CLASSIFICATION OF DATA

for RESEARCH
Special Science High School Grade 8
Quarter 3/ Week 5-8

1
FOREWORD

This self-learning kit is a ready-to-use material for the learners

to develop and enhance their skills in research. This will serve as
a guide in classification of data.

In this learning kit, the students will gain knowledge on

Classification of data.

This learning kit is composed of three parts:

1. What Happened. This section provides activities that will

prepare learners to the discussion of the topic provided in this
material.

2. What I Need To Know. This is the discussion section of the SLK.

Exercises after the discussion are also provided to further enrich
student’s learning of the topic.

3. What Have I Learned. This portion will gauge student’s learning

and will determine how much the learner has learned.

2
LEARNING COMPETENCY:

Discuss the different methods in data collection,

analysis, and presentation.

OBJECTIVE:
K: Identify the different classification of data.
S: classify the different given data base on the nature of
variable.
A: Develop awareness of the different classification of data.

3
WHAT HAPPENED?

PRE-ACTIVITY/ PRE-TEST:

Direction: Match the statements from column A to the word/s from

column B. Write the letter of your answer on the space provided
before each number.

A B

____ 1. Classification of data that A. Temporal data

can be measured
____ 2. Classification of data which B. Qualitative data
takes exact numerical value.
____ 3. Classification of data which C. Manifold data
takes numerical values within
a certain range. D. Simple data
____ 4. Data which is directly collected
by the researcher/investigator.
____ 5. Data which is presented in E. Ungrouped data
group.
____ 6 Data which is presented in F. Grouped data
individually.
____ 7. Classification of data with G. Primary data
only one characteristic.
____ 8 Classification of data with more H. Continuous data
than one characteristic.
____ 9. Data is classified according to I. Discrete data
its attribute or quality.
____ 10. When data is classified or J. Quantitative data
arranged by their time of
occurrence. K. Secondary data

4
WHAT I NEED TO KNOW? (DISCUSSION)

Classification of Data
- It is a systematic grouping of units according to
their common characteristics

Functions
• Simplifies and makes data more comprehensible
• Condense the data
• Brings out the points of similarity and dissimilarity
• Comparison of characteristics
• Brings out the cause-and-effect relationship
• Prepare the data for tabulation

Classification:

1. On the basis of nature of Variable

o Quantitative data
o Classification of data that can be measured
Example: height, weight, income, age, etc.

o Qualitative data
o Data is classified according to its attribute or
quality.
Example: gender, marital status, religion,
color, etc.

o Discrete data
o Classification of data which takes exact
numerical value (whole number)
Example: No. of children in the family, shoe
size, etc.

5
• Continuous data
o Classification of data which takes numerical
values within a certain range
Example:
Weight of Babies 0-2 months
No. of Month Boy(kg) Girl(kg)
0 2.5-4.3 2.4-4.2
1 3.4-5.7 3.2-5.4
2 4.4-7.0 4.0-6.5

• Chronological or temporal data

o When data is classified or arranged by their time
of occurrence such as years, months, weeks, days,
etc.
Example:

• Geographical or spatial data

o When the data is classified by geographical
regions such as countries, states, provinces, etc.
Example:

6
On the basis of Source of Collection
• Primary data
o Data which is directly collected by the
researcher/investigator.
Example:
Primary Quantitative data Primary Qualitative data
- Questionnaires - Participant Observation
- Structured interview - Unstructured interview

• Secondary data
o Data which is not directly collected by the
researcher/investigator.
Example:
Secondary Quantitative data
- Official statistics
Secondary Quanlitative data
- letters, articles, newspapers
On the basis of Presentation
• Grouped data
o Data which is presented in group.
Example:
Scores of 20 Students in Math Quiz
Scores No. of Student
96-100 4
91-95 6
86-90 5
81-85 3
76-80 2

Retrieved from: http://bit.ly/3r8ucuo (Suja Santosh)

7
• Ungrouped data
o Data which is presented individually
Example:
Ages: 28 years, 27 years, 23 years, 25 years
and 26 years.

On the basis on content

• Simple Classification
o Classification of data with only one
characteristic.
Example:

http://bit.ly/3r8ucuo

• Manifold Classification
o Classification of data with more than one
characteristic.
Example:
