Guide in Using PIVOT Learner’s Material

For the Parents/Guardian

This module aims to assist you, dear parents, guardians, or siblings of the
learners, to understand how materials and activities are used in the new
normal. It is designed to provide the information, activities, and new learning
that learners need to work on.

Activities presented in this module are based on the Most Essential Learning
Competencies (MELCs) in English as prescribed by the Department of
Education.

Further, this learning resource hopes to engage the learners in guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this
also aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking
into consideration their needs and circumstances.

You are expected to assist the child in the tasks and ensure learner’s mastery
of the subject matter. Be reminded that learners have to answer all the
activities in their own notebook.

For the Learners

The module is designed to suit your needs and interests using the IDEA
instructional process. This will help you attain the prescribed grade level
knowledge, skills, attitude, and values at your own pace outside the normal
classroom setting.

The module is composed of different types of activities that are arranged

according to graduated levels of difficulty—from simple to complex. You are
expected to answer all activities on separate sheets of paper and submit
the outputs to your respective teachers on the time and date agreed upon.

Prepare Installer
1-2 Lesson

I
From the previous Lesson, you have learned different types of software
and file extensions. In this lesson you will learn how to Install and Configure
your Computer System. But first, you must learn how and what to prepare
in Installing Operating System to your computer. We are going to follow the
process of installing an operating system to your computer. In this case we
will be using Microsoft Windows 7 as our Operating System.

After going through this module, as a learner you are expected to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of concepts and principles in
installing configuring computer systems;
2. Learn the step-by-step procedure in preparation for Operating
System Installation; and
3. Create portable bootable devices in accordance with software
manufacturer instruction (TLE_IACSS9-12ICCS-If-j-29).

Learning Task 1 Before we begin our lesson, let us first check what you
already know about this topic. Read the items very carefully. Choose the best
answer from the given choices. Write your answer in a separate clean sheet of
paper.

D
Most software programs require that you first install them on your
computer before using them. For example, if you buy Microsoft Office, you
need to install it on your computer before you can run any of the included
programs such as Word or Excel. You can install software from a CD or DVD,
an external hard drive, or from a networked computer. You can also install a
program or software update from a file downloaded from the Internet.
Installing a software program writes the necessary data for running the
program on your hard drive. Often the installer program will decompress the
data included with the installer immediately before writing the information to
your hard drive. Software updates, which are typically downloaded from the
Internet, work the same way. When you run the update, the installer file
decompresses the data and then updates the correct program or operating
system.
These are all possible if you are already have Operating Systems
installed in your computer. Installing Operating System is much way more
different from installing application software such as Microsoft Office, Adobe
Photoshop or even your favorite computer game.

2
INSTALLATION VS INSTALLER
Installation (or setup) of a computer program
(including device drivers and plugins), is the act of making
the program ready for execution. Because the process
varies for each program and each computer, programs
(including operating systems) often come with an installer,
a specialized program responsible for doing whatever is
needed for their installation. Installation on the other hand
maybe part of a larger software deployment process.

Installer (also called as installation program) is a computer program

that install files such as application, drivers, or other software, onto a
computer. Some installers are specifically made to install the files they
contain; other installers are general-purpose and work by reading the
contents of the software package to be installed.

Common Windows Installer File Extension:

1. Executable = .exe
2. Microsoft Windows Installation = .msi
3. Compressed Zip File = .zip
4. ISO image = .iso

DRIVERS
Drivers or device drivers are small software programs that help the
operating system use or “drive” the device. It is a program that allows a
particular hardware device to work and communicate with the computer
system. Whenever a device doesn’t work properly, check if the proper driver
has been installed.

Computer Device/Peripherals that need drivers:

• Sound
• Video (VGA)
• Network (LAN, WIFI)
• Bluetooth
• USB ports
• Mouse/Keyboard

Four ways to Install device drivers

Through…
1) Manufacturer’s CD/DVD Installer
2) Driver Pack Solution
3) Device Manager (Driver Update)
4) Manually downloaded online

3
BOOTABLE MEDIA
Bootable media is usually a startup disc/flash drive or boot disc, that
contains bootable files required for the computer to run an operating system.
It can be any device or drive that has the required boot files that allows the
computer to start. For example, a floppy disk drive, CD-ROM drive, DVD drive,
and USB jump drive are all considered bootable media or devices. However,
unless the necessary boot files are stored on the drive, diskette, or disc the
computer will not be able to boot from that device.

Bootable Media can be:

1) DVD -A type of disc capable to store files up to 4.7GB
DVD = Digital Versatile Disc
DVD-R = Digital Versatile Disc-Recordable
DVD-RW = Digital Versatile Disc-Rewritable
2) USB Flash Drive
USB=Universal Serial Bus

ISO IMAGE
An ISO image or .ISO file is a computer file that contains the
complete contents of a CD, DVD, or other disc or disk. ISO
images are an exact backup of these media, which makes the
sharing or distribution of them over the Internet easier.

