ABOUT ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

1. What does an engineering department in an

organisation do?
-The Engineering Department provides
technical, engineering, surveying and hands
on support on capital improvement projects
ranging from concept development through
engineering design, project management and
construction inspections as authorized and
funded by the Township Committee.

2 They also manufacture spares for the machine

using lathe machine and many other machines

3 They also help in designing the new and

innovative ways to do a work and parts for a
machine with the help of a computer software
namely {AUTO CAD}

16
LATHE MACHINE
WHAT IS IT USED FOR?
-A lathe is a machining tool that is used primarily
for shaping metal or wood. It works by rotating the
workpiece around a stationary cutting tool. The
main use is to remove unwanted parts of the
material, leaving behind a nicely shaped
workpiece.

PARTS OF LATHE
-The main parts of a lathe are the bed, headstock,
tailstock, spindles, toolrest, and motor.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

-The Bed Holds It All Together
All parts of the lathe are attached to the bed. This
forms the base of the lathe and is one of the factors
that determine the size of the piece. That is, the
distance from the main spindle to the bed will tell
you the maximum diameter limit.
17
Proper Orientation
The headstock should be on the left, and the
tailstock should be on the right. If you're seeing the
opposite, check and make sure you're not standing
on the wrong side of the lathe.
The headstock is where the main action happens.
This is where the power of the motor is applied to
the workpiece. Part of its purpose it to hold the
main spindle, so you should see this spindle here
as well.
The motor can be found on the underside of the
lathe bed, on the left near the headstock. It is often
some type of electric motor, but a lathe can have a
hydraulic motor as well.

Adjustable Parts
You can adjust the toolrest for height and rotation,
but for safety reasons, you should only do this
when the machine is off. Once you loosen it to
adjust, double-check to make sure it's tightened
again before continuing.

18
The tailstock is also adjustable, and you'll likely be
able to remove it entirely. Just like with the
toolrest, you should never make these adjustments
when the lathe is in operation. There's more on this
in the Lathe Safety section of this post.
Attachments and Accessories
The spindles, including the rotating main spindle
that holds the workpiece, can be outfitted with
different attachments and accessories. To allow for
these fittings, the main spindle is often hollow and
threaded on the outside.

DIFFERENT TOOLS/ MACHINES USED
1 Broaching machine
2 Drill press
3 Gear shaper
4 Hobbing machine
5 Hone
6 Screw machines
7 Milling machine
8 Shear (sheet metal)
9 Shaper
10 Band saw
11 Planer
12 Stewart platform mills
13 Grinding machines

20
1 Broaching is a machining
process that uses a toothed tool, called a broach, to
remove material

2 A drill press (also known as a

pedestal drill, pillar drill, or bench drill) is a style
of drill that may be mounted on a stand or bolted
to the floor or workbench.
3 A gear shaper is a machine tool for cutting the
teeth of internal or external gears, it is a
specialised application of the more general shaper
machine

4 Hobbing is a machining
process for gear cutting, cutting splines, and
cutting sprockets on a hobbing machine, which is a
special type of milling machine.
5 Honing is an abrasive
machining process that produces a precision
surface on a metal workpiece by scrubbing an
abrasive grinding stone or grinding wheel against
it along a controlled path.

A shaper is a type of
machine tool that uses linear relative motion
between the workpiece and a single-point cutting
tool to machine a linear toolpath

22
Milling is the process of
machining using rotary cutters to remove material
by advancing a cutter into a workpiece.

MOTIVE OF ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

Engineering department in An organization is

described. The four basic functions of the
department are discussed; namely, custom
engineering, sales assistance, production
assistance, and new product design. The role of
committees in carrying out interdepartment liaison
is presented, and the specific working committees
and their functions are described. Comments are
presented on Management's problems in the areas
of 1) providing necessary technical skills, 2)
budgetary control of manpower, as required for
custom engineering on fixed price-contracts and
new product development, and 3) intradepartment
organization versus integration of the department
into the over-all company organization.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, it was very beneficial internship
for me because I learned how a factory survive
and carry on working all the time. I witness
the process and all the steps of the working
path in a manufacturing company. I gained
knowledge about yarn based company , basic
working principles of manufacturing lines and
working condition of a MECHANICAL
ENGINEER in engineering department
Additionally , I learned working principles of
many machine used in manufacturing line
with some details and tricks. I realise the basic
idea of an Engineering department is to
provide new innovative design and to
manufacture basic spares for the machines and
this department holds a very important
position in any organization as without it the
organisation has to spend their money on
purchasing the spares.
