PART 1 - GENERAL

SUMMARY
The scope of work shall include all labor, materials, plant and
equipment, engineering supervision, design, calculation, shop
drawing and everything necessary for design, procurement,
fabrication, delivery to site, offloading, setting out, placing into
position, testing and commissioning of all materials to complete
the elevator works referred to below and as required by the
Drawings and Specification in accordance with the Contract
Documents.

1.01 GENERAL

A. The work of this section is integral with the whole of the


Contract Documents and is not intended to be interpreted outside
that context.

B. Co-ordinate the work of this section with all other sections


related or affected by the work of this section.

1.02 SCOPE OF WORKS

A. General

This specification covers the functional and technical requirements


for supplying and installing all conveying systems complete in
accordance with the requirements of the contract documents, which
shall include, but not be limited to the following.

a. Details in schedules.
b. Details on drawings.
c. Details in bills of quantities.

B. RELATED WORK BY MAIN CONTRACTOR

A. Electric Power of necessary characteristics during


installation of elevators to provide shaft illumination,
operation of required tools, hoisting machines and power for
starting, testing, adjusting and running the elevators.

Elevator contractor to advice with his tender the extent of his


requirements.

C. Cut outs in concrete (rough openings) to accommodate


elevator entrances, (including landings for emergency access
door/s) car
installation and signalization fixtures. Reinforced concrete
slabs constructed at the top of shaft for all elevators.

C. Concrete and steel works required for fire rated and plumb
shafts, machine rooms, secondary levels (if required), and
pits. Elevator shafts will be constructed without projections.

D. Lifting hooks and/or Lifting beams with the required capacity.


Supports to carry all structural reaction, impact and up elevator
loads imposed by the elevator equipment.

E. Temporary protection at the landings and in the elevator shaft to


allow the elevator contractor to work in the shafts whilst the
construction continues above.

F. Masonry and grouting of elevator shaft entrances and landing sills.

G. Waterproofing to keep pits dry.

H. Elevator machine room access door, secondary level access


door (if required) and pit access door (if required) for the elevators.
Doors shall be 2-hour fire- resistive, self-closing, self-locking and

permit the door to be opened from inside without a key.

I. Air Relief Ventilations; Elevator Contractor to provide full details of air


relief vents, size & location (if required) at the time of bid
submission.

J. Permanent heating, ventilation, air conditioning necessary to


keep Machine
Room temperature below 40˚C.

K. Proper electric feeder wires to controllers as determined by


supplier, including necessary mainline switches, circuit
breakers or fuses. Supplementary disconnect switches at remote
locations. Necessary outlets or feeder wires to controllers as
necessary for signal circuit, car lights, car fans, in pit for pit power
socket, and in hoist way for shaft lighting.

L. Containment between the elevator shafts, elevator machine rooms


and elevator remote control panel.

M. Building lightning protection terminal in the elevator machine room


and pit.

N. Installation of electrical power supplies, lighting, socket outlets


smoke detectors and telephone outlets in machine room with
supply power feeders.

O. Volt free contacts in elevator machine rooms as required for the


fire operation from fire alarm panel.

P. Sufficient emergency power to run elevator at full load and full


speed at any power outage.

Q. Access doors, railings, pit ladders, machine room ladders


support for elevator buffers.

R. Supply and fit of all separator beams within the elevator shafts

S. Water proofing of elevator pits, as necessary, after setting of


all pit supporting steel and rail inserts.

T. Elevator Monitoring System wiring to the BMS room.

U. Controller earth protection mats in the machine room

V. Permanent shaft lighting to meet code requirements.

W. All scaffolding (if required) for the purpose of installation and/or


temporary machine rooms for scaffold free installation method.

X. Any adjustment / movement / maintenance of installation


scaffolding or temporary machine rooms

Y. Two (2) sets of individual fire alarm signals to each Elevator Machine
Room. These signals include:

1. Primary Recall Signal, generated by all Building fire alarm


sensors and devices, except those located at the main
lobbies.

2. Alternative Recall Level Signal, from a designated smoke


detector in the main lobby which will initiate recall of the
elevators to the nearest adjacent floor to primary recall
level

RELATED WORK BY ELEVATOR CONTRACTOR

1. Installation task lighting, power cables for hand tools, temporary


works requirement within the shaft.

2. Guide rail fixing and anchor bolts.

3. All metal work associated with the support of all ropes and
diversion frames/pulleys

4. Supply and Installation of pit access ladders.

5. Third party certification and approval from local authorities.

6. Temporary protection of all elevator equipment’s including


landing doors, frames etc., during/after installation till
handover.

1.03 QUALITY ASURANCES

A. Applicable standards and codes: The elevator equipment, material


and installation shall be in compliance with the following relevant
standards and codes.

1. EN81-1 Safety

Features 2. BS 5655

3. JIS/JEC

B. In addition to the above, design, material, fabrication, examination,


testing, inspection, certification, documentation, and operation shall
conform to the following codes, regulations, standards and addenda,
as applicable.

1.04 SUBMITTALS

A. General

1. Manufacturers Data: Prior to the submission of shop


drawings, submit to the Engineer full technical details,
specifications, catalogues etc. for Product approval.

B. Shop Drawings

1. Submit detailed shop drawings drawn to a 1/20 scale for


car enclosure, landing entrance and signal fixture showing
construction, finish etc.

