1
What I Need to Know

In this module, you are expected to read, write and give the place value and value of
a decimal and round off decimal numbers.

What’s New

Now, let us study on the place value and value of a decimal number through
ten thousandths.

Let us use a place value chart to identify the place value a digit of a given
decimal through ten thousandths.

Ones Decimal Tenths Hundredths Thousandths Ten

Point 1 1 1 thousandths
10 100 1000 1
10 000
0 ● 5 4 3 2
0 ● 2 5 4 3
0 ● 2 4 5 3
0 ● 2 4 3 5

Observe number 5. It occupies a different place.

5 in 0.5432 means 5 x or or 0.5, it’s in the tenths place and its value is five
tenths.

5 in 0.2543 means 5 x or or 0.05, it is in the hundredths place and the value

is five hundredths.

5 in 0.2453 means 5 x or or 0.005, it is in the thousandths place and its

value is five thousandths.

5 in 0.2435 means 5 x or or 0.0005, it’s in the ten thousandths place and

its value five thousandths

2
What Is It

The value of the tenths is one-tenth the value of the ones place. The place to the left
is ten times the place to its right. The decimal point dictates where the whole number
part ends and where the decimal part begins.

To further understand the concept, let us study more examples. Write the place
value and value of the underlined digit. Number 1 is done for you.

What I Need to Know

This lesson will help you on how to read and write decimal
numbers through ten thousandths.

6
What’s New

Let’s use the place value chart to help you read the number.

Ones ● Tenths Hundredths Thousandths

4 ● 4 0

4.40 is a decimal number in standard form. It is read as “4 and forty hundredths”.

 Is 4.40 the same or equal to 4.4? Why? Let’s find it on the next exercises.

Read each number in the chart below.

Hundreds Tens Ones ● Tenths Hundredths Thousandths Ten

Thousandths
1 ● 9 8 7 6
5 ● 1 4 0
1 4 ● 2 0
1 2 1 ● 7

What Is It

Like whole numbers, we read decimals from left to right. The digits to the left
of the decimal point are read as a whole number, and the decimal point is read as
“and”. The digits to the right of the point are also read as a whole number, after which
we say the name of the place value of the digit.

7
Let’s study this example.

Hundreds Tens Ones ● Tenths Hundredths Thousandths Ten

Thousandths
9 ● 9 8 7 6
2 2 1 ● 7
The numbers in the chart are read as follows:

1.9876 – Nine and nine thousand eight hundred seventy-six ten thousandths

221.7 - Two hundred twenty-one and seven tenths

Observe the following decimal numbers on how they are written in standard form. Let’s
use again the chart below.

1) Thirty and one ten thousandths

2) Sixty-seven and twenty-four thousandths
3) Seventy and two hundredths
4) Twenty-three and five tenths

Hundreds Tens Ones ● Tenths Hundredths Thousandths Ten Thousandths

3 0 ● 0 0 0 1

If you notice, numbers are written from left to write starting from the whole numbers, in
thirty and one ten thousandths, you write one in the ten thousandths place, since it is ten
thousandths. And you write zero in the preceding places.

Now, it’s your turn. Write item 2 to 4 in standard form.

Hundreds Tens Ones ● Tenths Hundredths Thousandths Ten

What I Need to Know

At the end of this lesson, you are expected to round decimal numbers to
the nearest hundredths and thousandths.

11
What’s New

Activity 1: Round off the following decimals to the nearest hundredths.

1) 0.2345

2) 8.4561

What Is It

To round a decimal number, determine first the rounding place. Then look at the
digit to the right of the rounding place. The digit in the rounding place is the one that will
either be rounded up or rounded down depending on the digit to its right. If it is 5 or
greater, add 1 to the rounding place. If it is less than 5, retain the digit in the rounding place.
Do not forget to drop all the digits after the rounding place.

12
What’s More

Now that you have learned the principles in rounding decimal numbers. Round each
decimal to the indicated place value below.

What I Have Learned

How do you round decimal numbers? Write your answer inside the box.

What I Can Do

1. Earth travels around the sun at a speed of about 29.783 km. per second.
Round this number to the nearest tenths.

2. Mario has toy weights 54.7827. Round it to the nearest thousandths.

3. Pedro walks 1.9872 km everyday. How long does he walk if it will be rounded to
