CHAPTER -I

INTRODUCTION

The education challenges faced by healthcare institutions, the use of online

technology (eLearning) to demonstrate competency for practicing nurses in the

acute care environment has only recently been explored. The traditional lecture

format is the use of online technology in continuing nursing education, also known

as E-learning. Technology has revolutionized educator ability to facilitate

professional nursing competence through the use of online education. Some of the

benefits with E-learning and distance learning included it has become more and

more common and acceptable, this type of learning is adaptable and particularly

benefits students who are older or those who need to fit in their learning into busy

lives with both work and family requirements. Other advantages included that it is

a flexible type of learning that can create and foster social, meaningful interactions

with others where knowledge continuously knows.

Online education according to Haraism (1989) is a new domain of learning

that combines distance education with the practice of face-to-face instruction

utilizing computer mediated communication. Ascough (2002) suggested that online

education has the following features: (1) it provides a learning experience different

than in the traditional classroom because learners are different, (2) the

communication is via computer and World Wide Web, (3) participation in

classroom by learners are different, (4) the social dynamic of the learning

environment is changed, and (5) discrimination and prejudice is minimized.

Distance education also allows for a so called borderless learning experience and

mobility for students which adds an important dimension. Distance learning may

facilitate a pedagogical transition from a teacher-centered approach in which

lectures may result in one-way communication to a learner-centered approaches

which involve the students interaction with their teachers and other

students. For example, include the use of video in the course materials, the usage

of computer based conferencing and presentation possibilities that include both

voice-based and usual dimensions, lab-based work that can be seen or performed

online. The usage of blogs and podcasts and so on. Education via distance learning

with digital tools can facilitate variability in learning situations and course content.

In nursing education campus based lectures are a major part of the learning

activities. Barriers to implementation and use of distance learning in nursing

education may be related to teacher limited experience and knowledge in using

digital tools when organizing learning activities. The implementation can be also

affected by teachers fear that distance education may reduce or remove traditional

campus based lectures. The pedagogical transition from traditional to distance

learning is a challenge for nursing education. Experiences from courses that

included a combined pedagogical approach with both distance and campus based

learning showed that students found campus based learning and distance learning,

may give students increased motivation in their learning process.

As a consequence of the COVID-19 outbreak, a number of universities

worldwide were forced to rapidly change the pedagogical approach from

traditional campus based-learning to distance learning using digital tools. Overall,

more knowledge about student experiences when using different pedagogical

approaches, including distance learning is needed to improve didactic strategy in

nursing education. Therefore, this study aimed to describe and evaluate nursing

student experiences of pedagogical transition from traditional campus based

learning to distance learning using digital tools.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The study focused on the Literacy of Nursing Students in Distance Learning:

As Assessment of Pedagogy in Nursing Education.

Specifically, it aims to answer the following questions:

1. Distance education involves learning that takes place when the teacher and

the student are in two different settings?

2. May the traditional lecture format less pedagogical than the E-Learning we

are using right now? Is it unhelpful? How?

3. Are there any significant differences between the effectiveness of different

teaching methods on nursing students in distance learning?

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The general objectives of the study focused on the Literacy of Nursing

Students in Distance Learning: As Assessment of Pedagogy in Nursing Education.

Specifically, the study aims to:

1. Delivers knowledge through higher technologies

2. Determine the factors that may affect the adaptation of knowledge of

the students
3. Describe the problem encountered using E-Learning

4. Describe which is more efficient between traditional learning format

and E-Learning

THEORETICAL AND CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

This study E-Learning saves time and money. With online learning, your

learners can access content anywhere and anytime. E-Learning or Electronic

learning is the delivery of learning and training through digital resources. Although

e-learning is based on formalized learning, it is provided through electronic

devices such as computers, tablets and even cellular phones that are connected to

the internet. This makes it easy for users to learn anytime and anywhere. Whether

you’re an e-learning expert or beginner there’s no denying its popularity has

skyrocketed over the past decades.

HYPOTHESIS OF THE STUDY

H1- there is no difference between students can learn at their own pace and

education

H2- There is no difference between enables learning at anytime and anywhere

H3- there is no difference between helps in developing learners skills and

education

H4- there is no difference between courses are easy to navigate and education

H5- there is no difference between student may have the opportunity to mix what

they learn with practical work and education

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The findings of this study will serve to determine the Literacy of Nursing

Students in Distance Learning: As Assessment of Pedagogy in Nursing Education.

The findings of this study is very useful to following:

Students - This study would help students to know about distance learning. It

would provide them knowledge on how to do E-learning

School- This study would help the school to provide a positive, acceptable and

friendly environment to each student for them to cope up with their personal

problems that could lead to each issues

Teacher- This study would help the school ny reminding students the importance

of student connection and openness to resolve such issues of the Literacy of

students in distance learning that became a trauma to the students

Future researcher- This study will serve as a reference to other researcher who

undertakes similar studies but of different in scope and level

DEFINITION OF TERMS

To have an understanding to the study and will help the readers determine

the tense of the word, the researcher included a contextual meaning of the

following terms:
Distance learning - also known as the serious problem that affects the

community , school and society

Nursing students- refers to the respondents of the study

Education - this refer study that deals mainly with methods of teaching and

learning in schools

COVID-19- this refers to the virus affecting the society
