1. BACKGROUND OF HOSTING COMPANY/ALEMNEW MAMO G.

1.1 Introduction

Even though we are interested in concepts, logic reasoning and application of civil engineering
for the betterment of mankind through safe and economical engineering achievement, people
who were builders many years ago necessary to gain an appreciation for our heritage as
engineers. Now a day’s civil engineering has vital roles throughout the world to fulfill the
demand of society related with infrastructures buildings to solve the problems based on safe and
economical way. The government of Ethiopia proclaimed the policy of development and
transformation regarding to constructing infrastructures, hydro, buildings… etc. to achieve these
goals the government trained many civil engineering students.

1.2 Back ground of hosting company

AlemnewMamo G.C is a grade five Building contractors or company which is established in

2001 E.C owned and managed by AlemnewMamo. AlemnewMamo G.C has played a great role
in region Amhara to bring a change in construction sector by involving in various projects. The
company grows based on the principle of quality and speed. The company gives priority to
satisfy the desires of its clients accordingly the organizationgained rich experience in the area of
construction and enhanced its human and material resources which enable it to change its level.
The organization has a lot of permanent staff’s members and temporary workers in addition to
the large number of daily laborers working indifferent projects of the construction.
AlemnewMamo G.C is playing significant role in the economy of the nation in line with its role
at curtailing the social economic problems of unemployment phenomena of our country.

The company continues to move forward and become the leading Engineering and Construction
firm in region eventually in Ethiopia, while delivering projects that consistently meet
international standards. Briefly the vision is:

1.5.1 Over all organization structure

 Project manager:- manages the whole site work execution
- approves payment to sub contract workers
- approves material request
- analyses the work processes
- executes sub-contracting agreements
- issues the grant of higher power of working class
- reviews and checks the reports made by the site/office engineer etc.

 Site/ office engineer: - is the second power holder in the contractor side.
- Prepares daily laborers output report.
- Organizes the monthly reports to be sent to HO.
- Schedules weekly or monthly work implementation.
- Checks and reviews any sub contract payments.
- Quantifies any materials on request etc.

 Site supervisor:- corrects and approves any design problems and changes
- make decisions in work execution processes
- reports the whole activities implemented in a month
- Generally, connects the contractor with the consultant group etc.

 Project administrator: - is a non- technology person who administers the site.

- settles administer problems & disputes raised in the site
- hires skilled and unskilled man power
- passes approval grant of workers to the P. M
- Organizes and arranges salary payments etc.

 General Forman - assigns and controls the gang leaders and carpenter Forman
- checks the whole work process
- quantifies some materials and makes request
- Reports any challenges of work procedures and their execution etc.
 Store keeper – has his own assistant store keeper
- controls, manages and registers all materials which are going out /in to
the store
- Balances the materials consumed with the unconsumed one etc.

 Time keeper – controls the time the workers start, break and end
- registers ordinary time amount and overtime works
- reports a summary of working times to P. administrator for salary

 Data collector – collects any data of work, daily

- reports the daily activities to the site/ office engineer
- Prepares monthly summary report etc.

 Gang leaders – controls a group of daily laborers in a specific activity

- assigns the laborers to activities when essential
- Reports any difficulties to G. Forman etc.
 Skilled man power – those are carpenters, masons, mixer operators…etc.
 Daily laborers – are unskilled man workers who work as assigned on a specific activity.
 Guards – keep the site safe and follow the activity of the site if there is odd reaction.
 Drivers – includes small to large truck drivers. Transports the materials purchased and also
machineries in / out of project.
