• How to read phrases and sentences with linking sounds.
• How to make your speaking more natural and fluent.

I. Warm-up

Find as many ‘food’ words as you can in the two lines below.
One of the ‘food’ words has been circled for you.

The ‘food’ words can be categorized into three types by their endings:

Read the words and pay special attention to the ending sounds.

II. Linking Sounds 5 minutes

In English, the last letter of one word often joins onto the next word.
This is called linking sound. Let’s look at an example.

Chocolate milk is very tasty.


You can read it as: Chocolate mil kis very tasty.

This is because the final ‘k’ sound of milk joins with the vowel ‘i’ in is. This
is a common feature of spoken English. If one word ends in a consonant (辅
音) and the next word begins with a vowel (元音), the consonant (辅音)
links onto the vowel (元音) of the next word.

Other examples: A soft drink is unhealthy.


I eat a carrot every day.
People often eat dumplings for breakfast in China.

Listen to the following sentences and discuss with your tutor:

Repeat the sentences with your tutor and make sure that you
pronounce all the linking sounds correctly.

Watch out! You don’t need to make every possible


The speaker in the linking sound in a sentence. Linking
recording doesn’t make sounds are not a must in English
every possible linking Speaking, but it can help to make your
sound! Why is that? speaking more natural and fluent.