INSTALLATION
A) Installation from Optical Devices
With streaming services increasingly popular delivery mechanisms for
video and music and so many software packages now downloadable or
installable by USB key, an optical drive is no longer the computing necessity
it once was. But it is still nice to have one, whether it is for ripping music files
or taking full advantage of a Netflix subscription. And if you are building a
computer from scratch, optical drives are still practically necessities, with
driver software and other key utilities still shipping first and foremost on
discs.

4
B) Installation from Portable Devices
A portable device is any device that can easily be carried. It is a small
form factor of a computing device that is designed to be held and used in the
hands. Portable devices are becoming an increasingly important part of
personal computing as the capabilities of devices like laptops, tablets and
smartphones continue to improve.

C) Installation via Network

Network boot Windows involves two machines: boot server and boot
client. The boot client is a computer you are trying to boot up over network,
while the boot server is the machine that serves over the network the files
which the client needs. Network boot program allows to remote boot a
computer over an IP network without access to a hard disk. It is therefore
ideally suited for diskless or thin clients.

17
D
The Basic Input/Output System usually referred to as BIOS, is
software stored on a small memory chip on the motherboard.

It is a program or code that helps the processor to interact and control the
other components in the computer like monitor, printer, scanner, card reader,
speakers, joystick, microphone, camera, disc drives, TV/video/sound card,
network cards, USB ports, and hard drives. It also does the boot process
before the operating system do its work.

What is the BIOS used

for?
BIOS instruct the
computer on how to
perform a number of
basic functions such as
booting and keyboard
control. BIOS is also
used to identify and
configure the hardware
in a computer such as
the hard drive, optical
drive, CPU, memory,
etc.

18
How to Access BIOS
The BIOS is accessed
and configured
through the BIOS
Setup Utility. The BIOS
Setup Utility is, for all
practical purposes, the
BIOS itself. All
available options in
BIOS are configurable
through the BIOS
Setup Utility.

Unlike an operating
system like Windows,
which is often downloaded or obtained on a disc and needs to be installed by
the user or manufacturer, BIOS comes installed from the moment the
machine is manufactured.

The BIOS Setup Utility is accessed in various ways depending on your

computer or motherboard make and model.

BIOS access and configuration on PC systems is

independent of any operating system because the BIOS
is part of the motherboard hardware. It doesn't matter if
a computer is running Windows 7, Windows Vista,
Windows XP, Linux, UNIX, or no operating system at all
- BIOS functions outside of the operating system
environment and is no way dependent upon it.

How to Enter BIOS

The steps below can be used to access the BIOS setup utility on your PC, no
matter what operating system is installed. This is because the BIOS is part of
your motherboard hardware and has nothing at all to do with what's on your
hard drive.

Getting into BIOS isn't at all hard, but it can be tricky on some systems.
Check out our extensive list of tips at the bottom of the page if you're
struggling after giving it a shot.

Step#1. Restart your computer, or turn it on if it's already off.

Step#2. Watch for an "entering setup" message in the first few seconds after
turning on your computer. This message varies greatly from computer to
computer and also includes the key or keys you need to press to enter BIOS.

19
Different PC brands may use different BIOS hotkeys. Most modern
motherboards use the Delete key, but some are different. You can check if
there is a message in Windows startup screen telling you to press which key
to enter BIOS Utility. F2 and Delete are the most common.

Normally you can press

F2 for all Asus PCs to enter BIOS;
F2 or F12 for Dell PCs;
F10 for HP PCs;
F1 for Lenovo desktops,
F2 or Fn + F2 for Lenovo laptops;
F2 for Samsung PCs, etc.

The hotkey may be different depending on the version of your computer

model.

Here are some common ways you might see this BIOS access message based
on specific BIOS manufacturer, brand of motherboard, brand of Laptop or
Desktop Computer:
• Press F2 to enter setup
• Press <Del> to enter setup (MSI motherboard)
• <Del>: BIOS Setup (Award Modular BIOS)
• DEL BIOS Setup (Gigabyte motherboard)
• Press F1 to run Setup (American Megatrends Inc.)
• <F10=Setup> (HP)
• F2=Setup (Dell)
• Press F1 for Configuration/Setup (IBM)
• Press F2 to Setup (Lenovo)

20
Step#3 Quickly press the key or keys instructed by the previous message.
You may need to press the BIOS access key several times to enter BIOS.
Don't hold the key down or press it too many times or your system may error
or lock up. If that happens, just restart and try again.

Step#4 Use the BIOS setup utility as required.

That might mean managing memory settings, configuring a new hard drive,
changing the boot order, resetting the BIOS password, or other tasks.

How to Use BIOS

BIOS supports several hardware configuration options that can be
changed through the setup utility. Saving these changes and restarting the
computer applies the changes to the BIOS and alters the way BIOS instructs
the hardware to function.

