• India's wholesale inflation hit a record high of 12.94 per cent in May from
10.49 per cent in April due to low base and a continued rise in fuel and
commodity prices, data released by the government showed.

• Wholesale inflation came in at (-) 3.37 per cent in May 2020, on account of
implementation of a stringent nationwide lockdown.

• Wholesale inflation rate, measured by wholesale price index (WPI), has


been on a rise over the last six months. The latest inflation rate released
by the government is the highest under the current series available from
2013.

• According to data released by the Commerce and Industry Ministry on
Monday, food prices rose to 4.31 per cent in May. Fuel and power
inflation stood at 37.61 per cent led by higher petrol and diesel prices.
The price rise in manufacturing products that accounts for close to
two-third of the index, was 10.83 per cent.

• Rising prices of edible oils and protein rich items pushed the retail inflation to
a six-month high of 6.3 per cent in May, breaching the comfort level of the
Reserve Bank and thus rendering reduction in interest rates a difficult
proposition in the near term.

• The government has asked the Reserve Bank to keep the retail inflation at 4
per cent with a margin of 2 per cent on either side.

• CPI inflation has breached the upper band of the inflation target about 10
times since the first meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), which
decides the key interest rate, in October 2016.

• As per the data on CPI, factored in by the RBI while arriving at its monetary
policy, the steepest price rise was witnessed in the ‘oils and fat’ segment,
which on an annual basis showed an increase of 30.84 per cent.

• The May CPI data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) further
revealed that the rate of price rise in ‘meat and fish’, ‘egg’, ‘fruits’, and ‘pulses
and products’ stood at 9.03 per cent, 15.16 per cent, 11.98 per cent, and 9.39
per cent, respectively.

• The rate of price rise in the ‘fuel and light’ category quickened to 11.58 per
cent.

• Naftali Bennett was sworn in as Israel's new Prime Minister, ousting Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from power after an uninterrupted 12 years
at the helm of affairs.

• Bennett, the 49-year-old leader of the right-wing Yamina party, took oath
of office after parliament (Knesset) voted on Sunday on the new
government led by him. The new government has 27 ministers, nine of
them women.

• The new government - an unprecedented coalition of ideologically


divergent political parties drawn from the Right, the Left and the Centre,
along with an Arab party - has a razor-thin majority in a 120-member
house.

• Sterling and Wilson Solar Limited (SWSL), part of the Shapoorji Pallonji group,
has announced the appointment of Amit Jain as global chief executive officer.
He succeeds Bikesh Ogra, who relinquished the position on May 31, 2021.

• Ogra would continue as a director on the company's board. Jain has been
with Sterling and Wilson solar Limited since January 2019 as the country head
for the United States and Australia which are now key markets for the
company.

• Jain would take over the global operations of the company and report to the
board of directors. He would now be responsible for business development,
market growth and the P&L for SWSL that has its operations across more than
25 countries.

• The Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) has reduced the penalty levied
on CARE Ratings by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi)
from Rs 1 crore to Rs 10 lakh. The tribunal, however, has affirmed the
order pertaining to lapses in assigning credit rating of Reliance
Communications (RCom) debentures.

• Care had moved SAT against Sebi’s order dated July 24, 2020, imposing a
monetary penalty of Rs 1 crore, for violating Regulation 15(1) and
Clauses 3 and 8 of the Code of Conduct for Credit Rating Agencies under
the SEBI (Credit Rating Agencies) Regulations, 1999.

• The COVID-19 pandemic has upended giving trends across the world as
several western economies have slipped down the Index due to COVID
lockdowns, as per the World Giving Index (WGI) 2021.

• Released by the Charities Aid Foundation’s (CAF), this year’s survey


highlights the impact of lockdowns on charitable giving, as the USA,
Canada, Ireland, the UK, and the Netherlands -- all fell out of the highest
rankings.

• India is now in the Top 20 most generous countries in the world, at 14. This
is up from the 10-year global rank of 82. Only Australia and New Zealand,
where the survey was undertaken in the weeks before the first wave of
the pandemic took hold, maintained their top 10 rankings.

• Chief minister BS yediyurappa announced a compensation scheme aimed at
helping poor families that have lost earning members to COVID-19.

• As extension of the economic relief package announced in two parts so far by


the Karnataka government, Rs 1 lakh will be given as compensation to bpl card
holding families who have lost an adult earning member to covid-19. The
scheme will, however, be limited to one person per family.

• The scheme is estimated to cost Rs 200-300 crores in addition to the already


announced economic relief package worth Rs 1850 crores.

• Malaria No More, a non-governmental organisation, in collaboration with the


India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Council of Medical
Research (ICMR) is creating an India Interagency Expert Committee on Malaria
and Climate (IEC) to explore and advance climate-based solutions for
accelerating malaria elimination in India.

• The IEC will focus on improving models like the one 'Malaria No More'
developed in Odisha state, which uses a multi-stakeholder and interdisciplinary
approach to identify and prioritise areas of scalable and sustainable impact to
improve malaria control and prevention.

• The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) imposed a


cumulative penalty of over Rs 15 crore on top officials of Franklin
Templeton Mutual Fund (FT MF) and its trustee for violation of Sebi regulations
while managing the six schemes wound up last year.

• The regulator imposed Rs 3 crore penalty on FT Trustees Services and Rs 2 crore


each on chief executive officer (CEO) Sanjay Sapre and chief investment officer
(CIO) Santosh Kamath.

• Five other fund managers were levied a fine of Rs 1.5 crore each and chief
compliance officer was asked to pay Rs 50 lakh.

due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
