i) Find the rate of change of temperature T at (1,2,2) in the direction towards the point (2,1,3).
ii) Find the direction of greatest increase in T.
19. If f(x,y) = 2x + x2y + y sin(y) and let u = a i + b j be unit vector,
i) Express 𝐷𝑢 f(1,0) in terms of a and b.
ii) Directional Derivative of f(x,y,z) along the vector ( i+ j+ k).
iii) Use (a), to find the values of a and b for which 𝐷𝑢 f(1,0) is maximum.
20. A butterfly is located at (2, -1,3) and desires to fly towards fragrance surface f(x,y,z)= x2+yz2 . Along
which direction should it fly to get fragrance at the earliest.
21. Find the equations of the tangent plane and normal to the given surface at the specified points
i) 2(x-2)2 + (y-1)2+ (z-3)2 =10, at (3,3,5)
ii) y= x2-z2 , at (4,7,3)
22. Use Lagrange’s method of multipliers to find the maximum and minimum values of
i) f(x, y) = x2y and g(x, y)= x2+ 2y2 = 6.
ii) f(x, y) = 2x2 + 3y2 -4x-5, x2 + y2 ≤16
23. A rectangular box open at the top is to have volume of 32 cubic ft. Find the dimensions of the box
requiring least material for its production.
24. Show that the rectangular solid of maximum volume that can be inscribed in a sphere is cube.
25. Find the minimum value of (x2+y2+z2) such that xyz =a3.

26. Find the max. and min. distances of the point (3, 4, 12) from the sphere x2+y2+z2=1
27. Find the point upon the plane ax + by + cz = p at which the function f(x, y, z) = x 2  y 2  z 2

has a minimum value and find this minimum value of f( x, y, z).
