Textbooks:
Jeppesen A&P Technician Airframe Textbook, Chapter 13, Airframe Ice and Rain Control
Supplemental Text: FAA-H-8083-31 Vol. 2, Aviation Maintenance Technician Handbook:
Airframe

Course Description:

This course covers airframe ice and rain protection theory and practices. Principles of icing, anti-icing,
deicing, and rain removal will be covered.

Course Objectives:

At the end of the section the student should be able to explain theory behind the items stated above, as
well as the operating principles, problems which the technician may encounter, inspection, and
troubleshooting.

Students shall pass the course when the cumulative grades of all assignments (10%), quizzes (30%), and
tests (60%) equals 70% or greater, and pass the final examination with a score of 77% or higher.

Course Assignments:

Academic Integrity:
An aviation mechanic's integrity is paramount in this profession, and the FAA demands it even at this
level. Cheating of any kind will not be tolerated. This includes copying another student's work (lab or
classroom), allowing another student to access your work or view your test answers, or using "cheat
sheets" during testing.
Furthermore, leaving or minimizing the Canvas quiz or test page to access ANY program or application
will not be allowed. Such activity is logged in Canvas, and will be reviewed by the instructor. Unless a
computer or Canvas issue has been immediately brought to the attention of the instructor during the
testing, a grade of "0" will be given for the quiz or test, and the student will be directed to the Dean for
further disciplinary action. See the student handbook for more details.

Class Participation:

Class participation and attendance are critical. It is vitally important that all students have their readings
and assignments completed prior to the start of class, and that they are prepared for classroom
discussions.

Students who find themselves preoccupied in class (sleeping, texting, Facebook, Twitter, non-classroom
activities, homework from other classes, etc.) shall be requested to leave class, and you will lose FAA
time for this departure.

These activities cause a distraction to the student and those around them. Distractions in aircraft
maintenance lead to accidents. It is the responsibility of all mechanics to monitor the condition and
safety of their follow mechanics and the surrounding environment.

Quizzes equal 30% and Homework equals 10% of your total grade:

Quizzes and homework will be given at the discretion of the instructor. These assignments are designed
to give the student an idea of exactly where they stand in regards to their comprehension of the material.
It is of great benefit to the student to complete all assignments.

Homework is given as a tool to ensure the student understands the course lecture material. In general,
two attempts will be given to the student to attain the highest score possible and obtain the greatest
understanding. The Instructor will be responsible for informing the student if the number of attempts is
different.

Quizzes will cover the lecture material and FAA test guide questions. This prepares you for the final
examination for this course. There is no make up for weekly quizzes, unless you have made prior
arrangements with the instructor and they have approved the quiz to be given at a different time.

Final Examination (60% of your total grade):

The section test is a scheduled test. The date is posted on your student canvas classroom portal. Per the
handbook, the test must be taken at that time and passed with a 77%. If the student is not available at
that time, or does not pass with a 77% then ONE (1) retake test will be given and the student must pass
with an 85% or higher. If the test was missed due to absence, then the student shall make the first
attempt on the first Friday after which they return. Retests for students not passing with a 77% should
be scheduled on the earliest Friday which the student is available, and the student must inform the
instructor no later than the preceding Wednesday. The last date which exams can be attempted is the
morning of the quarter final. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure they have retaken the test or
a grade of “Incomplete” or “F” will be given for the quarter.

Attendance & Tardiness Policy:

Attendance:

AMTs cannot accumulate FAA hours until they are officially registered. College policy requires
that all students must be registered by the first day of class. Regular attendance is required to meet FAA
requirements. Missed material must be completed per established FAA policy, and it is the responsibility
of the student to obtain assignments from their instructor and make up all work. Attendance is recorded
through the use of Biometric Time Clocks and roll call at the beginning of each lecture and lab session.
Students not present for roll call will lose time for the entire session. Attendance shall be recorded every
day. (Reference the EVCC AMT Student Program Manual Pg. 7-9.

Tardiness and Classroom requirements:

(Reference the EVCC AMT Student Program Manual Pg. 7-9.

Be aware that being tardy to class will affect your attendance and could eventually lead to failing this
section. You are late to class if you are not present at the time of roll call, up to 15 minutes. Tardiness
beyond 15 minutes is considered an absence, and an FAA makeup assignment is required. Chronic
unexcused tardiness shall result in disciplinary action. Reference the EVCC AMT Student Program
Manual Pg. 8.

Absences from lecture require that you obtain from the instructor an FAA makeup assignment. It is
your responsibility to obtain this material, and complete the assignment prior to the due date given. You
cannot take the section test until all makeup assignments for that section are complete.

If a student is caught sleeping, disrupting the learning environment, or using electronic devices not
related to course material they will receive one warning and can remain in class. If the student receives
a second warning, the instructor will ask you to leave the classroom and clock out until the next
lecture/lab starts.

Late Work Policy:

This class is preparing you for a professional environment. Any assignment that is submitted after the
deadline is considered late and will receive a “0” grade.

If the student has an extenuating circumstance, which causes late work, they are welcome to talk with
the instructor. The instructor has the final word to allow the grade or not.

Course Information and Policies:

Accommodations:

Anyone who feels they may need an accommodation based on the impact of a physical or learning
disability should contact the Center for Disability Services for assistance in verifying the need for
accommodations and developing accommodation strategies. If you have not previously contacted the
Center for Disability Services, I encourage you to do so; they are located in Parks 267 right across from
the bookstore.

Laboratory:

The lab periods are for the student to receive hands on, practical experience on topics covered in the
lecture portion. These skills must be demonstrated satisfactorily to the instructor to pass the course.
These skills may also be evaluated by the Designated Mechanic Examiner during the Practical portion of
the Mechanic's Certification Test. The lab is also critical in reinforcing information delivered during
lecture. Lab time is for completing lab projects. Homework or other outside activities shall be
handled in lab as they are handled in the classroom, up to and including subtracting FAA time or
dismissal from lab. Furthermore, the timely completion of projects is critical. Projects for a given
section should be completed prior to the section test, and all projects must be completed the day prior to
the quarter final. Failure to have all projects completed at this time will result in an “Unsatisfactory”
grade for lab, and will require the entire quarter be retaken.

SAFETY!!!

Safety glasses and EVCC Identification must be worn properly at all times while in
the lab.

Many of the projects in this lab section have the potential to cause serious bodily injury or death.
Students must follow instructions given by ALL instructors and Lab Techs. If in doubt, ask again.
Failure to follow safety precautions or instructions will be cause for the student to be dismissed from lab
for the remainder of the day. Before the student is allowed to operate any equipment, a demonstration
from the instructor must be performed.
