Identify the role of each member of the perioperative team.

The perioperative team is subdivided according to the functions of its members:

The nonsterile team
a. Anesthesia provider
 manages the patient’s medication, vital signs, and generalized well-being. Responsible
for inducing and maintaining anesthesia at the required levels and managing untoward
physiologic reactions throughout the surgical procedure.
b. Circulating nurse
 respond to request from the surgeon, anesthesiologist or anesthetist, obtain supplies,
deliver supplies to the sterile field, and carry out the nursing care plan.
c. Perianesthesia nurse
 The main responsibility of a perianesthesia nurse is to monitor patients who are
recovering from anesthesia and medical procedures. To do this, they will regularly
monitor and record patients’ vital signs, including heart rate, blood pressure,
temperature, and respiration rate. They will also watch for any adverse reactions to the
anesthesia.

a. Surgeon

o.
 leader of the surgical team. He or she is ultimately responsible for performing the
rs e
surgery effectively and safely; however, he is dependent upon other members of the
ou urc
team for the patient’s emotional well being and physiologic monitoring.
b. First assistant (second assistant if needed)
 Under the direction of the surgeon, a qualified first assistant helps maintain visibility of
o

the surgical site, controls bleeding, closes wounds, and applies dressings. The first

assistant handles and manipulates tissues and uses instruments to provide hemostasis.

The role of and need for a first assistant will vary with the type of procedure or surgical
specialty, the condition of the patient, and the type of surgical facility.
c. Scrub person
 The scrub person is responsible for establishing and maintaining the integrity, safety,
ed d

and efficiency of the sterile field throughout the surgical procedure. Knowledge of and
ar stu

experience with aseptic and sterile techniques qualify the scrub person to prepare and
arrange instruments and supplies and to facilitate the surgical procedure by providing
the required sterile instruments and supplies. The scrub person must anticipate, plan
for, and respond to the needs of the surgeon and other team members by constantly
is

watching the sterile field.
