1) Consider the Metro Ethernet point-to-point optical networks topology with attenuation
constant, transmitter power (Pt) and receiver sensitivity (Pr) from ingress Node KLCC to egress
Node Cyberport as illustrate in Figure 1. The core network employed Routing Wavelength
Assignment (RWA) with Fixed Adaptive Routing by utilized shortest path algorithm. Assume
a 10 dB power margin for losses in connectors.
(i) Design the maximum length and shortest length of the optical link from ingress to egress,
assuming that there are no amplifiers. (maximum and minimum insteaded of maximum and
shortest)
(10 Marks)
(ii) If the link operates at a rate of 40 Gbps and an average dispersion limit of 1400 Gbpskm.
Formulate the maximum length of the optical links from ingress to egress.

2) Consider a Passive Optical Networks (PON) which has 720 Optical Network Units (ONU). Let
the transmission power of the Optical Line Terminal (OLT) transceiver be 0.09mW, and the
receiver be able to detect signals of at least 0.0009mW for a reasonable Bit Error Rate. Assume
that the splitter is 10% lossy. The optical fibre has an attenuation of 0.25dB/km. Identify the
maximum possible distance of an ONU from OLT. Determine what is the Round
Trip Time (RTT) corresponding to this distance