2. Submit layout shop drawings to scale of not less than 1/20


which shall show but not be limited to the following:

a. Guide rail bracket pitch, joining points, guiderail


reactions etc.
b. General layout showing lift well layout, pit, machine
room, hoist way section etc.
C. As-built Drawings

1. At the conclusion of work, prepare and submit As-built


drawings incorporating all changes and alterations made
during the execution of work.

D. Operation and Maintenance Instruction Manuals

1. At the time of submitting As-built Drawings, provide the


engineer with three copies of Operation and Maintenance
Manuals.

2. Prior to final completion of work, provide three (3) sets of


Manufacturer's Maintenance and Operating Manuals. Manuals
shall have sufficient detail regarding all equipment
components to allow the Owner to undertake equipment
maintenance should he so desire. Manuals shall contain,
as a minimum, the following information:

1. Description of system's method of operation and


control including, but not restricted to, control system
and special or non-standard features provided.
2. Replacement parts list.
3. Lubrication task and frequency chart.
4. Information on each piece of equipment shall be assembled
in the following order: Equipment details such as:
a. Approved shop drawings
b. Model, part and serial number
c. Results of tests and calculations performed, including
final inspection checklists and performance times and
records.

E. Staff Qualifications.

1. A staff organization chart with details of experience and


qualifications of all engineers and foremen proposed for the
project should be submitted for Engineer’s approval.

F. Complete and submit the following schedules detailing the product


data for all Car Elevators

1.05 CLIMATIC / ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

A. All equipment and materials used in the elevator installation work


shall be so designed and constructed that they shall provide
satisfactory service for prolonged and continuous periods in the
climatic conditions of Kuwait.

1.06 TESTING AND COMMISSIONING

A. On completion of installation work perform trial tests and correct,


adjust, calibrate, balance, regulate, etc., the installation as
necessary until the specified and required performance
conditions are obtained.

B. On completion of the entire elevator’s installation work notify the


Engineer’s Representative, in writing, that the completed elevator
work is ready for inspection. Before doing so, perform initial trial
tests and correct, adjust, calibrate, balance, regulate, etc., the
installation as necessary until the specified and required
performance conditions are obtained.

C. Supply all labour, materials, instruments, tools and equipment


required for carrying out the tests.

D. After the connection of permanent power supply, commission all


parts of the elevator installations covered by this specification and
demonstrate to the Engineer that the entire elevator installations
are in perfect working order.

E. Submit to the Engineer test reports, which shall include all records
of test procedures, readings and results obtained.

F. After the connection of the permanent power supply, commission all


parts of the elevator installations covered by this Specification and
demonstrate to the Engineer’s Representative that the entire elevator
installations are in perfect working order and performs as specified.
Repeat the test on power connection from generator as directed by
Engineer’s Representative.

G. Provide the services of a specialist from the manufacturer and or


approved technical representative who shall be present at the
time of testing and commissioning of the Elevator Systems. Include
for all expenses incurred in this respect as no claim for additional
payment will be entertained.
H. Submit to the Engineer’s Representative test reports, which shall
include all records of test procedures, readings and results
obtained.

I. Include all expenses incurred for third party inspection approved by


KFSD for the elevators and related systems and provide certificate
for approval for records.

A. Provide training for 3 persons nominated by the Employer in the


operation and maintenance of the complete conveying system.

1.02 APPROVAL BY PUBLIC AUTHORITIES

A. Ensure that, where applicable, the work and any materials used
in the execution of the work in accordance with the contract,
comply with the requirements of the particular Public Authority
having jurisdiction.

B. Where necessary to comply with the regulations, inform the


Public Authority of the proposed work and obtain from them any
written approval that may be required.

1.03 MAINTENANCE

A. Provide a complete maintenance service throughout the Free


Maintenance Period for all elevators to include making good,
repairing, replacing all defective works and equipment and
leaving the elevators in perfect working order.

B. Provide free Maintenance Services for a period of Two years from the
date of handing over the elevators.

PART -2 PRODUCTS

2.01 EQUIPMENT LOCATION

A. The elevator machines shall be located directly above the hoist way or
MRL As per the elevator architecture drawings.

B. Clearance around the equipment located in each machine room


shall comply with the applicable provisions of governing codes
and local regulations.

C. Where practical, elevator controllers shall be located near the


driving machine. The driving machine shall be visible from its
controller.

2.02 CONTROL CABLES

All control cables shall be as per the factory standard and shall have a core
size of not less than 1.0mm2.

The cables shall be colour coded and clearly distinguishable from mains

cables. Multi-core cables shall be of an approved manufacturer and LSF

sheathed.

2.03 TRAILING FLEXES


A. GEARLESS HOISTING MACHINE

1. The gearless machine shall be designed to meet the continuous


duty of elevator operation. Properly grooved sheaves shall be
driven through a moderate speed motor. The sheaves shall be
mounted with heavy anti- friction bearings on a rigid shaft or
shall be firmly pressed onto a shaft supported by anti-friction
bearings. This machine is a permanent magnet synchronous in
combination with frequency control and low traction gearless
construction, the traction sheaves and the break form an
exceptionally compact power unit

2. The sheaves shall be accurately keyed on the outer shaft of the


motor. The sheaves material shall be of cast hardened steel of the
proper hardness to give minimum wear of the sheaves and hoist

3. A short axial distance between the traction sheaves and the large
spherical roller bearing at the drive end to minimise the shaft
bending moment, the bearing should be provided with a leak-proof

Labyrinth seal and pressure relief pipe for excess grease.

4. The gearless machine should be equipped with DC-operated


double brakes which consist of two independent magnet plungers
directly acting on the brake arms, each arm should be able to
hold the nominal unbalanced load of the lift. A permanent lever is
always provided, as part of the brake mechanism for manual
release of the brake.

