Vice Chancellor’s Message
Higher education is an indispensable and the most significant part of today’s society. On one hand,
universities are invaluable resources for students to prepare for their future; on the other they serve as
centres of academic, social, cultural and economic development of a nation.

I think the fundamental principle of a university is to prepare democratic, citizens for an open, inclusive,
critical, secular and liberal society. Another objective of any higher education institution, I believe, is for it
to constantly strive to achieve a vigorous capacity for creation and change to foster in learners the ability
to pre-empt the future national needs and cater for them by incorporating the advances and discoveries
of science and technology. I always cherish the view that a university should transform society’s value
systems, motivations, attitudes and behaviours.

In addition, higher education aims to produce individuals who are guided and inspired by the principles
of pragmatic and skill-based knowledge. University of Sindh strives to promote learners’ knowledge,
skills and attitudes and prepare them for job market. I see Bureau of STAGS contributing for this cause
in a number of ways by providing youth several opportunities and helping them grow themselves as
competent candidates be future leaders and recognised professionals who not only excel in their careers
but also make this country a peaceful place to live and thrive.

My best wishes for the new magazine called ‘STAGAZINE’, I am sure this will prove to be one of the great
contributions for the overall upliftment and progress of the institution

PROF. DR. FATEH MUHAMMAD BURFAT

Vice Chancellor, University of Sindh, Jamshoro

From the Desk of Editor-in-Chief
Stagazine is the first ever annual magazine published by Bureau of Students Tutorial Guidance, Counselling
Services and Co-curricular Activities (STAGS). This project is very close to my heart; since the day I started
working for STAGS I wished to come up with something which can showcase students’ talent and potential,
portray their contribution for the university at different platforms, and more importantly provide them
opportunity to share their creative writing. The impetus behind coming up with Stagazine is basically
trifold; 1) to document the achievements, 2) to provide platform to students for creative writing and 3)
to know the success stories of alumni of STAGS who did brilliant jobs in co-curricular activities at home
and brought accolades to the university from several other institutions representing University of Sindh at
regional and national levels. University of Sindh, being a general university, we cater to the students from
various academic and linguistic backgrounds who are enrolled here in various disciplines ranging from Arts,
Business, Law, Information Technology and Computing, Natural and Social Sciences. Usually students from
Natural Sciences, Business and Computer Sciences do not get any chance to write outside their subjects,
hence they look for some platforms where they can share their writings and get feedback on them. During
my repeated interactions with students, I felt these youngsters wished to be involved in a writing club to
enhance their writing skills and share their creative writings with their fellow students. STAGS, along with
Debating and Music Societies, also introduced Writers Club in 2008 under which some essay writing tutorials
and competitions were organised. Stagazine is an offshoot of the Writers Club. Although some of its senior
members graduated in 2009, the club still has some great potential to carry out the regular publications of
this annual magazine.

One of the very few benefits pandemic times have brought about was a chunk of leisure time availed from
our busy schedules. Covid-19 study-break afforded us an opportunity to look back at the times we did a
parade of events and our students achieved so many rewards. On the announcement to recruit teams
of editorial and research boards, we received overwhelming response from students. 20 students were
selected to work on 2018 and 2019 editions of Stagazine. The team worked diligently, they collected data of
events, wrote stories, interviewed alumni and edited and proofread all the write ups; consequently Stagazine
18’ is here with you :) coming up with 19’ soon. I am earnestly grateful to the entire team for making it possible.

Happy reading! as ‘reading is like breathing in, writing breathing out’. Let’s not stop living!

Please share your feedback and comments on dir.stags@usindh.edu.pk Please let us know how can we
improve and make Stagazine worthwhile your time and attention. Cheers!

Aimen Javed Shaikh

University of Sindh is an institution where every single student prepares themselves for a brighter future.
Students are provided with propitious platforms to improve their oratory skills and confidence and to be
recognised at national level. A Tri-Lingual Debate competition is organised annually in which students
from different departments, compete and present their ideas for or against the proposition to win the first,
second or third position and the winning team gets the Champions Trophy.

The University of Sindh believes every single language

has its own worth and significance and love for
languages acts as a bridge bringing different cultural
communities together. Hence, students deliver their
speeches in English, Urdu & Sindhi language with
incredible confidence and proficiency, manifesting
that no student is any lesser than the other.

The jury is composed of professionals invited from

well-known institutions and organisations to find the
most deserving winner. The winners of English and Urdu
speech further compete to win the Allama Iqbal Shield at
the National Level, a Bi-lingual declamation contest which is
held every year in Karachi and Islamabad in collaboration with
Higher Education Commission of Pakistan.

Inter-departmental declamation contest 2018 proved that the University of Sindh has a huge variety of talent
and thus never stays behind when it comes to winning competitions. Students from various departments
impressed the judges and secured positions in all three language categories. The achievements do not
end here, students from the Institute of English Language and Literature hit the jackpot by winning the
Champions Trophy as the upshot of achieving maximum prizes.

Prof. Muhammad Zafar Laghari, Ms. Paras Katpar and Muhammad Faaiz Alam graced the event as the
honourable judges. The event was concluded with Prize distribution. The three position holders of Tri-lingual
debate competition received cash prizes, shields and certificates from VC-UoS, Dr. Fateh Muhammad
Burfat. Director IELL, Dr. Rafique Ahmed Memon along with winning students received the Trophy from the
chief guest.

The three day-long event was impressively conducted by

STAGS, organised with great hard work and dedication.
STAGS has been organising constructive programs
and activities for the enhancement of knowledge
and assertiveness of students since the 1990’s
which allows students to explore their talents and
improve their skills.

It is the unconditional support and patronage of

VC-UoS, Dr. Fateh Muhammad Burfat and efforts
of Director STAGS, Dr. Sumera Umrani and her
entire team that such successful and remarkable
8 events are organised periodically.
FOUNDER’S WEEK CELEBRATION
Yumien Hussun

Every Year, Bureau of STAGS dedicates the entire week to pay glowing tribute to
the Founding Father of University of Sindh, Jamshoro Honourable Allama I.I Kazi.
Outstanding homage is paid by highlighting great efforts and contributions of the
great sage and scholar by organising various activities and events in the main
campus of the university and in its regional campuses. This year, Founder’s Week
Celebrations were divided into three different segments started from April 5 to April
12 at university.

To symbolize the passionate love with clean and green

environment, the Plantation and Beautification Wing of the
varsity orgnised plantation activity on the birth anniversary
of Allama I.I. Kazi at the main campus. The ceremony was
inaugurated by Vice Chancellor, University of Sindh, Prof.
Dr. Fateh Muhammad Burfat accompanying Dr. Beekha
Ram Devrajani, Brigadier Irfan, DIG Hyderabad Javed
Alam Odho and ADC Jamshoro Sajida Qazi. The event
was attended by a huge number of faculty and students.

