BOOK EXTENSION ACTIVITY - LESSON PLAN

1. Pre-K/ CCSD K-2nd Grade/Nevada Core Standards:


● 6.K.TW.7 With assistance, draw and/or write personal messages.

2. Objectives:
● Students will be able to use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose
opinion pieces in which they tell a reader the topic or the name of the book they are
writing about and state an opinion or preference about the topic or book.

3. Materials/Equipment:
● Crayons cut outs (red, yellow, blue, pink, green, etc.)
● Dear Crayon letter format
● Crayons
● Pencils
● Glue

4. Teaching:
A. Plan for reading the book
● Teacher will read the title of the book, author, and illustrator
● After reding the title, the teacher will ask the students what their predictions are o what
the book is going to be about.
● Once students have said their predictions, the teacher will continue forward and begin
reading the book.
● Throughout the book, and after reading certain crayons letter, the teacher will ask the
students why they believe the crayons feel the way they are saying in the letter.
● This will continue for every other crayon
● After finished the book the teacher will ask the students to think of their favorite color
crayon and ask them how they would feel if their crayon sent them a letter.
● Students will be directed to their seats to begin the activity
B. Plan for extension activity:
● Students will have a choice to chose between any favorite color crayon cut out the is
provided by the teacher (color crayon cut out include; red, blue, yellow, pink, orange,
black, white, brown, purple, green)
● Once students have chosen their favorite color crayon out of the bunch, they will then be
provided with the dear (crayon color) letter format
● Students will be instructed to:
o Write their favorite color next to the word “dear ________”
▪ Ex: “Dear Yellow,”
o Write why the color is their favorite
o Write one thing they draw with the color
▪ Ex: Dear Red, you are my favorite color! With your color I can draw
apples! Love, (name)”
● Below the lines where to write the letter students will also be instructed to draw
something using their crayons (yellow-sun, grey-clouds, pink-pig)
● Once students have finished their letter and their drawings, they will be able to glue their
letter onto their crayon cut out.

5. Closure:
● Once the students are finished writing, drawing, and gluing their activity
together students will have the option to present their activity to the class
● If students do present, they will read their letter and describe the picture that
they drew.
● Once students read out loud, the teacher will show how they wrote a letter
like the crayons.
● Express how they are able to express their personal messages through letters