4. The brake shall be of mechanically (spring) applied and


electrically released type. The brake shall have sufficient power to
hold the car at any

landing with the normal amount of counter - balancing and with 125 %
contract load.

5. An effective sound reducing material shall be installed


between the bedplate of the driving machine and the machine
supporting bases.

THE MOTOR DRIVE

1. The controller shall utilize a three phase AC motor drive unit


utilizing Variable Voltage Variable Frequency principles to
control the speed of the elevator.

2. The system shall be capable of providing accurate and fast torque


control through the use of a ‘motor model’ which forecasts the
behavior of the AC motor ensuring a stable and highly reliable
motor control near to zero peed. The central element of the
control shall be a computer with minimum 16-bit, 8 MHz
microprocessor designed and manufactured by the lift
manufacturer. The construction of the board shall use fully
electronic interfaces with opt isolators between the computer
and the high voltage signals.

3. The drive shall not cause the motor to create excessive audible
noise. Filters may be used to ensure that audible noise is kept to
acceptable levels.

4. The drive shall have the capability of operating the elevator


when the main AC power drops down to 10% of the rated power.

5. The elevator controller and motor drive unit shall confirm fully
to all European directives, including the following:

a) 95/16/EC - Which is designed to improve the protection of


the health and safety of both elevator passengers and

installation and maintenance engineers. The demands on


the elevator design include prevention of uncontrolled
elevator motion up and overloading, improving accessibility
for the disabled and providing means of permanent
communication with rescue service.

b) 89/336/EEC- Mandatory on electromagnetic compatibility,


covering elevator equipment radiation and immunity
aspects.

c) 89/106/EEC- Recommendation on construction products to


improve energy efficiency, environmental and safety of use,
and to reduce noise, vibrations and fire risks.

7. The driving motor shall have sufficient capacity to operate


continuously at 100 % of contract load and 100 % of contract speed
and for a 10-minute period at 110 % of contract load and 100 % of
contract speed in both directions without overheating.

2.04 CONTROL

A. Variable Voltage Variable Frequency Control:

1. Converts AC Line current to DC using diode converters and


then reconverts to A.C. at the voltage and frequency required
to move a given load at the desired speed. The resulting
precise motor control shall provide precision speed
regulation and smooth acceleration and deceleration
regardless of the load on the car. Latest power device
switching shall be employed to allow switching the high
frequencies involved in the speed control. Latest
microprocessor & semiconductor technology shall be
employed to provide an energy efficient drive system
without an annoying hum.

2. Dual microprocessor units (Master unit & Slave unit) shall


be provided to ensure switching over the control to the slave
unit in the event of the main unit malfunctioning.

3. A digital encoder shall detect accurately the position of the floor


and feed back to the control circuit.

4. The elevator, if stopped due to reasons other than


actuation of safeties or power failure, shall go the nearest floor
in slow speed and shall open the door.

5. An anti-nuisance/mischief prevention feature shall be

included to prevent unnecessary /accidental registration of


car calls.

6. Each elevator shall be provided with a self-levelling feature


that will automatically bring the elevator to the floor
landings within a tolerance of +/-5mm maximum. Self
levelling shall, within its zone, be entirely automatic and
independent of the operating device and shall correct for over
travel and rope stretch. The elevator shall be maintained
approximately level with the landing,

2.05 CONTROLLERS

A. Microcomputer-based control units shall be provided to control


the operation, the starting and the stopping, accelerating and
decelerating the speed of the elevator motor and also to apply the
brake if any of the safety devices operate or the power fails.

B. All controllers shall be enclosed in sheet metal cabinets finished in air


dried enamel. Doors and panels shall be of removable type to provide
easy access to all components and parts housed in the control
panel.

The controller shall house all necessary contactors, relays, switches, cards,
microprocessors, interface modules, power amplifiers, solid state devices, timing
devices, transformers and all apparatus associated with the control of the elevator in
the machine room.

C. The controller shall provide protection against the following:

1. Phase reversal of the power supply.


2. Overload.
3. Single phasing.

D. The control system shall provide a smooth acceleration and


deceleration with the levelling accuracy at all landings, from no load
to full rated load in the elevator. This smooth operation shall be
obtained for all elevators under stable conditions which provide for
"maximum car start to car stop" times for a floor-to-floor run with a
balanced load at the midpoint of the hoist way (start of a door
closing at one floor to the fully opened door position at the next
local floor). Prior to completion of the works and prior to expiry of
the maintenance period, the elevators shall be re-adjusted as
required to meet the approved performance requirements within
10%.

E. The equipment shall be designed to operate at plus or minus 10% of


normal feeder voltage and plus or minus 3% or normal feeder

frequency without damage or interruption of elevator service.

2.06 CAR AND COUNTERWEIGHT GUIDE RAILS

A. Provide steel guide rails with brackets and rail clips for each elevator
car and counterweight, suitably attached to the building structural
members, car guide rails and car frame shall be so located to balance
the car assembly in the guides. Tail brackets shall be suitably
attached to the building structure. Bracket spacing shall be in
accordance with the applicable safety codes listed elsewhere.

B. Rails shall be of steel "TEE" section of standard length with its faces
properly machined to provide a smooth and uniform track for the
moving car and counterweight. Joints of rails shall be accurately
machined with tongues and grooves at the end of the rails at the
center of the railhead and base forming matched joints.

