Cambodian Pinpeat

Cambodia’s rich cultural heritage went through a crisis during the Khmer Rouge regime. An effort to recreate culture
from scratch proved damaging for many aspects of Khmer culture. Many artworks were destroyed, including musical
instruments. Musicians were killed. All art forms have suffered. It was during 1979, after the Pol Pot regime was toppled,
the efforts to recover what remains of Khmer culture began.
PINPEAT- Is the most prominent ensemble music in Cambodia. Its Existence can be traced back to the ancient times as
numerous sculptures have been found in the temples of Angkor Wat. The name was derived from two instruments: Pin,
a strummed string instrument, and Peat, a half moon shaped instrument with eight or nine gongs. It is interesting to
note that these two instruments while originally part of the ensemble as found in sculptures and as recognized by
people from Siem Reap, are no longer used in the Pinpeat. It is also possible that the Pinpeat is the ancestor of the Thai
Piphat and the Burmese Kyi-Waing.

The Pinpeat orchestra is usually used in the Robam Boran Khmer, Lakbon Khol, Nang Sbek, royal rituals, and monastic
function.

Parts Of Pinpeat

The Pinpeat instruments can be categorized in four:

1. Xylophones (Roneat Ek and Roneat Thung) and Metallophone ( Roneat Dek)

2. Gong-Chime sets on rattan frames (khong-Vong Toch and Khong-Vong Thom)
3. Woodwinds: Oboes (Sralay Toch and Sralay Thom) and Bamboo Flute (Khloy)
4. Percussion: Horizontal drum on stand ( Skor Samhor), Bass Drums (Skor Thom) and Little Copper Chimes (Ching)

Types Of Pinpeat

Pinpeat can be classified according to size:

1. Vong Pleng Pinpeat Toch- Includes one Roneat Ek, one Khong-Vong Thom, either the Slaray Toch or Sralay
Thom, Skor Samphor and Skor Thom.
2. Vong Pleng Pinpeat Thom- Includes all instruments (refers to the parts of Pinpeat).
