OFQUAL TEFL LEVEL 5

LEVEL 6 ASSIGNMENT 1/1.1,1.2,
English skills are all related to each other. In order to english language
learners to reach the level of proficiency, learners and teachers should pay
equal attention to all english language skills.

Listening is the process of hearing and understanding what the others are
saying. A person who understands the english language can understand
the meaning of the word, recognize the sound, and understand the
grammatical instruction.

“Students need to be exposed to the english language if they want to learn

it,and one of the best ways of doing this is through listening” JEREMY
HARMER 2003.
Other methodologists have the same opinion as Harmer, which is that wide exposure to
coherent language through reading or listening would enhance students' general capability.
Today almost everyone agrees that providing the students with a significant amount of oral
comprehension is considered one of the best methods of teaching speaking.
This method of providing the students with a lot of comprehensible input is called extensive
listening.

Extensive listening
“All types of listening activities that allow learners to receive a lot of comprehensible and
enjoyable listening input “ .(Renandya& Farrell,2010,p.5.
Reading specialists declare the significance of extensive reading as it is a brilliant technique to
help improve the students’ ability to word recognition skills, vocabulary ,fluency and proficiency,it
is an enjoyable idea that students can choose something interesting to read which should match
their level and at the same time it is very beneficial for them.
Extensive listening is the same process of extensive reading ,the teacher persuades the
students to choose something they like to listen to and this usually happens anywhere outside
the classroom this will have a good impact on the student.
It requires listening for a long period of time and focusing on overall understanding.it helps the
students to understand the language spoken in the real world.
There are plenty of materials students can use them to enhance their listening skills,
Audio book_watching movies _listening to the radio is one of the best way for anyone to
improve listening ability.

Example of extensive listening:

Teachers usually use multiple choice questions ,the teacher gives the students the questions to
read before start the listening activity then they start listening and guessing the right answers

Elementary level: students will hear two friends talking with each
other about a new language class that Susan has started.
As you listen to the audio match the person on the left with the information on the right:

1_Miko is the girl we are listening to .

2_Hania is not mentioned at all .

3_Jermey plays tennis .

4_Dora is the boy we are listening to .

INTENSIVE LISTENING:::
What is happening in the classroom is called intensive listening. This type of listening is a
slow ,careful listening of short and difficult audio clips.in intensive reading the concentration will
be on form rather than overall meaning.the goal of intensive reading is to pay attention to
pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary.extreme focus on these parts of the audio will help the
student to build a basis for english language acquisition.students listen to short audios and
videos of news, short reported stories and interviews.

Example of intensive reading

The student will listen to short audio which is an interview with an actress then they answer the
following question
1.what has Emma said about the last six month of her life?
She’s been incredibly busy.
She feels she doesn't belong in this showbiz world.
She’s had too much to learn.
2.How did she find working with a famous actor in her last film?
She felt relaxed around him.
She didn’t find him very professional.
She was determined not to let it affect her work.
3.Why is Emma happy that she will be in New York next month?
She doesn't like working in Chicago.
Family commitments make things difficult for her.
Her husband and her daughter don't like living in Chicago.

Skimming and scanning

Are two receptive skills that are used in extensive reading.skimming is to read quickly in order to
have a general idea about a passage, the students don't read the whole text ,they skip some
paragraphs, usually read the first and last paragraphs and try to extract the general idea of the
context.this skill is used to read newspapers, emails and messages.

Scanning::
Refers to searching for a specific information, particular name, telephone
number,date,programme.
Is when you run your eyes quickly over the text to locate specific details.

Skim the following job advertisement;

NEEDED:: FULL TIME SECRETARY POSITION AVAILABLE.APPLICANT SHOULD HAVE AT
LEAST TWO YEARS OF EXPERIENCE AND BE ABLE TO TYPE SIXTY WORDS A
MINUTE.NO COMPUTER SKILLS REQUIRED .APPLY IN PERSON AT UNITED BUSINESS
LTD.,17 BROWNING STREET.
Students will read the advertisement quilly and have a general idea about the requirements of
the job.

In the scanning exercise the teacher asks the students to read the
title first so they have a good idea about what they are going to
read then read every question and look for the answers in the
passages.

READ THE FOLLOWING PASSAGE THEN ANSWER THE QUESTION::

A passage about snow white and then giving them these question:
1.Who did Snow white live with?
2.What was Snow white’s stepmother like?
3.Why did her stepmother decide to kill her?
4.what did Snow white do when she entered the dwarves’ cottage?
And too many activities could be given to different student's levels which will help them to
improve their reading skills.
To summarize this essay ,I would say that there are two types of listening which are extensive
and intensive and two types of reading ,skimming and scanning .Both reading and listening are
very important skills to enhance the english learners' proficiency and fluency.
