Template for Setting S.M.A.R.T.

Learning Goals
The purpose of this template is to help you design a learning goal in S.M.A.R.T. format, which means that
the goal is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. S.M.A.R.T. goals help students to
remain focussed on small achievements which lead to a larger purpose and can provide motivation during
times when a student feels like giving up.

Instructions: Consider each question below, then type your response.

Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?

I see myself balancing my work life between my home life to the best of my abilities. I will most likely be pursuing a simpler
career for the first bit, like working in a grocery store, and selling commissioned art/animations on the side.

Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?

I see myself having moved on from having to balance work life and home as strictly, and will have most likely taken the
necessary steps to secure myself a career in acting.

What are some things that you feel you MUST accomplish this school year at school or as a
part of your extra-curricular activities to ensure that you are on the right track for fulfilling
your 5 and/or 10 year plans? Also, keep in mind the requirements for your top three career
choices. How can you prepare now for being able to pursue any of those career choices?

I feel that it will be necessary to at least finish my high school year with decent grades, A’s and B’s at the worst.
Continuing to pursue interest in drama related activities could also prove to helpful in pursuing an acting career.

Consider some of your MUST-DOs above to help you formulate an Initial Goal (Write the goal you
have in mind in your own words.):
I will succeed in keeping consistent grades throughout my high school year and in turn succeed in
securing myself a suitable means of employment.
NOW FORMULATE YOUR INITIAL GOAL INTO S.M.A.R.T. FORMAT!!!!

1. Specific (What do you want to accomplish? Who needs to be included? When do you want to do this?
Why is this a goal?)

I will continue to keep my grades at a consistent rate of A’s and B’s throughout the entirety of the final quarter.

2. Measurable (How can you measure progress and know if you’ve successfully met your goal?):

It can be measured based upon how consistently I maintain good grades,as well as the passage of time through the
semester.

3. Achievable (Do you have the skills required to achieve the goal? If not, can you obtain them? What is
the motivation for this goal? Is the amount of effort required on par with what the goal will achieve?):

Yes this goal is indeed achievable, and yes I do hold the skills necessary to achieve this goal. The pay off is at best
questionable in my honest opinion, however others have argued that this is crucial for me to lead a successful life.

4. Relevant (Why am I setting this goal now? Is it aligned with my 5 and/or 10 year plan?)

I am setting this goal now as a means of better crediting myself in future interviews and many other job opportunities.

5. Time-bound (What’s the deadline and is it realistic?):

The deadline is somewhere between the end of May or the first of June. I would say that I am fully capable of meeting this
deadline.

S.M.A.R.T. Learning Goal (Review what you have written, and craft a new goal statement based on what
the answers to the questions above have revealed. Verify that it meets the S.M.A.R.T. criteria):

This quarter of the school year I will succeed in maintaining a consistent grade level of A’s and/or B’s, I will achieve this
either at the end of May or at the beginning of June.
Strategies for Successfully Achieving Your S.M.A.R.T. Learning Goal (Review your Learning Goal
and develop 2-3 strategies that will head you in the right direction for achieving your goal(s) by the
specified deadline.):

1: Continuously checking Infinite Campus for missing assignments.

2: Properly filing my papers and worksheets.
3: Staying on task during class.
