Example Candidate Responses – Paper 1

Introduction
The main aim of this booklet is to exemplify standards for those teaching Cambridge IGCSE Hindi as a Second
Language 0549, and to show how different levels of candidates’ performance (high, middle and low) relate to the
subject’s curriculum and assessment objectives.
In this booklet candidate responses have been chosen from June 2019 scripts to exemplify a range of answers.
For each question, the response is annotated with a clear explanation of where and why marks were awarded or
omitted. This is followed by examiner comments on how the answer could have been improved. In this way, it is
possible for you to understand what candidates have done to gain their marks and what they could do to improve their
answers. There is also a list of common mistakes candidates made in their answers for each question.
This document provides illustrative examples of candidate work with examiner commentary. These help teachers
to assess the standard required to achieve marks beyond the guidance of the mark scheme. Therefore, in some
circumstances, such as where exact answers are required, there will not be much comment.
The questions and mark schemes and pre-release material used here are available to download from the School
Support Hub. These files are:

The candidate was not awarded full marks here due to a lack of sufficient focus. The candidate should have
underlined the key words given in the question. The key words would have helped them to find the correct answer
in this exercise. In this case, the information selected by the candidate reflected a certain degree of uncertainty. For
example, the response to Question 5 clearly showed that the key word was unintelligible to the candidate. Therefore,
they were unable to select the correct information.

How the candidate could have improved their answer

This candidate was awarded 7 out of 8 marks for this question. However, the final mark was not awarded because the
candidate failed to do a close reading of the question and underline the key words in the question. After attempting
a close reading of the question, candidates should have focused closely on the information within the question and
identified the relevant part in relation to the question. They should then have carefully selected the relevant answers
and have written them. There was no need to write answers in full sentences in Exercise 1, however. Please read the
instructions given in the syllabus.

Common mistakes candidates made in this question

The question was about why people were shifted to new houses built in Seelampur. The correct answer: ‘They were

presented answers with some correct elements, they failed to offer sufficient detail within their response and missed

How the candidate could have improved their answer

The candidate completed this exercise well. The candidate should have found the matching words given in the text to
answer the question. The key to securing full marks was to manage time efficiently.

Common mistakes candidates made in this question

• The candidate successfully secured full marks for Exercise 2. However, the candidate initially marked one box
before they changed their answer by crossing out their mark and ticking another different box. Although the
candidate arrived at the right answer in the end, crossing out and redoing answers made them difficult to read and
created unnecessary confusion. Therefore, it was important that before ticking the box each candidate should have
thought about which box they wanted to tick. A candidate should have been absolutely sure that the answer they
selected was the answer they wanted the examiner to see.
• This exercise expected the candidate to find the correct matching information asked in the question. Therefore,
it was important to find the matching information without spending too much time on reading the text again and
again. As soon as the candidate selected the matching word or phrase in the text, then cross checked with the
wording of the question they should have moved on swiftly.

The candidate managed to read and identify the appropriate information from the text. Each response sharply
addressed these questions. Question 16 required candidates to give two reasons for the popularity of the orchid. The
candidate mentioned two reasons clearly. However, both reasons pertained to the beauty of the orchid and so the
candidate failed to secure the final mark. Here, the candidate should have given one more reason for the orchid’s
popularity, which was unrelated to the beauty of the orchid to be awarded both marks.

How the candidate could have improved their answer

Here the candidate secured 5 of the 9 marks available. The candidate did not identify the appropriate content from the
text. The candidate should have paid more attention to the wording of the questions. The candidate lacked sufficient
focus on the wording of the questions. They also failed to identify the key elements of the question which would have
informed a better answer. Candidates should have been sure that the information they had selected was relevant; it
was only then that the candidate should have formulated the sentence.

Common mistakes candidates made in this question

This candidate gave the wrong answer to Question 16 and Question 17. This was because they gave the correct
answer for Question 17 to Question 16, and the correct answer for Question 16 to Question 17. This was a result of
not understanding what the question required: many candidates struggled with this. Candidates often also failed to
write in complete sentences which resulted in poor answers. Candidates should always have taken note of how many
marks were available for each question. This could have been a useful reference point for how much detail should
have been given when writing an answer. If the question was for two marks then it did not mean that the candidate
could divide one point into two separate statements. Therefore, it was important to write two separate points in terms
of content.

How the candidate could have improved their answer

The candidate was unable to write all four points asked in the question. The candidate’s expression was simple and
limited. There was no attempt to use their own words whilst describing the selected points. The relevant points lacked
organisation and did not demonstrate the ability to express content clearly.