In the next segment, an intellectual lecture on the topic

“Life of Founder Allama I.I. Kazi” was organized by STAGS
at Shaikh Ayaz Auditorium where renowned scholar and
biographer of Allama I.I Kazi, Dr. Habibullah Siddiqui,
deliberated on different aspects of the life and works of Kazi Sahib. He
mentioned Allama Sahib was an an institution in himself which offers
us a huge range of subjects and philosophise to ponder and get
inspiration from. He further enlightened the efforts and services
of Kazi Sahib in establishing academic ground for the people of
Sindh. He concluded, that we as a nation and our institutions
need to learn from the life and works of Allama I.I. Kazi.

In continuation of Founder’s Week celebrations another

lecture was delivered by Mr Jawaid Bhutto, who is a US based
Sindhi scholar, well-known writer and former chairperson
of department of Philosophy, University of Sindh. Sharing
his knowledge on Sufism, Mr. Bhutto said that the two true
core values of Sufism are love and
friendship and these are the only values that form and establish peace in the
world. He further explained that “sufism is a passionate, relentless and unyielding
striving of human soul to recapture its essential, original identity; to retrieve its
lost innocence, glory and divine stature. This is exactly what heroines in Shah
Abdul Latif Bhittai’s verse symbolize- all six out of seven heroines tend to lapse on
one account or the other like us all modern men and then go about reclaiming
lost attributes; we as men also have defaulted on the vow we had made to our
Creator on the day we were created- we had made solemn commitment to
chart”.

PAKISTAN RESOLUTION DAY
(23RD MARCH, 2018)
Meenal Khuwaja

Eyes were soothed to see an aesthetic contrast of green and white till the sight could entrap in and similarly ears
didn’t fail to provide a means to be mobilized till the spirit with the slogans of “Pakistan Zindabad”, “ Pakistan ka
matlab kia? La illaha illallah” and many more near to heart phrases.

23rd March, 2018, as always Bureau of STAGS finely utilizing the

opportunity, framed a pleasant programme to commemorate
Pakistan Resolution Day that is also remembered as Lahore
Resolution Day, when Pakistan’s first constitution was adopted
as a bedrock for further national development.

This graceful day had commenced with a rally that

marks its initial point at the residence of Varsity’s vice
chancellor and destines to head over towards the PCB
(Pakistan cricket board) ground. Every participant of the
rally landed their allegiance towards the motherland by
helping carry the gigantic flag of 200 meters in length
towards the destination where Varsity’s Vice Chancellor
hoisted it in the accompaniment of Deans and different
faculty members.

Debuting in the excellent presidential address of VC, the curiously waited time came to proceed with the ever
engaging and zealous ceremony named as “Paigham-e-Pakistan”, for which untiring efforts were put. Aptly
capitalizing the massive space of the ground, several awe striking sports were held including, gymnastics, fist
fighting, boxing, track races and acrobatics along with the performances exclusively themed for this day.

Being an attendee of this celebration, not only every heart throbbed in patriotism for this country but also,
witnessed the gratitude for the ever exemplary leadership that we have been bestowed with. Be those our
national heroes to constitutionally strive to gift us with the greatest blessing of independence or our mentors
of present to make us beneficiary of their literary services through apt execution of their hitherto earned
experiences in the educational institutes that we are part of.

That day we were indeed fortunate to have between us some of

the highly dignified leaders of our country including the Vice
Chancellor of University of Sindh Prof. Dr. Fateh Muhammad
Burfat, The Chief Executive of Mehran Television Network
Ghulam Nabi Morai and Regional Director Higher
Education Commission, Karachi Mr Javed Ali Memon.

Eventually, getting done with all the planned

engagements for that day, the event had to wind up
even though we all wanted it to last a little longer.
Anyhow, concluding the enthusiastic celebrations of
the Pakistan Resolution Day, we all were left with the
consistent thoughtfulness to design our resolutions
being the proud and responsible citizens of this
motherland.
10
PAKISTAN INDEPENDENCE DAY
(14TH AUGUST, 2018)
Parisa Ujjan

In continuation of its legacy, University of Sindh celebrated

Independence Day with great zeal and zest. The atmosphere of
the main campus was filled with slogans of ‘Naara-e-Takbeer,
Allah-oAkbar’, ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ and ‘Dil Dil Pakistan-Jan Jan
Pakistan’. Presided by Vice Chancellor, Prof Dr Fateh Muhammad
Burfat along with the Deans, academic and administrative heads
and staff, faculty members and huge number of students, the day
started with hoisting the flag and carrying a 200-meter long flag in
the rally from Vice chancellor’s house to Hyder Bux Jatoi pavilion.

The whole day-long Independence day celebrations included cultural

dance performances, theatre plays, skits, national songs, speeches,
sports competitions, cricket match, concert and march past
by Sindh Police along with SU security wing. Vice Chancellor,
University of Sindh, Prof Dr, Fateh Muhammad Burfat regarded
Pakistan as the pride, love, land and ultimate identity which
is the result of countless efforts of our forefathers. Therefore,
it becomes each individual’s duty to serve the motherland
with the best of his capabilities.

The day was divided into formal activities at daytime and

informal musical celebrations in evening. Organised by
STAGS in collaboration with Directorate of Sports, the evening
ceremony was arranged solely for students. The major part
of which was musical performances in addition to the skit shows and various entertaining activities. The
winners of painting competition, held as an integrating activity in daytime, were given their prizes in evening
ceremony. Huge number of students joined the evening programme and added it as a memorable day in
the book of celebrations of University of Sindh, Jamshoro.

11
PAKISTAN DEFENCE DAY
(6TH SEPTEMBER, 2018)
Nida Gill
It is one of the profound traditions of University of Sindh, Jamshoro to
celebrate national days with immense gratitude and love at the
university, in order to give honour and tribute to our ever-living
national heroes. STAGS is always on the forefront to arrange
special events for national historical days because every
member associated with it knows really well that youth
serve as a great pillar of a country. History is evident
that youth brought many historical revolutions, so
STAGS always actively organises exciting events in the
premises of university to make students aware of great
sacrificial history of our national heroes. University of
Sindh is celebrating Defense Day of Pakistan for many
years, but it is getting grand with every passing year
by active participation of students and great interests
of every single member of University who made such
magnificent events successful.

Bureau of STAGS in collaboration with Institute of Business Administration

(IBA), University of Sindh, Jamshoro celebrated the magnificent event
of Defense Day of Pakistan on 6th September 2018 where the event
was inaugurated at Shaikh Ayaz auditorium with the zealous
remarks of worthy Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Fateh Muhammad
Burfat which state that: “September 6 is not merely the day
to reiterate our firm solemn pledge to protect our sacred soil
and her ideological boundaries; but it is also the occasion to
pay sparkling rich homage and tribute to the martyr heroes
who laid down their lives to defeat nefarious enemy designs to
invade our beloved homeland”. Many worthy guests attended
the ceremony including SSP Jamshoro Sir Bashir Ahmed
Brohi. His presence does not merely give charm and spark to
the event, but his energetic personality and complementary
speech also develop enthusiasm and spirit of hope among
students.

