Multiple regression

1. In the study of a random sample of 43 students, the following results were

obtained in respect to three characteristics:
X1 : intelligence quotient
X2 : hours of study per week.
X3 : honour points.

X1 = 100.7 X2 = 24.1 X3 = 18.4

σ12 = 248.06 σ22 = 37.82 σ32 = 121.25

r12 = - 0.34 r13= 0.62 r23 = 0.31

i. Obtain the least square regression plane of X3 on X1 and X2.

ii. Calculate the honour points of a student whose I.Q. is 110 and who studies
for 20 hours per week.
iii. Calculate the partial correlation coefficient r31.2
iv. Calculate the multiple correlation coefficient R3.12

2. A researcher wanted to examine whether expenditure on food depends upon the

income and size of family.He collected data regarding annual expenditure on
food (X3) , annual income ( X1) and family size( X2) of 10 families selected at
random.The results are given below :

n = 10 , ΣX1 = 133 , ΣX2 = 38 , ΣX3 = 271 , ΣX1X3 = 3701 , ΣX2X3 = 1073 ,

ΣX1X2 = 513, ΣX12 = 1835 , ΣX22 = 164 , ΣX32 = 7549.

( X1 : in ‘000Rs. , X3 : ‘00Rs. )

i. Find the least square regression plane of X3 on X1 and X2.

ii. Calculate the probable annual expenditure of a family with annual income of
Rs.20,000 and having 6 members.
iii. Calcualte R3.12 , r32.1.
3. The sale of a product in lakhs of rupees(X3) is expected to be influenced by two
variables namely the advertising expenditure X1( in ‘000 Rs.) and the number of
sales persons X2 in a region. Sample data on 8 regions of a state has the following
results.

Area X1 X2 X3
1 30 11 110
2 40 10 80
3 20 7 70
4 50 15 120
5 60 19 150
6 40 12 90
7 20 8 70
8 60 14 120

i. Fit the least square regression plane of X3 on X1 and X2.

ii. Calculate the partial correlation coefficient r31.2
iii. Calculate the multiple correlation coefficient R3.12