C. All joints shall be so located that fishplates will not interfere


with the relative motion of the rail with respect to the rail clips and
brackets. Car and counterweight rails shall be thoroughly
cleaned and filled smooth throughout their length and at the
rail joints before cars are put in operation.

D. The car and counterweight guide rails shall be provided and aligned
so that the faces of the rails are plumb within plus or minus 6mm,
from top to the

bottom of the hoist way. The maximum change in the Distance Between Guides
(DBG) shall not exceed 6mm.

E. Rail shim packs shall be 19mm. Maximum and shall secure alignment
and shall be so designed that they will remain in position even
though the fastening bolts may become loosened.

2.07 HOIST AND GOVERNOR ROPES.

A. Each elevator shall be provided with hoist ropes of specification


sizes and numbers sufficient to comply with the requirements of
the applicable codes listed elsewhere.

B. The ends of the hoist ropes shall be properly secured to the car
and counterweight crosshead or to the dead-endhitch plates on 2:1
roping, with adjustable rope shackles. Screw adjustment shall permit
equalization of the tension in all ropes.

C. The specification and size of the governor rope for each elevator shall
be as per the requirements of the applicable codes specified
elsewhere. The governor rope shall pass over the governor

sheave and over a tension device at the pit.

D. Tests shall be carried out at the manufacturer's works to ascertain


that the ropes comply with the appropriate code or standard, and
test certificates shall be produced upon request.

2.08 CAR PLATFORMS.

A. The car platform of each elevator shall be of rigid all steel


construction consisting of steel sheet or pan mounted on
structural framing. Alternatively, platform construction shall be
structural steel frame filled with two layers of wood flooring and a
top wood flooring of 19mm. Marine plywood. The underside of the
car platform shall be covered with sheet steel.

B. The platform shall be mounted on rubber isolating cushion pads


between the car and steel car frame.

2.10 COUNTER WEIGHTS

A. Each elevator shall be suitably counterbalanced for smooth and


economical operation. Concrete sub weights shall be contained in a
guided structural steel frame. The counterweight shall be equal to
the weight of complete elevator car plus at least 40% of the
contract load.

2.11 CAR & COUNTER WEIGHT GUIDES

A. uide Shoes

Each elevator shall have four sets of car and counterweight guide
shoes. Each guide shoe shall be made of suitable resilient
material, each fixed inside suitable metal frames. A suitable guide
rail oiler shall be fixed on each guide rail side at the top and bottom
of the car and counterweight.

2.12 BUFFERS:

Provide car and counterweight buffers as per the requirement of applicable


codes mentioned elsewhere in the specifications. Buffers shall be tested
in the works and test certificate shall be produced upon request. Provide
pipe stands, struts, braces or other supports, for buffers.

Each buffer shall be designed for contract speed and fitted with a suitably
cut-out / stop switch arranged to operate the safety circuits in an
emergency.

Spring (Energy accumulation) buffers are to be manufactured from best


quality round to square section steel in helical formation. There must be
no permanent deformation of the buffers when stopping the car or
counterweight with contract load at contract speed.

Oil buffers (Energy dissipation) shall be of the self-resetting type. Provision


shall be made to ensure that there is adequate oil supply in the buffer and
that any oil displaced during operation remains within the buffer.

The buffers shall be securely fixed to the main steelwork and suitably
positioned within the lift pits and should be capable of accepting the
imposed loads the fully laden free fall car or counterweight, with the
buffer stroke returning to normal within the prescribed period.

For lifts having a speed in excess of 1.00m/s the buffers shall be of the
progressive oil type. (Energy dissipation).

2.13 SAFETY DEVICES:

A. Pit safety switch:

1. Provide pit safety switches in all elevator pits. Pit safety


switches shall interrupt the power supply and hold the cars to
permit access to the pits for servicing.

B. Terminal stopping devices.

1. The slow-down, normal and final terminal stopping devices


shall be provided for each elevator at the top and bottom
terminal floors. The devices shall be of the enclosed type and
shall be arranged so that as the elevator approaches either
terminal landing, a roller with
noiseless tread, mounted on a movable arm, will come into contact with cams, and
through operation of the device, bring the elevator automatically to a smooth stop at the
terminal landing. The roller of the device shall engage its full area on the cam surface.

2. The final limit switches shall be operated by a fixed cam


attached to the elevator. The switches shall be so located
that they will be operated should the elevator travel a
predetermined distance above or below the upper or lower
terminal landing. The limit switches shall be independent of
any other stopping devices and shall positively open without
the use of springs to cut off all power from the driving machine
motor and brake. It shall prevent the operation of the
elevator in either direction.

C. Hoist way door unlocking devices.

1. Hoist way door unlocking devices shall be provided for all


elevators on all doors as per the requirement of applicable
codes specified elsewhere. The unlocking device shall
permit access to hoist way using a special key.

D. Electric interlocks and door contacts.

1. The door at each elevator hoist way entrance shall have


door interlocks as required by the applicable codes specified
elsewhere. The unlocking of any hoist way entrance shall
cut the electrical contact of that particular door which shall
prevent the operation of the elevator by cutting the power to
motor.

2. The doors of the elevator cars shall have electrical


contacts conforming to the applicable codes.

E. Emergency exits with contacts.

1. Each elevator shall have emergency exits conforming to


applicable codes specified elsewhere.

2. All emergency exits shall be provided with electric


contacts to prevent the operation of the elevator when the
exit door is open. The exit door shall be easily openable from
on top of the car without using any tools.