The glorious ceremony was divided into different segments and interactive activities. In the formal session
a flag march was presided by Vice Chancellor which started from Central Library. Furthermore, many
students participated in speech declamation contests and present a heart touching speech imbued with
true spirit of patriotism. There were many skids, tableaus and stage performances which were an enthralling
depiction of true-life stories of our great heroes who sacrificed their lives for the integrity and prosperity
of our motherland. The national songs were played throughout the event and captivate everyone’s
attention. The chauvinistic scenario reminds the bravery of our valiant arm forces to a jam-packed youth
audience. Afterward, all day long celebration leads off by a great initiative of mega plantation ceremony
at SMBB Convention Centre. This momentous eve ended by giving the heartiest tributes and respects to
the martyrs of Pakistan who sacrificed their lives in the name of the country.

Student Financial Aid Office

University of Sindh admits a large number of students, majority belonging to rural areas and
disadvantaged families. Realising that education has become very costly and it is difficult for
them to pursue their education due to financial constraints, university has taken initiative for
providing financial relief to meritorious and needy students with the financial assistances through
various internally and externally funded scholarship programmes.

In order to execute bursaries and financial assistance, University of Sindh has established the
Student Financial Aid Office (SFAO), which selects needy and meritorious students so that they
can have access to education and complete their degree programmes. Following are some of
the well-known opportunities of funding available for students.
# Name of Scholarship Sponsors/Donors
1. HEC Need-Based Scholarship Higher Education Commision of Pakistan
2. Pakistan Scottish Scholarship for Women British Council
3. Need-Cum-Merit Scholarship Auqaf, Religious Affairs, Zakat & Ushr Department, Government of Sindh
4. Minority Scholarship Ministry of Minority, Govt. of Pakistan
5. Freeships & Bursary University of Sindh, Jamshoro
6. Scholarship for Disable Students University of Sindh, Jamshoro

13. Punjab Educational Endowment Fund (PEEF) The Government of Punjab

All Scholarships/Financial Aid cases are routed through Student Financial Aid Office (SFAO) under the
Directorship of Dr. Fiza Qureshi and her dedicated staff who work diligently to provide financial relief to
our students with fair and impartial selection criteria. Our team reached out to some of the recipients of
financial aid who have shared their stories with us. Here is one such story for our readers.

“My name is Baboo Meghwar from Village Kounral district Tharparkar, currently I am studying in Software
Engineering As I belong to backward area of Tharparkar, where pupils after completing secondary or
higher secondary education mostly go in search of any odd job to support their family. But I had some
motive in my life to achieve higher education but due to poor financial condition it was almost impossible.
Thanks to SAFAO, University of Sindh that made it possible for me. It was very difficult for me to pay such a
high amount of fee, support my studies and manage lodging expenditure. I had to take loans from many
people to fund my studies and survive away from home. Offices like SFAO are a great support for students
like me who come from less privileged backgrounds. I am grateful to HEC for providing us scholarships so
that we can make our dreams a reality”.

LECTURE ON
LITERATURE AND LIFE
Nida Gill

According to T. S. Eliot: ‘The purpose of literature is to turn blood into ink’. (T. S. Eliot):

It is the renowned legacy of the Institute of English Language and Literature to engage its students in
various interactive activities. In collaboration of Bureau of STAGS, Institute of English Language & Literature
(IELL) organised a lecture programme under the aegis of Amina Khamisani lecture series at Sheikh Ayaz
Auditorium, University of Sindh. The event became phenomenal with the presence of renowned poet,
intellectual writer and motivational speaker Professor. K. S. Nagpal as the event’s guest speaker.

The wonderful event was inaugurated by the

presidential remarks of Vice Chancellor, University of
Sindh, Prof. Dr. Fateh Muhammad Burfat: ‘Literature
and life enjoyed a subtle, integral and apparently
imperceptible link, he further quoted various
prominent figures to represent the importance of
literature in one’s life’.

The faculty members and students of IELL possess

an immense thirst for knowledge which was evident by
their presence as a jam packed audience to the capacity
of the hall. This kind of seminars and lectures serve as a
significant step in mentoring students who are in direct
contact with literature.

The wonderful guest speaker began his lecture with complimentary remarks. He asserted: ‘’It was only
through literature that one demystified the deepest of one’s being, one’s relation to society, to God and
the purpose of one’s brief sojourn on earth’’. Being a student of literature, I have personally experienced
that when we read a book we are actually feeding our brain and the book nourishes us in whole. Prof.
Nagpal further elaborated the importance of literature: “Man remains incarcerated in hundred different
personal, social, political, cultural and religious cocoons. These self-created and socially-imposed shells
blur the vision, limits his experience and restrict his quest for truth. Literature alone is capable of shattering
all these taboos and territorial bindings”. Prof. Nagpal inculcated many different quotes and sayings of
historical scholars in her lecture like Aristotle, Plato, Socrates,
Shakespeare, Shah Latif, Sachal Sarmast, Rumi and other
mystic poets. It not merely adds beauty in the lecture but
also increased the knowledge of the audience.

This magnificent event concluded with the

audience questions from audience to which Prof.
Nagpal offered all-inclusive and comprehensive
answers. According to a famous old saying: only
the very weak -mindsed refuse to be influenced
by literature and poetry. This event proved to be
the most fruitful event for the audience in general
and particularly for the students of literature.

Gaining industry experience has significant benefits.

Internship helps students gain technical knowledge within
the industry of their choice but also helps learning to learn
how to interact with professionals in a workplace setting and
develop essential soft skills like time management, organizations,
adaptability, problem-solving, and team work.

Mr. Awais Panhwar also disseminated knowledge about job

opportunities abroad and how to avail them. He also added that
Internships not only helps students financially but also groom

WORKSHOP ON
DISASTER PREPAREDNESS &
RESPONSE FOR VOLUNTEERS
Nehal Arbab
One-day training programme on “Disaster
Preparedness and Response” for SU volunteers was
organised at SU by Agha Khan Office for Territory
and Quick Rustic Improvement Programme in
collaboration with the Bureau of Students’ Tutorial
Guidance/Counseling Services & Co-Curricular
Activities (STAGS) at Shaikh Ayaz Auditorium.

This programme was held in October 2018. It was

organised for to guide the volunteers to manage the
crowd and handle the situations which can cause panic.
The training programme was very beneficial because right
after this program entry test for the 2019 batch took place in
the university and volunteers showed great control in it.

The trainers prepared more than 150 SU volunteers who render their services at different programmes of
the university. The students who were unaware of the situations like these gained wide knowledge about
panic situations and disaster preparedness. Currently, these students are working as SU Voluteers.

The volunteers showed great dedication when the entry test arrived. It
is really hard to cope with situations like these and especially guiding
and managing 20,000 plus individuals. The further training students
get from this program was rescue training which guided them to start
practical work not only at university but in your professional life as
well.

The students who participated in this training programme were mostly

from the social sciences, because they are always participating in
such kind of programs and training and this also helped them in their
assignments and presentations, and this training program had very
positive feedback. VC-SU Prof. Dr. Fateh Muhammad Burfat and VC
Malir College of Science and Technology Prof. Dr. Mehtab Karim also
joined the programme and shared their views.

