LO: Describe how you can find the shape

of a magnetic field.

magnetic field lines 磁场线

REPEL
A compass points
north because its
needle is a small
magnet. It rotates
and lines up with
the Earth’s
magnetic field.
The Earth’s magnetic field
The Earth behaves as if there is a
huge bar magnet inside it. The
magnetic field pattern is like that of
a bar magnet.

Geographic North Pole地理北极

The magnetic North Pole is in Canada, about 1200 km away from

the geographic North Pole.

LO: Describe how to make an

electromagnet.
The field around a wire

Whenever current
travels through a
wire,
a magnetic field is
produced.
当电流穿过电线,
会形成磁场。
电流方向

磁场方向

The magnetic field lines around the wire are circles. The magnetic
field gets weaker as you get further away from the wire.
Making an
electromagnet
1. You can make
a circular loop of
wire and pass a
current through it.
The magnetic
field lines at the
centre are
straight.
2.You can a coil a wire into lots of loops and make a
coiled cylinder. The field is much stronger than for a
single loop on its own. A coil of wire is called a
solenoid电磁线圈.
加上磁芯 Add a core!
The core becomes
magnetised by the magnetic
field of the coil. This makes
the electromagnet much
stronger. Most cores are
made of iron.
电磁铁的强度取决于:
The strength of an electromagnet depends on:

● the number of turns, or loops, on the coil – more

turns will make a stronger electromagnet
● the current flowing in the wire – more current
will make a stronger electromagnet
● the type of core – using a magnetic material in
the core will make a stronger electromagnet.
