A defogger removes condensed water or ice from windshields and rear windshields using an electrical heating element. There are two main types: primary defoggers use the vehicle's engine coolant and ventilation system, while secondary defoggers have heating wires in the glass that are powered by the vehicle's electrical system when the driver engages a defogger switch. When turned on, a relay draws current from the battery to pass through the heating wires in the rear windshield, evaporating any moisture for improved visibility. The system uses low amperage but must be left on for 10 minutes to be fully effective.

A defogger/demister/defroster is an electrical device that
removes the condensed water droplets or ice from the windshield. It is generally of two types A) primary B) secondary. Secondary defogger is provided at the rear windshield. Generally, in some vehicles defogger is also provided at the side windows. A defogger working is simple and easy to understand. A defogger switch is provided at the instrumental panel. The vehicle should be ON for defogging process. A relay situated in the fuse box is used which draws necessary current from the battery and passed it to the rear windshield through wire. At the rear windshield defogger lines or power grids are provided. The current is passed throughout the grids and heats the windshield due to which the water droplets or ice gets evaporated and clear visibility is obtained to the driver. The current drawn is very less about 15 amperes. A defogger works for 10 minute cycle and if the vehicle is running at 48 kmph it will work continuosly. For primary defogging, heat is generally provided by the vehicle's engine coolant via the heater core; fresh air is blown through the heater core and then ducted to and distributed over the interior surface of the windshield by a blower.