Dr. Burfat, praising the significance of youth prepping, said that “SU
volunteers had continuously done fabulous work, particularly on the
noteworthy events of pre-entrance tests, Autonomy Day, Defense Day,
worldwide conferences, symposium, and scholastic conferences; when they
have overseen the challenge of dealing with swarming swarms”.

Dr. Karim said, “I am so happy to see the enthusiastic soul of SU

youth additionally the mentor-ship openings given to them
by vice-chancellor Dr. Burfat”.

Prior, ISO Certification Cell In-charge Dr. Ameer Ali

Abro presented a welcome note and highlighted the
need of such trainings for university students. Prof.
Dr. Shahabudin Mughal of Abida Taherani Sindh
Advancement Ponders Centre talked about the
importance of calamity hazards reduction techniques
through readiness and fast reaction initiatives.. Chief
of STAGS Dr. Sumera Umrani submitted a vote of much
appreciation and concluded the proceedings of the
programme.

TRAINING ON
PUBLIC SPEAKING
BY MR. MUHAMMAD TAQI JAWAD
Roshni Anwar
The Bureau of STAGS has always encouraged and up-lifted
students’ morale by providing them the right platforms for
their wholesome personality growth. Therefore, not only the
academic activities but also the co-curricular activities are
also given equal prominence in the University of Sindh,
Jamshoro.

Following this tradition, a workshop/seminar was

organised on debate/declamation and public
speaking on 12th October 2018, where a national
champion Mr. Muhammad Taqi Jawad, Asst. Director
FM Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) conducted an
informative session as a guest speaker and shared
some important points relevant to communication
skills and oratory. This was a one-day workshop and
was conducted at the Shaikh Ayaz Auditorium, where
a huge number of audiences, particularly students, gathered to listen to the esteemed guest speaker.
Being an All-Pakistan debater and a very eminent personality in the field of public speaking Mr. Jawad
beautifully explained the art of declamation to the budding debaters. He shared his own life experiences
and all the struggles he faced to reach where he is today.

By reflecting back on his life, he guided the students about the challenges and
hurdles that come along the journey of becoming a good public speaker and
how one can overcome them. Mr. Taqi Jawad also told the audience, how
a declamation contest can enhance the public speaking skills. In addition
to that it can also promote developing healthy arguments and creative
thinking. Moreover, this can promote respect for others’ opinion and can
build tolerance and respect among students for each other. The main
motivation behind organizing declamation contests is to instill in our
students, the aptitude of public speaking and the capacity to address
the crowd with certainty, confidence and ardor. We, at the Bureau of
Stags, have never ignored this specific specialty of public speaking.

Although Mr Jawad Taqi is not an alumnus of University of Sindh,

Jamshoro, but he has always been connected with the Bureau of STAGS,
University of Sindh, Jamshoro. Due to his acclaimed position in debating
community, Mr. Jawad has always been invited in many national debate
competitions as a judge or as an esteemed guest. Whenever any
delegation of students from UoS goes on any provincial or national level
declamation contest in Islamabd, Mr. Muhammad Taqi Jawad always welcomes them and kindly offers
all the guidance and support. The Bureau of STAGS, therefore, owes Mr. Muhammad Taqi Jawad a special
vote of thanks for his selfless guidance, cordial association and generosity.

SEMINAR ON
PATRIOTISM & NATIONALISM
AT DESERT HAWK 18 DIVISION
Kashmala Azhar

Ken Robinson once said that “ creativity is as important now in education as literacy and we should treat it with
the same status”.

Considering the above quotation our university is doing the same. University of Sindh always has been active
not only in curricular but also in extracurricular activities as well as their aim is to polish a students’ hidden talent
and also to improve their competency along with working on students academic performance. They encourage
students to take part in extra-curricular events not only inside the university but also outside the university.

When we are talking about such events so I remember an event organised by Pakistan Army in the month of
April at Desert Hawk 18 Division, Cantonment Hyderabad. Recently University of Sindh got an invitation from
Pakistan Army for their seminar. That seminar was based on patriotism and nationalism and when it’s a call for
motherland it’s just not possible for Sindh University’s student to stand in a back row.

Our delegates with active staff of STAGS reached Army headquarter 18 Division of Pakistan on the given time. It
was a wonderful day breeze also had a pleasing smell of patriotism in it. When we arrived at our destination we
found that so many other universities present there too namely Mehran University of Engineering and Technology,
Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, National University of Modern Languages Hyderabad and
Sindh Agriculture University, Tando Jam.

It was such an interactive event where we got a chance to visit the exhibition of military weapons and armors
they use for protecting our motherland. We also had an amazing ride in military vehicles. Thereafter, in a seminar,
GOC Hyderabad addressed the participants. He mentioned that the “talent and efforts never go unnoticed” .
He appreciated the active participation of Sindh University students. We had a great time there and we learned
many new things from all of those army gentlemen. The greatest of all we learned from those respectable khaki
shirts was that the love for motherland is endless and if you get a chance to do something for your country then
do it and just do not be afraid of losing your life because this land worth more than our selves do.

WORKSHOP ON COMPERING
HOW TO PRESENT YOURSELF ON TV/RADIO
BY DR. MEHMOOD-UL-HASSAN MUGHAL
Yumein Hussun
Everything you want is on the other side of fear.” - Jack Canfield

We humans need someone to push us forward even

when we are failing or falling down. You become closer
to people when you share your story with them and that
is often the most important thing when it comes to public
speaking, hosting programs, live programs, and much
more. When you come in contact with people, when you
host programmes you need to understand that you are still
dealing with humans who might be just like your friends,
your family members. The best thing to do when you host
a programme is to motivate people you are speaking to.
Inspire people. Let them know that no matter what life brings
to them, they can face it.

“Too many of us are not living our dreams because we are living
our fears.” – Les Brown

Hosting radio and television programmes, compering on stage is a very difficult task to do. It is not something that
everyone can do. It is something that only those can do who practice a lot or those who practice a lot can do this
better and can be successful in doing this because it needs a lot of focus and a lot of attention. You need to pay
attention to the very little details when you are hosting a programme when you are performing on the stage, when you
are handling a very massive crowd or a very huge mass. It becomes
very difficult to do that. So, here are many helpful tips that were given
by a well renowned TV personality, a profound writer Dr. Mehmood
Ul Hassan Mughal. By following these steps one can actually see
and understand the real purpose and the real job of hosting
and how to actually do this.

These tips were given in a workshop held at Shaikh Ayaz

Auditorium University of Sindh in 2018.This workshop was
attended by a lot of students and a very huge change was
seen in the performance of students after they attended
this workshop.

