions and
compositions.

LET US REVIEW

CHINA
FORMS OF MUSIC:
Ya-yiieh–courtmusicofChina,themusicof
nobility. Two Kinds of Ya-yiieh
1. Yiieh-Hsuan – music performed in the garden fronting the hall
with dancers.
a. Wen –wu – civil dance
b. Wu-wu – militarydance
2. T’angko – music performed inside the hall to give honor to the
king and his family.
Yiieh-shuan is performed in the garden fronting the hall where
rituals and ceremonials were held. This is accompanied by two
dances, the wen-wu or civil dance and the wu-wu or military
dance

TRADITONAL/FOLK MUSIC
Mo li Hua - Traditional Chinese song with a beautifully
gentle and lyrical melody. The lyrics about the jasmine flower also
turn it into a love song. The song describes a custom of giving
jasmine flowers, popular in the southern Yangtze delta region of
China. Another version describes the fear of plucking the flower.

JAPAN
FORMS OF MUSIC:

Shonyo is a classic Buddhist chant. This chant is recognizable


because it is highly ornamented, often used bells or chimes which
later included other percussions., it is rhythmically free, and is
sung unaccompanied in chorus
Gagaku– means “refined”. It is ancient imperial court music and
dance is a type of Japanese classical music that has been
performed at the Imperial Court in Kyoto for several centuries.

Bugaku pertains to music accompanied by dancing

Kabuki- is a classical Japanese dance-drama. Kabuki theatre is


known for the stylization of its drama and the elaborate make-up
worn by some of its performers.

TRADITONAL/FOLK MUSIC
Sakura - Cherry Blossoms is a traditional Japanese folk
song depicting spring, the season of cherry blossoms.

KOREA
FORMS OF MUSIC:
Two Categories of Korean Traditional Music
1. Chong-ak – music for the ruling class that is expressed in a
refined and elegant manner.
Chong-ak means literally "right (or correct) music", and its
tradition includes both instrumental and vocal music, which were
cultivated mainly by the upper-class literati of the Joseon society
(Chong-ak “music for the noble classes”). Chong-ak also refers
to ensemble music for men of high social status outside of the
court. In this category, three important terms are a-ak{also known
as elegant music}, tang-ak, and hyang-ak.
a. A-ak – music used inside the hall.
b.Mingan – music used outside the hall.
2. Sog-ak – music of the common people.

Sog-ak or minsogak [secular music] is a category of Korean
music traditionally associated with the lower classes or for the
general public and are vibrant and energetic. It includes genres
such as pansori and minyo.
1. Pansori is a kind of music presented to audiences by skilled vocal
singers and drummers. But even the unskilled could sing these
songs. They sang when they worked in the rice paddy or fields,
sang when they went off their lover, and sang when their life was
troubled and
weighing them
down.
2.
Minyo is sung by commoners and is ordinarily written in triple
meter. A popular example of this kind is Arirang.

TRADITONAL/FOLK MUSIC
Arirang - Korean folk song used as a symbol of Korea and
Korean culture. It evokes the feeling

K-POP AND J-POP


K-Pop stands for Korean popular music, a genre that started in
South Korea. It is a modern form of South Korean pop music that
consist of various audio-visual elements such as dance
pop,electronic,hip-hop, pop ballad, R&B, rock, and many more.
J-Pop is an abbreviation of Japanese popular music. It was derived
from electronic rock, Eurobeat, fusion, kauokyoku, new wave, and
techno-pop combined. Instruments in J-pop include the bass guitar,
drum machine, electric guitar, samples, synthesizer, and vocals. which
has an end covered with soft

material.
