HONG KONG DEMOCRACY LEADERS FOUND GUILTY OVER

PEACEFUL 2019 PROTEST
Seven figures including Martin Lee and media tycoon Jimmy Lai convicted
over unauthorised march.
Seven of Hong Kong’s most senior and prominent pro-democracy figures,
including lawyer and former legislator Martin Lee and media tycoon Jimmy Lai,
have been found guilty over their involvement in an unauthorised protest rally.
After a four-week trial, the defendants were convicted on Thursday of
organising and participating in the rally, joining two others who had pled guilty
earlier. They could face up to 10 years in prison though their sentences are likely
to be shorter than that. The defendants included 82-year-old Lee, considered the
father of democracy in Hong Kong, Lai-who is also facing a separate trail over
alleged national security offences, former legislators Margaret Ng and Cyd Ho
Sau-lan, lawyer Albert Ho Chun-yan, veteran activists Lee Cheuk-yan and
‘Long Hair’ Leung Kwok-hung, Former legislators Au-Nok-him and Leung
Yiu-Chung had pleaded guilty earlier. Sentencing will be decided at a later date.
The maximum penalty for each offence is five years. Before the ruling, a small
group of supporters displayed banners outside the West Kowloon court building,
including one that read “oppose political persecution”. Some chanted “five
demands, not one less”, a rallying cry from the protest movement which
includes demands for universal suffrage – a now impossible prospect following
recent changes to the electoral system by Beijing – and amnesty for the
thousands of protesters arrested.

Sept des plus anciennes et influentes figures pro-démocrates, comprenant
l’avocat et ancien législateur Martin Lee et le magnat des médias Jimmy Lai, ont
été reconnus coupables dans leur implication dans le meeting de protestation
non-autorisé. Après un jugement de quatre semaines, les accusés ont été
condamnés ce jeudi pour avoir à la fois participé et organisé la manifestation,
rejoignant ainsi deux autres qui avaient été déclarés coupables auparavant. Ils
pourraient encourir 10 ans de prison bien que leur sentence soit plus courte en
réalité. Les accusés sont composés de Lee, âgé de 82 ans, considéré comme le
père de la démocratie à Hong Kong, Lai qui a un parcours différent aux
présumés délits contre la sécurité nationale, les anciens législateurs Margaret Ng
et Cyd Ho Sau-lan, l’avocat Albert Ho-Chun-Yan, et les militants chevronnés
Lee Cheuk-Yan et « Long Hair » Leung Kwok-hung qui avaient plaidé
coupables auparavant. Les sentences seront prononcées à une date ultérieure. La
peine maximale pour chaque délit est de cinq ans. Avant le jugement, un petit
groupe de partisans brandissait des pancartes à l’extérieur du palais de justice
West Kowloon, et l’on pouvait lire sur l’une d’entre elles «contre la persécution
politique ». Certains chantaient « five demands, not one less », un chant de
ralliement des manifestations qui incluent les requêtes pour le suffrage
universel- un projet désormais impossible suite aux récents changements du
système électoral par Beiijing- et l’amnistie pour les milliers de protestataires
arrêtés.