Dr. Mehmood Ul Hassan Mughal provided tips for TV

compere, radio hosting and for students performing on
stages., He talked about how one can actually get better
at this thing and can develop skills in this field. He said
more attention should be given to how you speak when
you are on the stage when you are facing a huge crowd or even when you are on a radio programme. How to talk to
your listeners and how to convey your message to the listeners and how to engage your audience when you are in a
radio programme. You need to make sure that you are speaking with the listener and that you are having a one on
one conversation with them and that you are not actually facing a huge mass but rather you are actually talking to
individual people. You need to pay attention to how you your listener will listen to you and what your listener want to
listen to. Other tips that he provided for the students performing on stage, that we have this fear in us that we cannot
perform well or when we come on stage we have less confidence to face our audience. We can overcome this by
actually really focusing on what to say and what not to say. Excluding things that are not important and including
things that are very significant. Leaving all those things and extra things which are not needed. Most important is to
feel relaxed and to be focused on the goal that you have to accomplish. Making a list and then amending them when
needed is better than having no backup. Lastly, he emphasized how can a mic (microphone) be your best friend and
a worst enemy if its mishandled. Stay strong, the road might seem endless but it is worth the wait.

opportunities for students to take part in and prove themselves.
Special thanks to the Vice Chancellor Dr. Burfat that he himself
has helped in overcoming all the obstacles and paving ways to
success.

UGRAD ORIENTATION 2018
Nida Gill

Satisfaction lies in the effort, not merely in the attainment. STAGS is a platform which that has always lifted
students confidence by introducing various academic and extra-curricular activities.

Due to the great deal of effort and endurance, STAGS for the very first time arranged a session related to
Undergraduate Scholarship (UGRAD) for semester exchange in the USA. All the aspirant candidates from
University of Sindh participated and learned about the requirements and application process for the semester
abroad scholarship. The activity was held in November 2018 at Sheikh Ayaz Auditorium, University of Sindh as its
basic objectives were to provide UGRAD information to the students of University of Sindh. It was for the first time
when all guidelines were made available in the premises of university.

The session began with the videos of SU-UGRAD Alumni’s

who have been to United States for a semester exchange
program. They shared their experiences in their short videos
which was quite inspiring and motivational. Those videos
presented such a charming adventures and exposures of
their exchange program that everyone who were present
in the auditorium was imbued with the supreme spirit of
enthusiasm and optimism.

The event was inaugurated by the guest speaker who is a

very famous personality of Pakistan US Alumni Network Miss
Hima Zafar. She vividly explained the scholarship, its criteria
and basic benefits UGRAD provides to the selected candidates.
Onwards a panel discussion was organised among the alumni
students of the same US scholarship including Miss. Ansa Rajput(IBA),
Miss Aliza Qadeer (IBA), Miss. Dilrukh Zehra (IR), Miss. Nuzhat (IELL), Miss.
Faiza Lakho (IELL), Miss. Perah (IELL) along with worthy Vice Chancellor, University of Sindh, Jamshoro where the
panel was hosted by Mr. Sanjay Mathrani from Department of Media and Communication Studies. The alumni
shared their experience and journey they had while applying and studying there.

Through this occasion, students of University of Sindh got a

privilege to know about the prestigious and golden opportunity
UGRAD provides. This platform has always performed its
role for the betterment of students. Their success was
evident when so many candidates from University of
Sindh were shortlisted for the UGRAD interview. Again,
under the supervision of Dr Sumera Umrani- Director of
STAGS and SU-UGRAD ALUMNI panel mock interviews
were organized which helped out the candidates and
strengthen their confidence.

These kind of seminars and workshops serve as a

significant step in mentoring students and giving them
a path to fulfil their dreams. Henry Ford states that:
‘Thinking is the hardest work there is, which is probably
the reason very few are engaged in it’. 25
UNITED NATIONS VOLUNTEERS
PROGRAMME (UNVP) RECRUITMENT
Sanjay Mathrani

Being successful is the desire of all of us residing over this lovely planet. It does not matter whether the concerned person is a child,
youth, or the old aged, at each and every stage of our wide life span, it is our inbuilt desire to be successful and proceed forward
consistently towards more massive success.

And when you have a supportive facilitating institute like Bureau of Students, Tutorial Guidance Counseling Services & Co-Curricular
Activities (STAGS) in your home university which has always played a vital role to channelize the capacities and capabilities of the
student through a managed way then there is no need to worry.

Back to 2018 when I was doing bachelor’s in Media and Communication Studies and also engaged in some co-curricular activities
routinely I used to visit the STAGS office to get the updates, I can’t exactly quote the date and time but I’m sure she was Dr. Sumeera
Umrani, Director STAGS who shared me that ‘Sanjay people like you should have to participate in the global exposures’ and luckily I
got to know that United Nations Volunteers has announced a program, in which University students can do volunteer work to make
the masses aware about ‘Civic and Voter Education.’

It was an online application on their website, a long procedure, interrogative questions, and many more
to address you and your innovative ideas where society can change their mindset, and can little bit
educate more about the importance of the vote. At the same time, I was doing journalism so engaged
in a busy routine I didn’t note somewhere that I have applied for this program, but a miracle in the
shape of an interview call came to me with a detailed description, and STAGS office was a place
where they took an interview. According to details, more than 100 candidates applied but just 27
were shortlisted and appeared in the interview when I reached the venue, I was really surprised
by the dresses and looks of my fellow candidates. They were looking so formal and there was
a huge difference between myself and them in terms of appearance. I was totally in a ‘Desi’
dress while they were in a westernized look. Seeing all this I wondered whether I am among the
same or not because to me it was a totally different world, maybe the difference was due to
the urban and rural culture, I from being an underprivileged and unserved area like Thar was
feeling misfit.

The interviews were being held in alphabetical order as my name starts from ‘S’ so I had to wait
long for my turn. When my turn came and the interview started, firstly I was asked some formal
questions but then at the time of conclusion, they asked to share my thoughts or experience.
At this moment of time, my experience of journalism helped me. Being a journalist, I was
familiar with local communities, their ground-based issues, political influence, vote banks, the
population of area, and concerned authorities. I told them all I knew about my locality and I
offered them the areas like Amarkot, Tharparkar, Mirpurkhas, Hyderabad, Jamshoro, and Kotri
I would feel honored and happy to help them voluntarily though it was not necessary for them
to select me. On hearing this a smile came on their faces and I got a positive vibe that really
liked what I said.

After a couple of days, I received an email that among 7 were shortlisted from Sindh University and I was among them. We were
called to Islamabad for the orientation of a six-month project. During our stay in Islamabad, we got introduced to diverse UNVs
across Pakistan.

The period from March to September 2018 was really tough but interesting as well. Their
requirement was to report to them 4 activities in a month, but myself and my colleague
Fatima Rind tended to do much more work and activities then we were supposed to do.
Wherever we used to go we tried to educate people about ‘Civic and Voter Education’
. We faced a lot of obstacles and hurdles in arranging session, and community
engagement, but social mobilization and public relations tools worked effectively.