2.14 CAR FRAME, SAFETY AND GOVERNOR

A. The car frame shall consist of structural steel members, securely


bolted together and the frame shall be so reinforced and braced as
to relieve the car enclosure from undue strains. The safety shall
be mounted on the bottom members of the car frame and shall
be operated by a speed

governor located over the hoist way. The safety shall stop the elevator
whenever excessive descending speed is attained and means shall be provided to cut off
power from the motor and apply the brake prior to application of the safety. The safety
shall be released by moving the elevator in the upward direction. The safety gear shall be so
designed that it will stop and hold the elevator with full contract load plus 10% in the event
of the lift exceeding 115% of the contract speed in the downward direction.

B. The type of safety and the method of application shall conform


to applicable codes specified elsewhere.

C. The governor rope system, including the governor and tension sheave,
shall be arranged so that the carrier will not release due to system
dynamics when the elevator is subjected to an emergency stop in

the up direction.

D. The governor switch tripping speed and governor tripping speed


shall conform to applicable codes specified elsewhere. The
governor shall be calibrated and sealed at the factory. Factory test
reports shall be furnished upon request.

2.15 CAR TOP CONTROL

An inspection control unit shall be provided and mounted on the car


roof and arranged to operate in the following manner: -

i) The elevator shall be taken out of the automatic operation


control by actuation of an inspection/normal service switch located
on the top of the car.

ii) The elevator will not move unless a directional push and an auxiliary
push are both operated. The pouches shall be sprung loaded, so
requiring continuous pressure to move the elevator.

iii) An emergency stop/run, twist to release, switch shall also be


provided on the roof of the car. This switch shall be colored red and
marked 'PUSH TO STOP'.

iv) A terminal limit switch shall be incorporated in the control to stop


the car when moving in an upward direction, with its roof not less
than 2000mm from the top of the well or lowest overhead
obstruction.

v) A 13 Amp socket outlet, together with a substantially guarded light


fitting, with an ON/OFF switch.

vi) A car door test feature allowing the door operation to function
whatever the position of the car, comprising of a door test/normal
switch and open and close pushes.

An intercom socket outlet shall be mounted on the car roof in a position


avoiding accidental damage, to provide communication directly to an identical socket
mounted on the relevant individual main control panel. 2 No suitable battery powered
handsets complete with a spare set of batteries shall be provided for this communication
system.

2.16 CAR LEVELLING

The lift car shall be provided with a levelling device that will automatically
bring the lift car to the landings within a tolerance of ±5mm.

The levelling system shall, within its zone, be entirely automatic and

independent of the push operating panel. The device shall compensate for
any over-travel or under-travel.

The levelling accuracy shall not be exceeded for any landing in either
direction of travel under a range of conditions from full contract load to
empty car.

2.17 CAR EMERGENCY ALARM AND CONTROLS

An alarm push shall be incorporated in the car control station.

The supply for the emergency alarm system shall be obtained from a
12-volt trickled charged battery located in the machine room,
incorporating automatic voltage regulation.

The Sub-Contractor shall include for wiring from the supply in the machine
room to the lift car.

An audible alarm signal shall be fixed in an approved position above the


ground floor landing entrance within the lift shaft, and on the roof of
the lift car. The emergency signal shall be provided by an approved bell
unit, giving a minimum audible level of 90Dbs, at a distance of 1 metre away
from the ground floor landing entrance doors.

2.18 CAR CONTROL STATION

Inside each lift car there shall be provided a single combined control
station suitable for use by disabled persons which shall incorporate the
following: -

a) A bank of push buttons to correspond to the various landing levels


served.
b) Alarm push button.
c) Door open push button.
d) A key operated car preference switch arranged so that the lift
can be operated by its own car push buttons only, independent of
any landing calls.

All fixings for the buttons, key switches and the front panel of the push
button station shall be vandal resistant, and mounted securely in the main car control
station panel.

The car control station shall be manufactured to a detail approved by the


Client and his representative. Standard Sub-Contractors vandal resistant
fixtures and fittings may be used, but the final arrangement and all
inscriptions shall be to an approved detail.

Pushes shall, in addition to standard identification, incorporate suitable

Braille characters or raised letters or numerals, easily discernible by touch,


for the aid of visually handicapped persons.

Individual pushes shall incorporate illuminated indicators showing when a


call has been registered.

Where a fire fighting elevator is specified in accordance with BS 5588 Part


5, this elevator shall additionally have a speech unit for communication
between the fire fighters’ station at the main floor and the car and
machine room.

2.19 CAR POSITION AND DIRECTION INDICATORS

A flush mounted illuminating LED type position indicator is to be installed,


in the car control station as indicated on the Architects drawing.

Where an indicator faceplate is provided in hairline stainless steel


finish.

2.20 INFRARED PASSENGER DETECTOR (CURTAIN OF LIGHT) IN CAR DOORS.

An infrared sensor will be fitted in the car edge arranged to scan the
area immediately in front of the lift entrance.
Primary door protection shall consist of a two dimensional; multi-beam
array projecting across the car door opening. Under normal operation and
for any door position, the system shall detect as a blockage an opaque object
that is equal to or greater than 33mm in diameter when inserted between
the car doors at vertical positions from within 25mm above the sill to
1800mm above the sill. Under degraded conditions (one or more
blocked or failed beams), the primary protection shall detect opaque
objects that are equal or greater than 100mm in diameter for the same
vertical coverage. If the system performance is degraded to the point that
the 100mm object cannot be detected, the system shall maintain the
doors open or permit closing only under nudging force conditions.

