• Wholesale inflation came in at (-) 3.37 per cent in May 2020, on account of
implementation of a stringent nationwide lockdown.
• The government has asked the Reserve Bank to keep the retail inflation at 4
per cent with a margin of 2 per cent on either side.
• CPI inflation has breached the upper band of the inflation target about 10
times since the first meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), which
decides the key interest rate, in October 2016.

RETAIL INFLATION HITS 6-MONTH HIGH OF 6.3 PC IN MAY ON COSTLIER FOOD, FUEL
• As per the data on CPI, factored in by the RBI while arriving at its monetary
policy, the steepest price rise was witnessed in the ‘oils and fat’ segment,
which on an annual basis showed an increase of 30.84 per cent.
• The May CPI data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) further
revealed that the rate of price rise in ‘meat and fish’, ‘egg’, ‘fruits’, and ‘pulses
and products’ stood at 9.03 per cent, 15.16 per cent, 11.98 per cent, and 9.39
per cent, respectively.
• The rate of price rise in the ‘fuel and light’ category quickened to 11.58 per
cent.

• Naftali Bennett was sworn in as Israel's new Prime Minister, ousting Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from power after an uninterrupted 12 years
at the helm of affairs.
• Bennett, the 49-year-old leader of the right-wing Yamina party, took oath
of office after parliament (Knesset) voted on Sunday on the new
government led by him. The new government has 27 ministers, nine of
them women.
• Sterling and Wilson Solar Limited (SWSL), part of the Shapoorji Pallonji group,
has announced the appointment of Amit Jain as global chief executive officer.
He succeeds Bikesh Ogra, who relinquished the position on May 31, 2021.
• Ogra would continue as a director on the company's board. Jain has been
with Sterling and Wilson solar Limited since January 2019 as the country head
for the United States and Australia which are now key markets for the
company.
• Jain would take over the global operations of the company and report to the
board of directors. He would now be responsible for business development,
market growth and the P&L for SWSL that has its operations across more than
25 countries.

• The Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) has reduced the penalty levied
on CARE Ratings by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi)
from Rs 1 crore to Rs 10 lakh. The tribunal, however, has affirmed the
order pertaining to lapses in assigning credit rating of Reliance
Communications (RCom) debentures.
• Care had moved SAT against Sebi’s order dated July 24, 2020, imposing a
monetary penalty of Rs 1 crore, for violating Regulation 15(1) and
Clauses 3 and 8 of the Code of Conduct for Credit Rating Agencies under
the SEBI (Credit Rating Agencies) Regulations, 1999.

• The COVID-19 pandemic has upended giving trends across the world as
several western economies have slipped down the Index due to COVID
lockdowns, as per the World Giving Index (WGI) 2021.
• India is now in the Top 20 most generous countries in the world, at 14. This
is up from the 10-year global rank of 82. Only Australia and New Zealand,
where the survey was undertaken in the weeks before the first wave of
the pandemic took hold, maintained their top 10 rankings.