Here are some common things you can do in most BIOS systems:
▪ Change the Boot Order
▪ Load BIOS Setup Defaults
▪ Flash (Update) BIOS
▪ Remove a BIOS Password
▪ Create a BIOS Password
▪ Change the Date and Time
▪ Change Floppy Drive Settings

▪ View System Voltages

What important settings are in the BIOS?

Some of the critical things one will need to know are the clock settings,
memory timing, boot order, and drive settings. Many of the BIOS settings are
automatic and very little needs to be changed, and any off-the-shelf computer
you purchase will ship with correctly configured BIOS.

a) CPU Clock
Don't modify the CPU clock speed settings unless you're going
overclock the processor. Today's modern processors and motherboard
chipsets properly detect the bus and clock speeds for the processors.
As a result, this information will generally be buried under a
performance or overclocking setting within the BIOS menus.

b) Memory Timings
Another aspect of the BIOS that can be adjusted is the memory
timings. It's typically unnecessary to change this setting if the BIOS can
detect the settings from the SPD(Serial Presence Detect) on the memory
modules. If the BIOS has an SPD setting for the memory, use it for the
highest stability with the computer.

c) Boot Order
Boot order is the most important adjustable setting in the BIOS.
The boot order determines the order in which the computer will boot to
each device to look for an operating system or installer. The options
typically include the hard drive, optical disk drive, USB and network.

The standard order at first startup is the hard drive, optical drive, and
then USB. This means that the computer will look for an OS on the

22
hard drive first, and then look for bootable media on a disc, and then
finally search for something on any plugged in USB devices.

Adjusting the boot order is important when you're installing a new

operating system or booting to a device other than your hard drive. You
have to change the order of the boot devices so that the one you want
to boot to is listed before any other bootable device.

For example, if you already have an operating system on the hard drive
but you want to boot to a bootable antivirus program instead, you have
to first change the boot order so that the disc drive is listed before the
HDD. When you restart your computer, the optical drive will be
searched first — in this case, the antivirus program will start instead of
the hard drive's operating system.

d) Drive Settings
With the advances made by the SATA(Serial Advance Technology
Attachment) interface, drive settings are only adjusted when you're
planning to use several drives in a RAID(Redundant Array of
Independent Disks) array or using it for Intel Smart Response caching
with a small solid-state drive.

1a) POST – Test the computer hardware and make sure no errors exist
before loading the operating system.

2b) BIOS DRIVERS – Low level drivers that give the computer basic
operational control over your computer’s hardware.

3c) BOOTSTRAP LOADER – Locate the operating system. If a capable

operating system is located, the BIOS will pass control to it.

4d) BIOS or CMOS SETUP – Configuration program that allows you to

configure hardware settings including system settings such as
computer passwords, time, and date.

WEEKS
Install Operating System (OS)
5-7 Lesson

I
In the previous lesson, you have learned about BIOS and its functions.
Accessing BIOS Utility is necessary and essential prior to Operating System
Installation.
You don't need to be a professional or refer to a confusing manual in
order to do so. You can install Windows 7 from a disc or flash drive. You can
also upgrade to Windows 7 from an older version of Windows. Doing a clean
install will wipe all the data off your computer and install Windows 7 as if it's
a new computer. Doing an upgrade will keep all your data and replace an
older version of Windows with Windows 7. You will need a Windows 7 product
key, or purchase Windows 7 within 30 days.
In this lesson, we are going to follow the process of installing an
operating system to your computer. In this case we will be using Microsoft
Windows 7 as our Operating System.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. Learn how to Install Operating System (OS) in accordance with
established installation procedures and to comply with end-user
requirements (TLE_IACSS9-12ICCS-IIa-j-30);
2. Configure BIOS settings prior to Operating System installation; and
3. Check the quality of the work undertaken in accordance with
established procedures.

System Software are programs that work behind the scene and
without user intervention in most situations perform other tasks such as
loading and running a program, protecting computer from viruses and
hackers, performing regular checks, controlling hardware devices connected
to the computer such as the printer, sharing of memory resources, and
coordinating connected computers or networks.

Operating System is a master control program that automatically runs

first when a computer is switched on and remains in the background until
the computer is turned off. It commonly comes preinstalled (on the boot
section of the computer’s main hard disk) and is usually the most complex
and largest program to be used by the computer. A computer user is typically
more affected by the capabilities and whims of the OS than by those of the
hardware. It is the most important software that runs on a computer. It is a
program that is responsible for the coordination, management, and sharing
of hardware resources and tasks in the computer.

The Utility Software is a program that performs maintenance tasks for

the computer’s resources, such as clean up and organizing files and programs
so they would load and work faster.

An Anti-Virus Software is a program designed to detect, identify, and

remove computer viruses and other malicious software (malware) from the
computer.

A Device Driver is a program that allows a particular hardware device

to work and communicate with the computer system.

The Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) is a program or code that

helps the processor to interact and control the other components in the
computer like monitor, printer, scanner, card reader, speakers, joystick,
microphone, camera, disc drives, TV/video/sound card, network cards, USB
ports, and hard drives. It also does the boot process before the operating
system do its work.