2.21 ELEVATOR LANDING ENTRANCES:

A. General

Each hoist way landing entrance assembly consisting of unit frame, door
panels, sill, hanger, closer, interlock and their installation shall comply with applicable
code requirements and have a fire rating of 11/2 hours.

B. Unit frames.

1. Unit frames shall be of self-supporting type constructed of steel

with dimensions and finishes as detailed in the schedule for


each elevator and as per architectural drawings.

C. Door panels.

1. The door panels shall be of 1.5mm thick mild steel construction


with suitable stiffeners. The bottom of each door panel shall be
provided with a minimum of two removable laminated
phenolic guides, which run in the sill slots. Guide shall be
designed to be replaced without removing door panels.

2. The finishing and dimension of door panels shall be as


detailed in schedules.

D. Sills.
1. Unless otherwise specified, all landing sills shall be made of
extruded aluminum. Grooves shall be machined to give
minimum clearance for the guides. The sills shall be supported
on steel angles which are in turn securely fastened to
building structure.

E. Door hangers.

1. Provide a sheave type two-point suspension hanger and


track complete for each hoist way and car door.

2. Hangers shall be supplied with adjustable rollers to take


the up thrust of doors.

3. Tracks shall be of heavy section with the surface shaped to


conform to the tread of hanger sheaves and rollers. Suitable
means shall be used to transmit motion from one door panel
to the other.

F. Hanger supports.

1. Hanger supports shall be of thick steel sections securely


bolted to strut angles or to building structure.

G. Hanger cover plates.

Hanger cover plates shall be made of sheet steel and shall extend the full
width of door.

I. Toe guards.

1. Toe guards shall be of sheet steel and shall be installed at the

lowest landing. They shall extend to the full width of the door
opening.

2.22 LANDING ARRIVAL GONGS AS PER THE FACTORY STANDARD FOR CAR
ELEVATORS.

Each elevator shall incorporate elevator arrival gongs at each floor which
shall be of the single chime type.

The gongs shall not be visible from the landing lobby areas.

2.23 ELEVATOR CAR AND LANDING DOOR OPERATOR.

A. The doors on the car and each landing shall be opened and closed
quietly and smoothly by an electric AC thyristor type or DC operator
mounted on the car top.

B. Unless otherwise specified in the schedules, all elevators shall be


provided with a protective leading edge, which shall extend the
full height and project beyond the front edge of each leading car
door panel. Should this device touch a person or object while the car
doors are closing, the car and hoist way doors shall return to their
open position.

C. The doors shall be fitted with a minimum of two bottom track sliding
shoes, mounted so they do not require removal of the door when
replaced.

D. The doors on goods lifts shall be collapsible shutter type with leaves
guided on ball or roller bearing top suspension wheels and bottom
guide metal blocks. The leaves shall be nominally 150mm wide
made from zinc protected steel.

E. The car and landing doors shall be operated quietly and smoothly by a
high-performance variable speed, door operator which shall be
mounted on the car frame, independent of the car bodywork. The car
drive unit shall open and close the doors at a speed of not less than
300mm per second. During the course of opening and closing the car
and landing doors shall be solidly locked together to ensure
simultaneous movement. They shall be smoothly cushioned at
both limits of travel by electrical damping.

F. The door operator shall be fully adjustable to ensure optimum


flexibility in setting up acceleration, full speed and de-acceleration
modes. The degree of adjustment shall allow for a factor of 0.75
times to 1.25 times its rated speed.

G. The door operator mechanism shall be quiet in its operation and


shall be mounted directly onto the car sling. Anti-vibration
mounts should be applied where appropriate to totally isolate the
door operator motor and its mechanism from the structural
steelwork of the lift car.

H. The door coupler/pick-up arrangement shall be of a suitable robust


design and manufacture. It shall not be possible for the
coupler/pick-up to strike any equipment in the shaft when the car
is in motion.
2.24 CAR ENCLOSURE
A. Provide car enclosures as detailed below and conforming to all
applicable codes.
B. Car Walls.
1. Car walls shall be in sheet steel, minimum 1.6 mm thick, of
sufficient mechanical strength, finished as detailed in the
schedules of each elevator.
2. Natural ventilation shall be provided by means of perforations
in the base of not greater than 13mm and at the sides of
the ceiling allowing air to pass into and out of the car during
travel through the hoist way. The perforations shall be backed
so as to prevent a rod or other object directly through the
ventilation to touch hoist way equipment.
3. Ventilators shall be provided at the top and bottom of the car,
with suitable metal cowls to ensure circulation of air.
4. The ventilation shall be adequate to cater for the
contingency situation of trapped passengers and shall be
assisted by a mechanical ventilation system within the car.
C. Car roof.

1. Roof shall be constructed of heavy-duty sheet steel of


sufficient mechanical strength conforming to all applicable
codes. The rood of car shall be sufficiently reinforced to
withstand the distributed weight of two men.

2. All elevator car roofs shall have the following accessories and
other features as detailed elsewhere in the specifications.

a. Inspection Lamp.
b. Power Socket.
c. Emergency Stop Switch.

d. Inspection switch.
e. "UP" & "DOWN" button.

3. Provide exhaust blowers, silent in operation, to draw air


into car enclosure for all elevators. A switch shall be
provided in the car operating panel to cut off the fan as and
when required.

4. The mechanical ventilation system, shall be switched off


automatically when no car calls are registered after a pre-
determined period.
D. Emergency lights.