Being from a lower middle-class family in a rural area I was entirely aware of
social problems, but what I learned in this period of six months that people
are not sensible about the right channels. This volunteerism completely
changed my life forever, not just I performed the activities that were given
but also helped marginalized communities in solving many of their issues.
I’m very proud of the fact that even today people know and admire me for
the work that I did in those areas. By all this experience I came to know that
relations are not project based but permanent many of the times. When
26 organizations like the UN appreciate a person like me, I feel that many people
can participate and introduce themselves to the global exposures.
MUSICAL CONCERT OF THE KASHMIR
BAND & HOREYA ASMAT
Salal Mughal

Bureau of STAGS in collaboration with Zong 4G Network Group organized musical evening at campus
for the students as well as faculty where renowned musical bands and artists of Pakistan performed at
university stage.

For mesmerizing the soul, Horeya Asmat performed

along with her traditional instrument “Dhol” with
some pop beats and in the end, the Kashmir Band
with an energetic entry just rocked the evening
where thousands of students along with their friends
and family joined the occasion.

The occasion was sponsored by Zong Network and

the whole management was under the responsibility
of Bureau of STAGS.

We witnessed a historical discipline of the students and their

friends from the other institutions where without any mishap,
the whole event was managed by male and female volunteers who maintained decorum among the
audience and also gave proper protocols to all the artists and musicians.

The performance stage was installed at Arts Faculty Ground, University of Sindh, Jamshoro where a huge
numbers of students from other universities also joined the evening which was held first time ever in the
history of university.

Bureau of STAGS always wishes to bring opportunites of interaction, tolorance and harmoney for the
institution as well as students. This event similarly opened a door to welcome artists from across Pakistan
at the land of music and peace, Jamshoro and we hope that the tredition of having such programmes
will continue in future as well.

CLUBS & SOCIETIES
AT UNIVERSITY OF SINDH
Official Announcement

Students play vital role in the development of institutions through

their participation in the curricular and extra-curricular activities.
The students are highly motivated and aware about their role in
the developmental process of the institute as many students of
Sindh University had brought many laurels to the institute in the
past years by taking part in different regional and national events
and organizing national-level events.

Besides academic excellence, the university

display dynamic literary, creative and artistic
abilities and aptitude for co-curricular activities.
In order to provide them with opportunities to
pursue their passion in the company of like-minded individuals, Bureau of STAGS
is introduced six (6) co-curricular societies and clubs from this year covering 44
different areas of learning and skills developing where each club had a complete
team working for their related activities and such groups play an essential role
in polishing talent and personality to make them self-groomed individuals when
they enter the professional world. Membership can be obtained through formal
registration procedure.

The societies include Debating Society, Media Club, Writers’ Club, Art & Music
Club, Iqra Society (for Qirrat, Na’at & Hamd) and Software Developers Club.

Such societies allow students to meet their recreational and vocational needs, whatever be the interest of
the student, there is a good chance that there is a society or club involved in that activity that one can sign
up with. Many societies are ranked high nationally and have also fared consistently well in competitions
in the most diverse of social, academic and diplomatic domains.

THE LONGEVOUS LEGEND OF
SINDHI PEASANTS
Calimullah Khoso

It was heyday of Industrial Revolution in Europe and amidst the battles of European powers; the Britain surprisingly set its
foot in the subcontinent with the naked intentions of trade. After plundering scores of cities and states in subcontinent,
the Britain captured Sindh in 1943 in the aftermath of Battle of Miani which is
chronicled to have fought between the forces of British Raj and the Baluch
Army of Talpur Amirs of Sindh. The feudal system in Sindh at that time was
on the cusp of its zenith. After conquering Sindh, the British Administration
greatly fanned the ambers of already existing feudal system in Sindh. The
properties and bounties of poor and middle class people were confiscated
and handed over to Jagirs who helped the British Raj in overtaking Sindh. That
said, the British Government therefore decided to build the Sukkur Barrage in
1923 in order to increase its influence and hold agriculture production.

To counter the highhandedness of British Government, the Allottee Movement

was set in pace. The leaders of the movement protested two demands.
Firstly, the unpopulated lands are to be distributed amongst peasants and
secondly, the peasants who are living along the bank of Sukkur & Korti Barrage
should be allotted their lands on easy terms. Afterwards, the movement’s
demands were not exactly met on the requested terms. It is pertinent to
mention that ‘allottee Movement’ was part of ‘Sindh Hari Tehreek’. The Sindh
Hari Tehreek was meant to promote and address the socio-economic issues of
underprivileged masses and more notably, the rural class. There could be much
discussion about the Sindh Hari Tehreek but, I intend to focus on the role Hyder Bux
Jatoi in bringing about the change in peasant struggle.

It is commonly believed in Sindhi Society that Abdul Qaidr Indhar’s struggle for peasants’ freedom is seconded by
Hyder Bux Jatoi; The man who, in 1945, farewelled his government service and joined the Hari Committee. In the
meantime, he came to seen as the messiah for the poor peasants of Sindh. He was a citizen of Sindh Province Larkana
and was born on Oct 10, 1901 in the Jatoi tribe of the Makrani Baloch. He sought his early education in Madarssatul
Islam School in Sindh. He was a bright student with sheer intellect as alumni of School would later bid. In 1923, he
passed matriculation from Bombay University securing first position in Sindh. As years went by, he graduated with
honors, achieving a distinction in Farsi from Bombay. As he consistently pursued his education, likewise, he closely
witnessed the brutal victimization of poor peasants in the hands
of the Britain. His joining of Sindh Hari Tehreek was probably the
cause of mass brutalization of labor class. Also, it is believed
that Sir was inspired by Karl Marx’s ideology of Class
Struggle. If we discuss about Sindhi progressives from
whom and their struggle he might have been inspired,
the prominent names would be Hosh Muhmmmad
Sheedi, Maulana Ubedullah Sindhi, and Abdul Qadir
Indhar, as accounts would have it.

Cannily aware he must have been of would-be

ramifications of the movement he had led in the
first place. But formidable he was, as one would
experience by contemplating over his writings
thoroughly and about his sleepless struggles and
efforts and the way he let himself poured in to 31
provide justice to poor peasants against the oppression of the waderas (landlords).

After going the Sindh Hari Tehreek, he officially issued a weekly titled Hari Haqdar (Deserving Peasant) to promote and
protect the rights of peasants. He was later chosen as the President of ‘Hari Committee’ at the Hari Conference in 1947.

Besides being a Hari Rights Activist and Sindhi Progressive, Sir was also a celebrated poet as well. He was as rationalist,
critical and progressive people’ poet as he was kind and loving man in his practical life. For his critical poetry, he
was put behind the bars. His publication named Tohfa-e-Sindh (The Gift of Sindh) made feudal lords very upset
and angry and that was the cause of him being jailed, as accounts had it. Sir honored Sindh Darya (Indus River) in
one of his collections of The Gift of Sindh composing a dearly poetry named as Shah Darya (King River), which reads
hereinunder:
“O soul of Sindh, O grace of Sindh
O beauty decoration and pomp of Hind
O pride of the world, O sight of God
The shelter of Rich and the Poor
O cloud of kindness, O glamour of Goodness
My love and Zest, every moment says
Welcome to thee, O River King, a thousand welcomes”
The translation is taken from Raza Naeem’s article in TFT.

