I. OBJECTIVES
 To learn about temperature and pressure.
 To be familiarize with different types of instrument.
 To understand the behavior of industrial instruments.

II. INTRODUCTORY PART

Numerical Plus Bar Graph Indicator

A bar graph indicator that can be used in either vertical or
horizontal position with correctly oriented scale simply by reversing
the faceplate. This display is easily configured for any one of five input
types. Type and color of bar graph can be easily set and color
changed when a pre-determined measured value is reached.

Circular chart recorder

A recorder’s performance is determined by the readability of the

information on its printed chart. The DR130 from Yokogawa can record
clearly, in 10 colors, data from all measurement points, at 2-second
intervals. It has a variety of recording functions including analog trend
recording over an effective recording width of 150mm, recording of
digital measured values, recording various messages, zone recording,
and partially compressed and expanded recording, thus enabling data
to be read off speedily.

Digital recorder

PCE-KD5 is a paperless recorder or data logger for the

capturing, monitoring and controlling of process parameters. The
paperless recorder is based on a Linux operating system and has
three slots that can be equipped with several different inputs and
outputs. Depending on your specific needs, it is possible to equip
the PCE-KD5 data logger with up to 48 analog or binary inputs,
24 thermocouple inputs, 12 resistance temperature detector (RTD) inputs, 16 relays / solid
state relays (SSRs) or 8 analog outputs.

SPA Site-Programmable Alarm

The universal SPA Site-Programmable Alarms provide

on/off control, warn of trouble, or provide emergency shutdown.
They accept a direct input from transmitters, temperature sensors,
and a wide array of other monitoring and control instruments.

They provide two or four alarm relay outputs when a

monitored process variable falls outside of user-set high and/or low
limits. Connect the 4-wire (line-powered) SPA to a warning light,
annunciator, bell, or shutdown system, and your process is
protected by a simple, highly reliable, independent warning and/or shutdown strategy.

III. ANALYSIS

The process analytical instrument market segment is distinct from other so-called process
instruments that measure parameters such as power, temperature, pressure, level, and flow.
Rather, the categories cover more sophisticated measurements, usually involving the
quantification or identification of chemical components in a process or waste stream. This will
overview some the applications of these components and how they relate.

Process materials characterization technologies generally involve the real-time

measurements of physical parameters such as particle size, stability, viscosity, etc. In the
process setting, the most common measurement techniques are particle size & distribution
and particle counting. These devices are often used in polymers, chemicals, oil & gas, food &
beverages, mining, wastewater treatment, and paper processing.

IV. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

1. What is the difference in strip chart recorder and circular recorder?

circular rotate at constant velocity the rotation time may span from minutes to days --
while variable(s) are plotted radially. They require a continuous supply of ink pens and chart
paper. While strip-chart variables are plotted with respect to time, as the paper strip advances
uniformly through the plotter. Strip often comes off a roll for space conservation. Require a
continuous supply of ink cartridges and chart paper.

2.  What is a pressure?

Pressure is a measure of the force exerted per unit area on the boundaries of a
substance (or system). It is caused by the collisions of the molecules of the substance with the
boundaries of the system. As molecules hit the walls, they exert forces that try to push the
walls outward.

3. What is temperature?

Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of the atoms or molecules in the
system. The zeroth law of thermodynamics says that no heat is transferred between two objects in
thermal equilibrium; therefore, they are the same temperature.