1. Each elevator shall be provided with an emergency light


which will give not less than two hours duration on main
failure. The battery to be rechargeable type.
E. Alarm bell.
1. A push button shall be fitted on the car operating panel of
each car arranged to ring a battery-operated bell mounted on top
of elevator car. Bell, trickle charger, rechargeable battery
and all interconnecting wiring shall be supplied and installed
as a part of this contract.
F. Car Load Weighing Devices.
1. Each elevator shall have a car weighing device to render the
elevator inoperative in case of over loaded car.
2. An audible alarm on top of the car shall sound in case of
an overloaded car.
3. When the car is loaded to its full capacity, a device shall
monitor the situation and bypass all the hall calls registered and
the elevator shall respond to car calls only.
2.25 OPERATIONS
A. Full Collective Selective Control System.

1. The operation of the elevator shall be from the landing buttons


and the car buttons in the car operating device.

2. The operation shall be such that momentary pressure on car


button or landing button other than those for the landing
at which the elevator is standing, shall start the elevator
to stop at the first landing for which a car or landing call is
registered corresponding to

the direction in which the elevator is travelling.


The elevator shall stop at all landings for which
calls are registered and these stops shall be made
in order in which the landings are reached,
irrespective of the sequence in which the calls are
registered, provided the call for a given landing is
registered sufficiently in advance of the arrival of
the elevator at the landing to permit the stop to
be made.

3. If there are no car calls and the elevator starts


UP in response to several DOWN calls, the
elevator shall proceed first to the highest DOWN
call, and then reverse to collect the other DOWN
calls. UP calls shall be collected similarly when
the elevator starts DOWN in response to such
calls. If the elevator without a car call stops for a
landing call and a car call is registered within a
predetermined interval after the stop for a
landing corresponding to the direction the
elevator was travelling, the elevator shall proceed
in the same direction regardless of other landing
calls registered.

4. If DOWN landing buttons are pressed while the


elevator is travelling UP, the elevator shall not stop
at these landings, but these calls shall remain
registered. After the highest car and landing calls
have been answered and the door interlock circuit
is established, the elevator shall reverse
automatically and respond to DOWN car and
landing calls. When travelling DOWN, the
elevator shall not respond to UP landing calls, but
these calls shall remain registered and be answered
on the next UP trip.

B. All elevators shall be connected to the BMS system for


status and alarms.

2.26 BRAKES

Elevator winding machines shall be fitted with an

electromagnetic brake operated by a direct


current solenoid rated for continuous duty.
Each brake shall have not less than 2 No shoes,
which shall be adjustable and removable for
each replacement of the liners. The liners shall
be manufactured from suitable non-metallic
and asbestos free material and shall be non-
combustible and provide sufficient braking
areas to sustain a static load of 125% of the
contract load.

The brake shall be so designed that it cannot be


released in normal operation unless power is
applied to the lift motor. It shall be capable of
bringing the lift car to a standstill under contract
load plus 15% conditions.

A brake release device shall be provided in an


accessible position to enable the brake to be
released manually in an emergency. It shall be so
arranged as to push the brake core inwards
compressing the

springs and lifting the brake. A diagram illustrating this


operation shall be provided and fixed to the wall adjacent to each machine.

2.27 SPECIAL OPERATIONS

A. Fireman’s operations

Fireman’s operations shall be provided for elevators as per


the requirement in the schedules. The operation shall
be as detailed below and as per the requirement of
applicable codes specified elsewhere.

1. A two-position key switch shall be provided adjacent to


the main landing push button station for all the
designated elevators. The key switch shall have
the following positions: ON & OFF.

2. Each elevator designated for firemen service


operation shall have a two-position key switch in
the main car operating panel. The key switch

shall have OFF & ON positions.

3. The elevators designated for fireman’s operation


shall operate from the main landing key switch
when it is changed from the OFF to the ON
position as follows:

a. The elevator shall close its doors if open and


return nonstop to the main landing without
responding to registered car or landing
calls. An elevator travelling away from
the main landing shall stop and reverse its
direction at its next possible landing
without opening its doors.

b. All car and landing buttons shall be rendered


inoperative and all call acknowledging lights
and waiting passenger lanterns shall be
extinguished until the Firemen service
switch at the main landing is turned to the
OFF position.

c. Once the elevator has reached the main


landing, it shall wait as a standby elevator
with its door in the open position until the
Fireman’s switch at the main landing is
turned to the OFF position.

4. The elevators designated for firemen service shall


be operable only from their call buttons by
actuation of the two-position key switch in the
main car operating panel from the OFF
position to the ON positions.

a. Each elevator may be controlled from the


normal car buttons for the landing served
and from the normal DOOR CLOSE button.
This operation shall over ride other
controls and all landing call buttons but
shall be operational only when the

Firemen service switch at the main landing is in


the ON position.

b. Once the Fireman registers the call for


the desired floor, continuous pressure on
the DOOR CLOSE button shall close the
doors and start the elevator. Once the
desired floor is reached the elevator
remains stationary until another similar
operation is made by the fireman.

5. All elevators when on INDEPENDENT or inspection


operation shall be signaled to return to the main
landing when the landing key switch is in the ON
position or the elevator is called by automatic
detection means.

a. The emergency signal shall sound a


distinctive tone, bell or gong located on top
of the car enclosure.