His another famous written poem titled ‘Jiye Sindh’ (Long Live Sindh) is now widely used as greeting substituting
Salam , Khuda Hafiz, and Ya Ali Madad.

After partition, he continued to fight for the freedom of peasants from the tyranny of landlords. Be it cultural, political,
economic, or social rights. He once was reported to have said that ‘the only way forward to free the peasant class
from waderas is the equal land distribution amongst peasants’ as panacea. In 1960, he was once again imprisoned in
Quetta jail during the reign of dictator Ayub Khan and released after two years.

In February 1964, the Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai visited Pakistan.

When he came to visit the Ghulam Muhmmad Barrage, he wished
to meet Hyder Bux Jatoi and later, a meeting was arranged and
they exchanged greetings. The Chinese Premier honored the
badge of China’s revolutionary Mao Zedong to Sir Hyder Bux
Jatoi, as Raza Naeem put it in his article in the ‘Express
Tribune’ named ‘The Mao of Sindh’ about Hyder Bux Jatoi
comparing Mao’ s and Jatoi’s struggle for labor class.

Hyder Bux Jatoi fought tooth and nail not just for
the freedom and rights of labor class but, for every
neglected, dejected, and deprived community of
Pakistan in general and Sindh in particular throughout
his lifespan. To honor his memory, the people of
Sindh associated Hyder Chowk (In Hyderabad) with
publishing house and Residence of Hyder Bux Jatoi. He
is also coined as Baba-e-Sindh (Father of Sindh) by
the people of Sindh.

I would end my writing to dedicate few words to honor Sir Hyder Bux Jatoi for his relentless struggle for labor class.

Long live the Son of Sindh

Long may you live in every Hari’s heart
For you was the messiah of Hari
O Hyder, praise be to you
Every seed of grain thanks you
For you have fought for once
Every land misses you
For you have trudged on once
O Hyder, Son of Sindh
Long may you live in every Hari’s heart!

a sen-ior member and I used to share my experience to the newbie students for helping them in building their confidence.

Zobia: That’s inspiring. What is STAGS in your eyes?

Dr. Masroor: I am an eye witness of the productivity and revolution that occurred in STAGS during the Directorship of Madam

Kazim: I’m Kazim Syed. I was a student at the University of Sindh, jamshoro. I have had an affiliation with the Bureau of STAGS
for almost 20 years because of my association with it is way before I started university as a student. Currently, I’m working as
a Project Manager in the Research and development foundation but I’m also looking after all the Emergency activi-ties of the
organization which includes but not limited to Emergency relief projects along with that I’m also looking after my own project
in Jamshoro which is related to youth empowerment through employment which has always been my passion to engage
youth in productive activities and to empower them for their future.

Roshni: Sir could you please tell us about yourself and your association with the
Bureau of STAGS?

Kazim: Well to be honest, as I said earlier, my association with STAGS started

way before when I was a student at university. Basically, my brother used to do
speeches. There was a competition at university in which he participated and I
came just as an audience to cheer him up. I was, at that time, in grade 2 or 3 maybe
but, I remember while judges were pre-paring results, they asked me If I wanted to
speak, so I did my first speech there. Well, it may be a fact but my interest in de-
bates and speeches started from that point. Since, then, I kept myself linked with
STAGS. Formally I joined STAGS when I was in my second year of university and
started participating in different debate competitions and represented university in
decla-mations contests in other institutes at regional and national level.. There
used to be exposure visits back then in University of Sindh, so whenever any
delegation used to come at the university, I used to be one of the few volunteers
who used to lead the groups. At that time STAGS was only limited to debate
completions but it then, slowly and gradually it evolved as it added different
activities and organised events as well. Therefore, my initial participation in the
Bureau of STAGS was also limited to debates and speech contests. But when I came
into my final year, I started a small project in STAGS. It was to bring out a new magazine
for the university and it was the first ever magazine published under STAGS. The magazine
was named as “The Memoir” and was published in 2007. I initiated the project, so I was one
of the editors as well and it makes me so happy that after so many years once again STAGS
is launching its own magazine.

Roshni: Did you ever get an opportunity to work in the Bureau of STAGS not as a student but as an official member of STAGS?

Kazim: I worked in STAGS as a Programme Coordinator for almost 3 years and I used to plan and organise different events
and activities. I started setting rules and grounds for certain things because more and more competitions were coming. We
started conducting trials, we started recruiting volunteers and then we started student counselling as well. We also initiat-
ed a debating society. These were the things that we introduced when I was working in STAGS. When I see STAGS today, it
has evolved into a great platform, a separate department that is solely helping students and providing assistance and
opportunities to develop and nourish their talents.

Roshni: How was the university life at your time and do you find any difference in the university life of today and back then?

Kazim: I think, it was very nice back then when I was in university. Because that was the time when technology was taking
over, we were the first generation to have cell phones in university even then, in my first and second year of university, I didn’t
have a cell phone. The Internet was not common but, with the passage of time, people were getting more acquainted with
it. Around then there was more socialization which I don’t see that much these days despite the fact that individuals have
greater availability yet there is less socialization with the surrounding people. Back then there was more socialization. We
used to hang out after classes and had huge gatherings of companions which I scarcely observe today. In addition, there
were fewer open doors for us back then, yet these days you would see there are more opportunities for the youth. Every other
day there is a youth conference or a youth event. Students are getting scholarships and going for exchange programmes.
People are including youth in different activities and society has become more inclusive for the youth as compared to the
olden days. So, I would say that in my student life, it was not easy for students to go out for any activity and those who used
to go were considered as lucky ones.

Roshni: Sir what are your views about extracurricular activities and do you think these extra academic activities play any
significant role in student life?

Kazim: Extracurricular activities are very important, and I am

personally a very shy person and I have always remained
timid but If I had not started participating in extracurricular
activities probably, I would have never been successful as
I’m today and would have remained a shy person for life. It
was because of these activities that build confidence and
interpersonal skills in me. Extracurricular activities provide
you exposure and experience, there are so many by-
products of it which you can’t get while having traditional
classroom learning. Moreover, it helps you relax your mind,
it helps to get experience and obviously you socialize more
than you get to know many people and many people get to
know you too through this sort of activities which, again, is a
bonus point.

Roshni: Considering your deep association and affection, and the

time you spent in STAGS, who was the most supportive to you and from
whom you learned a lot?

Kazim: To be honest, I learned a lot from three people, when I was working in STAGS. We were really lucky to have Mr. Mazhar
ul haq Siddique as our Vice Chancellor, he was very supportive to the students as well as to the faculty. At that time, we used
to have Madam Hanifa Qazi, she was also very active with the youth and was very helpful. Moreover, Mr jawed Larik; we used
to call him Bhaijaan and even today people know him in STAGS as ‘Bhai jan’ because of his supportive nature. He was working
as an assistant at that time and helped me immensely in office work. Personally, they helped me a lot to work in STAGS as it
was my first job, I learned a lot of things and during that time almost all the members who were associated with stags are
now very successful persons in their own fields.

