We at VAK are blessed to bring out the second volume in the series
of books on Anecdotes on Vishnu Sahasranama authored by Sri V
S Karunakaran Swamy.
Sri V S Karunakaran Swamy started this mammoth never before project
of explaining the significance of the 1000 names. Since the English
meaning of this hymn is given in this work, many in this country and
those living abroad, will welcome it. Every name is a mantra by itself,
some with two and some ranging up to eight words. The hymn is an
antidote for all ills.
As the author mentioned the benefits which will accrue by reciting
the various name of Vishnu, it has been practically experienced by
Devotees at Chilkur Balaji temple who are the regular readers of VAK
in which these Anecdotes have been serialised. There is immortal
ecstasy that can be experienced by chanting these names individually.
The second Volume has been released on 6th September 2017, as a part of the Saptatipoorthi
celebrations of the Author Sri V S Karunakaran. You can find the devotees chanting these
names endlessly at the Balaji Temple Chilkur. The benefit of chanting individual names for
particular needs to be granted by Almighty is being practiced and is yielding expected results.

EDITORIAL... - DHARMA and DEITY - INSEPARABLE
In June this year, the presiding deity of Mandaikadu Bhagavathi Amman temple has revealed
that none of the customs and traditions are followed properly by Hindu Religion Charitable Endowment
Dept. ( HR&CE) in Tamil Nadu. The Deity aired these views after the famous temple in Kanyakumari,
Tamil Nadu, met with a fire accident recently. In Deva Prashnam the deity revealed that sampradaya
was not followed diligently and devotees were made to suffer by the HR&CE management.
Deva Prashnam, a form of sacred religious practice or horary, is conducted to know the cause
of accidents, the will of the deity in making important decisions etc. in the temples of Kerala and
Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu. Following the fire accident in Mandaikadu Bhagavathi Amman temple,
Deva Prashnam was conducted in the presence of public representatives and devaswom board members.
During the process of prashnam in which the presiding deity of the temple appears, the deity
revealed that naivedyam was not pure, temple premises aren’t clean and that the vastram put on the
murti were also dirty. The absolute state of neglect shocked everyone when the deity showed that
traditions and customs aren’t followed properly as per Agamas.
She also revealed that a small defect on her murti wasn’t rectified, and she has grown in height, which is
why she indicated by fire that the roof needs to be replaced. The murti is actually a snake nest that continues
to grow.
It was also revealed that the two wells in the temple are in neglect. Amman has directed the
management to open them and only use water from the wells for puja. She has also revealed that
the folk-art forms describing her history that were performed in the temple earlier should be revived.
Amman has noted that the annual festival in the month of Masi (February- March) isn’t being conducted
with fervour. She has directed that the Queen of Thiruvananthapuram palace should be invited to the festival
with silk.
She even pointed out that despite her pointing out many of the flaws in the previous Prashnam,
most of them were not rectified. She said that she is not showing her anger as she is seated as the
presiding deity of the temple in a peaceful form and that the wrong doers won’t be able to handle it
if she showed her true form.
Similar Deva Prashnam was conducted in the year 1990 at Sabarimala and the deity’s opinion
with regard to entry of women into the temple. The deity had categorically revealed that there should
not be any entry of women aged between 10 years and 50 years into the temple. This Deva prashnam
has been recorded in the 1991 Kerala high court judgement which upheld the restriction of women’s
entry into Sabarimala. However, this opinion of the deity was not considered by the 5 judges bench
judgement of 2018 and women of all ages should be allowed as per the judgement
A similar incident happened in Puri last year where a Public Interest litigation was filed to cancel
the annual Rath Yatra in Orissa High court. The Orissa High court dismissed this petition while recording
in the order the elaborate precautionary steps taken by the temple administration and the Government
to prevent the Covid-19 spread.
In June 2020, oblivious to the fact that the High court has dismissed a similar prayer the Supreme
Court had stayed the holding of annual Puri Rath Yatra in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Supreme
court retraced its steps and reversed its earlier order and allowed the Rath Yatra with certain conditions.
This kind of oscillating attitude of the Supreme court without going into the details of the cases is
affecting the sentiments and beliefs of crores of Hindu devotees.
Temple priests call the 2020’s Ratha Yatra a ‘miracle’. “This year, Lord Jagannath himself gave
us signs that he intended to visit the Gundicha temple. First, after the June 18 court order cancelling

We are governed by the Law of Dharma even if we are calling ourselves a Secular State. We

NEWS CM URGED TO CONSTITUTE TTD BOARD WITH DALIT AS CHAIRMAN
Vijayawada : The Andhra Pradesh government was on Saturday urged to scrap the newly appointed Specified
Authority and instead constitute a full-fledged Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams Trust Board with a practicing Hindu
Dalit as the Chairman.
CS Rangarajan, convener of the Temples Protection Movement and hereditary Archaka-cum-trustee of the
Chilkur Balaji temple, said that if a Dalit was appointed as the Chairman of the Board, it will definitely send positive
signals to the marginalised communities who were feeling excluded in the temple system. "The chairman performs
the role of Yajaman who is the 'kartha' of the temple rituals and has more clout than Archakas or Jeeyangars," he said.
Rangarajan said that the action of Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy was required to set aside the
apprehensions of crores of devotees of Balaji who feel that the Specified Authority may toe the line of the Government
and turn a blind eye to any diversion of funds of the TTD for adjusting the fiscal deficit. "We have northing against the
officers who are individually capable of administration, but a full-fledged Trust Board will have sufficient checks and
balances in case of any such eventuality," he said.
Rangarajan recalled that the Specified Authority in 2010 was under undivided Andhra Pradesh government for
a very short term but had officers from other departments. "At that time, to cleanse the administration of the TTD in the
wake several allegations of irregularities, the then government had constituted a Specified Authority with Dr. J.
Satyanarayana, Special Chief Secretary, Medical and Health, as its chairman," he reminded.
Rangarajan said that the other two members of the authority were TTD Executive Officer IYR Krishna Rao and
V. Nagireddy, Managing Director of AP Industrial Development Corporation (APIDC). At that time in 2010, the government
stood by the Cabinet's decision to appoint a Specified Authority in the wake of unprecedented allegations of irregularities
and misappropriation of funds in the TTD caused anguish to devotees and hurt their sentiments. "The Specified
Authority is constituted only in extraordinary circumstances and we as devotees feel that there is no such situation at
present." Rangarajan added.
Parallels cannot be drawn between 2010 and now, as the last time, the Specified Authority was entrusted with
the responsibility to set right the TTD administration, plug loopholes to eliminate malpractices and protect the
sanctity of the Tirumala temple, the abode of Lord Venkateswara which draws lakhs of devotees from across the