How the candidate could have improved their answer

• It was important to pay attention to the rubric for writing the summary. Sometimes the candidate was not only
unable to identify the relevant points from the text, but also wrote more than the word limit. Exceeding the word
limit was not allowed. In this example, you could see that the candidate wrote a couple of relevant points but these

not receive any marks for this content.
• Also, remember that in this exercise, more marks were allocated for language than for content. Therefore, it was
imperative to have written points precisely. Good use of vocabulary could have helped candidates to achieve high
marks in this exercise.

Common mistakes candidates made in this question

Candidates did not select points according to the issues highlighted in the rubric. As a result, they ended up rewriting
points they wrote as part of the note-making exercise. This not only affected their marks for the content but also had a
bearing on the language. Candidates should also have kept to the word limit.

1 This exercise asks candidates

1
to include three specific points
in their e-mail: (1) highlighting
their memories of being with
their friend (2) writing how they
felt when they met this friend on
social media and (3) expressing
their wish to meet them in person
2 now. This candidate is able to
elaborate these three points with
an effective style of expression.
The choice of words and phrases
in Hindi makes reading the piece
enjoyable.

2 The candidate is able to

use appropriate metaphors to
introduce the topic powerfully. An
appropriate register is selected
and there is a consistent style of
writing demonstrated throughout
the response.

3 This candidate follows the

rubric and includes all three points
in his letter. Also, the level of
Hindi is excellent. There is a good
3
command of words and natural-
sounding phrases are used.
This makes reading the answer
enjoyable.

How the candidate could have improved their answer
The candidate secured full marks and there was little that could have been commented on to improve the answer.
The candidate introduced the topic with good use of metaphors and idioms. The style of language was effective and
the candidate showed a good command of vocabulary. All three points were elaborated with a proper introduction and
end. The paragraphs were linked appropriately. A wide range of vocabulary was used throughout the response.

How the candidate could have improved their answer

The candidate lost 3 marks due to spelling errors. When spelling errors hampered or created confusion of the meaning
of the phrase, this would have had an effect on the marks the candidate received. There was a lack of consistency in
the style and register of the writing. The candidate did not demonstrate the ability to express an appropriate command
of the language. Limited vocabulary and a lack of organisation of the material made reading difficult.

How the candidate could have improved their answer

The candidate lost marks because they failed to cover the bullet points given in the question. The response was
also beyond the word limit. The candidate’s response did not clearly elaborate the issues mentioned in the question.
The candidate also failed to secure full marks due to use of an inappropriate register and some ineffective language.
Finally, each paragraph should have dealt with one idea, using a wide range of vocabulary; here, the candidate failed
to do this well.

Common mistakes candidates made in this question

Sometimes candidates overlooked the points which they had to include in their response and covered only two points
out of the three. It was important to avoid spelling errors because excessive errors could mean that marks were lost.
Often a candidate’s lack of consistency of register and style in their writing response also hampered their answer. A
limited vocabulary and lack of use of effective phrases also brought the level of writing down.

How the candidate could have improved their answer

This was a good answer but there was room for improvement, as all 16 marks were not secured. The candidate was
supposed to address the given topic in relation to the two comments reflecting opposing views mentioned in the rubric.
These two opposing viewpoints could have functioned as guidelines for the candidate’s answers. The candidate was
able to introduce the topic with an excellent opening paragraph by using an idiom which underlined the significance of
the issue of money. The candidate included good examples to elaborate both sides of the arguments with an excellent
sense of purpose and with an appropriate register. However, despite building the arguments with a wide range of
vocabulary, the candidate was unable to conclude the response in an appropriate manner. Therefore, writing in this
task should have included an introduction, a main section, elaborating the argument, and a good conclusion.

How the candidate could have improved their answer
The candidate was awarded half the marks available because, although the candidate managed to give mostly
relevant points, the style of writing lacked a sense of direction. Moreover, the register used was inappropriate.
The ideas were developed to a satisfactory level but the expressions used were simple. There was also a limited
vocabulary used that made reading the piece difficult. Several spelling mistakes obscured the meaning. Grammatical
errors occured when the candidate attempted more ambitious language.

How the candidate could have improved their answer
The candidate was able to express the arguments in a limited and narrow sense. The writing style and sense of
purpose was limited. The actual content was repetitive and the absence of a wide range of vocabulary made it
restrictive. Several grammatical mistakes limited the clarity of meaning.

Common mistakes candidates made in this question

Often candidates made general comments with regard to the topic and did not attempt to highlight the two opposite
viewpoints given in the rubric. The writing tended to be general and lacked good examples related to the topic.
Therefore, the development of ideas were either absent or expressed inadequately. A wide range of vocabulary,
idioms and phrases could have been used in a meaningful way to convey a balanced position with regard to the two
opposite comments. Well-constructed paragraphs and linked paragraphs could have given a strong beginning and
end to a response.