Roshni: Sir as you have spent so many years working with the youth and engaging them in
different productive activities, what do you think about today’s youth and what message
would you like to give them?

Kazim: In my opinion, today’s youth has got way more opportunities than we used
to have. Nowadays everything is easier, in a sense, that it is easily available and
accessible and you can get it in a very short time. You can get a lot of infor-mation
through the Internet and through different media. There are lots of opportunities and
floors of information, things have become way easier but, at the same time, I see
one thing very common among the youth of today that is the habit of com-plaining.
We didn’t have it or maybe we knew it that there would be no use of complaining
either. Students, nowadays, com-plain that university does not provide facilities, they
will complain about not having this or that facility but, for us, we used to count on the
facilities that university was providing rather than counting on which wasn’t given to
us. For us, going to the Cen-tral Library and sitting in the air-conditioned room was a
blessing. However, I would say that due to opportunities, accessibility and information
flow, students have become very much creative and self-dependent. If one message
that I would like to deliv-er to the youth is to be focused. With so many open doors,
opportunities and information you might have many options to choose from. Choose
options wisely and be focused on your goal. I always say this while addressing the
youth that whatever you do today is going to be doubled in the future. If you do hard
work today, that will pay you off twice in the future and if you would leave work today
on tomorrow so you’ll have to put double efforts to do it in the future.

Roshni: Many thanks for your time and insightful talk.

MINUTES WITH
MR. FAIZ ALAM
Kashmala Azhar
Knowing people is actually really good, because it helps us in discovering new
facts about life and it develops a sense of under-standing about different things it
somehow alters your way of seeing this world, and the best way to know someone
is to in-terview them.

So today we have such a personality who is not only an inspiration for many but
we can also a source of learning for us. So without wasting our time anymore let’s
just get to know about Mr. Faiz Alam (a former student of University of Sindh).

Kashmala: Aslam-o alikum Mr. Faiz, how are you? First of all thank you so much
for giving your time.

Faiz: walikum asalam I’m alhumdulilah fine and its actually nice of you guys to
remember me in this regard. I’m deeply obliged.

Kashmala: We should remember good things and nice people. Kindly Sir tell us
a little about which department and batch of Univer-sity of Sindh you are from?

Faiz: I’m a former student of university of Sindh as you know, and I was from batch
2013 in the Institute of Business Ad-ministration (IBA) and I passed out in 2016 after
the completion of my BBA degree.

Kashmala: Oh that’s great! Sir I’ve heard that you were an active member of Bureau of
STAGS ,so sir our readers would love to know about your experiences, kindly share with us your
contributions as well.

Faiz: STAGS was more like a family to us and most of us was used to consider STAGS as our actual department for which
we were enrolled for and as far as participation in Bureau of STAGS is
concerned so most of my work was outside the university as I was
used to participate in national level declamation contests and I had
established a criteria for myself that my declamation would only
be humorous and it is only going to be in English although I was
forced many times, by my co-workers and friends to try other
categories of declamation like Urdu serious and others but I
never did that. I still remember that first time I gave trials for
a contest which was going to be held in Faisalabad and
I fortunately got selected and the topic was “ Oops i did
it again” and at that time I ranked between the top four
speakers of Pakistan in the initial round and this was a
huge contest no doubt.

Kashmala: The feeling of victory and achieving something

is just not easy to forget and it actually lingers in our mind
for a long peri-od of time and there are always individuals
in everyone’s life associated with those memories of
achievements. Would you like to mention some of those
people?

Faiz: Yea sure actually I’d love to mention Jawed Bhai Jan here. Who was used to be there for me to correct me whenever I
was going wrong. He was a mentor for all of us. And I would say that he was simply a magician who could guide us in almost
all fields.

Kashmala: that’s pretty awesome! Well sir what do you feel that what is the best thing about University of Sindh?

39
Faiz: Best thing about University of Sindh is that it not only polishes your academic abilities but it
teaches you so many other things because the experience of studying in such a huge campus
is great in itself as It develops a sense of responsibility in a student and make him/her realize
that now he/she is actually grown up and honestly I’ve learned a lot from university of
Sindh who ever I am and whatever I am is just because of university of Sindh.

Kashmala: okay so sir now we’ve talked so much about past let’s just come back to
present and talk about your current designation means what job you are currently
doing?

Faiz: Well currently I’m a lecturer at Institute of Cost Management Accounting (ICMA)
Pakistan and I teach Business Communication Report Writing to undergraduate
students other than that I’m an O-level and A-level instructor and also I have an
institute of my own in Hyderabad named as aptitude.

Kashmala: sir let’s just again look into the past. Kindly sir share with us that what have
you learned from university life?

Faiz: University life is all about discoveries, you discover different colours of life, you
discover new people, new strate-gies and a lot more. You learn about behaviuor you
learn about people it teaches you to move on and not to stop.

Kashmala: Okay sir so now I have an opinion based question that if you are given a chance to change one thing about
education system what would that be?

Faiz: Well first thing first is that we have to understand the philosophy of change. Change doesn’t mean that a thing is bad
and we want to make it good, it just simply means that its already good but we want to make it better by including some
points and excluding some points. We just want to improve it. Now as for as change in education system is concerned
so I would say that we need to promote practical learning and co-curricular a bit more as books are not everything and
cramming is not the only way to learn, here I would like to add few lines of poetry

‫زندگیکیاہےکتابوںکوہٹاکردیکھو۔‬،‫دھوپمیںنکلوگھٹاؤںمیںنہاکردیکھو‬
Life is not a fantasy it isn’t based on syllabus its always out of syllabus

Kashmala: No doubt sir so true... what would you like to say about online learning is it good? Should we adopt this in future
as well?

Faiz: yea this is good for now but in future I would say that learning somehow requires a physical input so we can’t com-
pletely depend on it in future.

Kashmala: A controversial question it is..! but any favourite teacher in University life?

Faiz: (Lauhter) you are saying it controversial and still asking it . Well Mr. Abdul Sattar Shah was one of my favourite as I
learned politeness and humbleness from him and here I would also mention Mr. Javed Bhaijan from the Bureau of STAGS as
I learned so much from him too.

Kashmala: As you mentioned earlier that you are a teacher so what’s your message to those students who are still stuck
between medical and engineering?

Faiz: I would say that kindly think on a wider scope. While choosing your career focus on the up-coming 10 years instead of
focusing on past 10 years and also give importance to your aptitude that what you are fit for.

Kashmala: Sir being a Sindh University student I know that anyone from Sindh University can speak more than 1 language so
how many languages can you speak?

Faiz: I can speak Sindhi Urdu Punjabi and English along with that a little bit Persian as well

Kashmala: last but not least a message for those students who chose your department as their field of study.

Faiz: I would share what my father says to me most of the time that “Do justice with your work and make it remarkable” so no
matter what so ever your field is work hard and for those who choose IBA I would say the same to them as well.

Kashmala: The best gift you can give someone is actually your time so thank you so much sir for your precious time I’m
honoured to be your interviewer.
