Methodology:
i. Visiting of settlements in the lake basin, i.e Jeli town and nearby villages (under
Lembaga Kemajuan Kelantan Selatan – KESEDAR) to identify offices/bodies/personnels
that keep population data and political situation of the place, such as the district office.
(May-June 2013; 2 month)
ii. Collecting primary and secondary data on socioeconomics and political situation
of the lake basin. Data will be gathered from the district offices in Jeli and KESEDAR,

existing research reports, papers and journals, and interviews with identified local
people/ village leaders (July – September 2013, 3 months)

1.0 Introduction
1.1 From In June 2013-Ogos 2013, the collection of data on socioeconomic characteristics of
population living in Pergau Lake basin have been conducted. Potential offices /agencies/
persons had been visited, and interviewed and identified.
2.0 Objective
3.1 The scope of this work is to gather data/information on socioeconomics of the population,
which include population dynamics, education, culture and economic activities/occupation of
the population.
The study covers area surrounding Pergau Lake Basin, which is Jajahan Jeli. Jajahan Jeli consists
of three (3) districts, namely Daerah Jeli, Daerah Batu Melintang and Daerah Kuala Balah, with
total areas of 128,020.56 hectars land (Table 1). This made Jajahan Jeli the third largest area in
Kelantan.

5.1 Table 5.1 shows the population of Jajahan Jeli from 2010 to 2012. It shows the increase of
population from 39,170 in 2010 to 42,672 in 2012, with the increase of 8.2 percent in two
years’ time.
5.2 Table 5.2, 5.3 and 5.4 shows the number of population according to gender for Daerah
Jeli, Daerah Batu Melintang and Daerah Kuala Balah respectively in the year 2010, 2011 and
2012.

2.1 According to population and socioeconomic survey conducted by Jeli Land and District
office in 2012, population in Jeli District has increased to 42672 in 2012. This contribute
to 2.23% of Negeri Kelantan population.
2.2 . The majority are the Malays, 98.2%. The other races are minority, which include
Orang Asli 1.2%, Chinese 0.3%, Indian 0.2% and 0.1% are other ethnic groups.

According to the Head Teacher one of the SMK, the result of SPM in Jeli schools are considered
good. For example, in his school, 59 students pursue education to form six, 8 to Polytechnics, 3
to matriculations and 4 to higher education institutions.

Jeli has considerably good health centre, with one district hospital (Hospital Jeli), 1 rural clinic
(Klinik desa) in Batu Melintang and one in Gunong. In Kuala Balah there is two rural clinics, that
are Klinik Desa Kuala Balah and Klinik Desa Lubok Bongor.
The majority of population in Jeli involved in agricultural sector, particularly as farmers and
rubber tappers. A small number of population works in government sectors, private sectors,
and some of them are operating are operating small businesses such as operating grocery
stores and food stalls. They also sell fruits in individual stalls, herding animals such as buffalo.
Remark: This is only some of the data. The research is progressing well.