6. All elevators if connected with the automatic fire


monitoring panel shall operate as follows when
receiving a signal from the main fire alarm and
detection system through the relay contacts
provided at the control panel located within
each of the elevator machine rooms.

a. All elevators shall return nonstop to


their main landing without responding to
registered car or landing calls. An elevator
travelling away from the main landing shall
stop and reverse its direction at its next
possible landing without opening its
doors.

b. All car and landing buttons shall be rendered


inoperative and all call acknowledging
lights and waiting passenger lanterns shall
be extinguished until the Fire service mode
is changed by the fire monitoring panel
through the relay contacts.

c. Once the elevator reaches the main landing,

it shall wait as a standby elevator with its


doors in the open position until the Fire
service mode is changed by the fire
monitoring panel through the relay
contacts. The elevator shall return to the
normal operation as soon as the Fire mode is
changed by the fire monitoring panel
through the relay contacts.

2.28 EMERGENCY POWER SUPPLY

A. In the event of power failure and change over to


Emergency Supply, the elevator shall return to the
Ground Floor and thereafter shall remain in operation
by D/G.
Provision shall be made in the elevator control panels and in the
emergency generator control panel to ensure the above operations are
carried out on under Mains Failure connection.

B. Elevator control panels shall contain indicator lights which


advise passengers of the power failure situation and also
the operation under emergency power situation.

C. On restoring of Mains Power, the control panel shall


return all elevators to normal operation.

2.29 APPROVED MANUFACTURERS

A. Manufacturers and installers must demonstrate a record


of at least five (5) years of successful supply and
installation of their products in Kuwait

PART 3- EXECUTION

3.1 GENERAL

Full responsibility for the design, manufacture, installation and


warranty shall rest with a single contracting entity.

A. Co-ordination:

Co-ordinate as required with other trades to assure


adequate provision in the work of those trades for
interface with the work of this section.

3.2 FABRICATION:

All fabrication shall be performed at the factory. Jobsite work


shall be limited to reassembly of equipment, adjustment and
testing.

A. Finishing:

Machine finish all operating parts to standard trade


tolerances, fits and finishes, unless otherwise
specified.

B. Paint preparation:

Thoroughly clean all fabricated steel work, including equipment,


supports and framing prior to painting.

C. Painting:

Two coats of flat black rust inhibiting primer finish shall


be factory applied to appropriate steel surfaces.

D. Inspection:

Final inspection shall be made within two weeks of


notification from the manufacturer/contractor of
completion of the work. Upon satisfactory completion
of final inspection indicating compliance with
specifications and drawings, starting, stopping,
levelling and safety device operation a notice of
completion shall be issued.

After completion elevators shall be tested by

independent authority and a test certificate to be


issued by the Authority.

3.3 INSTALLATION:

A. Install the work of this section in strict accordance with


the original design. The reviewed shop drawings as
approved by the architect/consultant and the pertinent
requirements of government agencies having
jurisdiction.

B. Cutting and patching:

No cutting or patching is permitted by this contractor.


If interference exists, the procedure indicated under site
conditions shall be followed.

C. Touch up:

Matching job site touch up shall be applied to any


areas damaged in transportation and installation.

D. Keep work areas orderly and free from debris during


installation. leave pit broom clean. Leave operating
controls, panels, and signals clean.

E. Electrical Requirements.

Provide insulated wiring to connect all parts of equipment.


Insulated wiring shall have a moisture resisting outer
cover and shall be run in metal conduit or metal trucking
within the elevator machine room. Provide cable trays
within the elevator machine room. All metal trucking and
conduit is to be galvanized steel type. Use of steel
painted trucking is not acceptable. Elevator machine
room trucking to machines and controllers shall be floor
type wherever practical. The trucking shall be galvanized
with mechanically secured cheered plate covers. The
trucking and covers shall be suitable

to withstand the loads imposed. As much as is practical conduit shall be set into the
floor prior to screening.

Vertical trucking within the elevator shaft (except car


top) may be high impact plastic securely fixed to the
shaft wall. Cable support to be provided in vertical
trucking. Horizontal wiring within the elevator shaft to
be in protective tubing or may be double insulated type
securely fastened to the wall. Any wiring that could be
stood on must be enclosed in metal conduit / trucking.

Emergency power, fire alarm, intercom, communication and


security signals wiring will be brought by others to
terminal strips, located on elevator machine room
walls. Provide all necessary wiring and
interconnections between these signals, signal terminal
strips and the elevator controllers

F. Protection:
During the period of installation of the elevator provide
suitable protective barriers, coverings and signs or other
procedures to protect the work from damage and
personnel from injury. When work is completed leave
the elevators locked in a non-hazardous position at the
lowest level served, until approved and responsibility
is transferred to trained staff.

G. Adjustment:

Adjust all controls, switches, guides, safety astragals and


interlocks installed under this section to achieve
specified performance.

H. Staff Instruction:

At the time of examination for final approval, the


manufacturer/contractor supervisor shall instruct the
designated staff personnel in safe operation, servicing,
care and maintenance of all of the equipment.

I. Warranty:

Provide twelve (24) months warranty from date of


substantial completion of all Elevator work and / or

from the date of client acceptance of the equipment


which ever comes later.

Warranty period shall commence on same date for all


units and shall cover defects in equipment and
workmanship provided by this Elevator Contractor.

Warranty shall include prompt remedy of all defects


upon notification from Owner that defects exist.
Remedy shall include labor, materials, equipment and
services required to make good defective areas of Work.
Where defects occur in the case of factory-
fabricated components, Warranty shall cover for
provision of new components at no cost to Owner.
Warranty work shall be undertaken at times
convenient to Owner, and duration of disruption shall
be minimized.

Warranty shall also include making good other building parts,


finishes and other building property, damaged or disturbed in
course of remedying defects at no additional cost to Owner
