Lesson 1.1_Assessment

Name: Merry Clandestine T. Co Class Schedule: TTh (4:00 – 6:30)

Instruction: Determine what is required. Answers with solutions must be handwritten in a

short bondpaper and save as PDF file. Submit it as an attachment in
your Lesson 1.1_Assessment submission in moodle. Thanks.

1. In your own words, discuss the concept of a function (in mathematics). Do it briefly
but concisely. [ 5pts]

A technical definition of a function is a relation from a set of inputs to a set of possible outputs
where each input is related to exactly one output. One can consider the function name
(f,g,h,...f,g,h,...) , the variable and input (x,y,...x,y,...) , the thing to output
(x7,sin(y),...x7,sin(y),...) , and the relationship between the input and the output. A function
generally provides a relation between each element of a set and only one element of another set
.

2. Determine whether the following is a function or not. [ 6 points]

If your answer is “not function”, give the reason for such answer.
a. {(1,2), (2,3), (-2,3), (3,5)}
b. {(10, 100), (-5, 25), (3,9), (-5,25)}
c. 𝑦 = √16 − 𝑥 2
d. 𝑥 + 𝑦 2 = 4

3. Line segments in an xy-plane form “letters” as depicted.

a. If the y-axis is parallel to the letter I, which of the letters represent the graph of
𝑦 = 𝑓(𝑥) for some function 𝑓?
b. If the y-axis is perpendicular to the letter I, which of the letters represent the graph of
𝑦 = 𝑓(𝑥) for some function 𝑓?

b. The range of 𝑓 is
c. 𝑓 (3)=
d. 𝑓 (21) =
e. The solutions to 𝑓(𝑥) = − are x= _______ and x=

6. Let l, w, and A denote the length, width, and Area of a rectangle, respectively, and
suppose that the width of the rectangle is half the length.
a. If l is expressed as a function of w, then l= .
b. If A is expressed as a function of l, then A=
c. If w is expressed as a function of A, then w=
