INTRODUCTION
Chances are that if you have downloaded this guide, you are
already making music and producing your own songs and
demos. You might have your music on Soundcloud, Spotify or
different streaming platforms.

But if you are not aware of how to get your music used in
media(TV, film, on the web etc), you could be missing out on
making money from your recordings.

In this guide I will walk you through the 7 simple steps to start
making money with stock music.

STEP
JUST LISTEN
1
You’ve watched endless YouTube videos and have skipped the
annoying ads before the video starts.

You are also tired of the same commercials you see on TV in

between your favourite show or football match.

All you want to do is to watch what you’ve tuned into.

But it’s right HERE where you will find the best examples of
production music.

Here are the 3 things you can do to familiarize yourself with

what production music (aka royalty free music) is.

Listen to commercials and pop-up ads online

(YouTube, Facebook and Instagram).
Listen to TV commercials and infomercial ads, as
well as background music from your favourite
shows.
Listen to music from royalty free libraries that are
already online and up for sale or ready to be
licensed.

By doing this you will become familiar with the sound of

production music and how it’s used in real life.

STEP COMPOSE THE RIGHT
2 TYPE OF MUSIC
Now that you’ve heard and studied the music from different
ads and commercials, and have also looked around the
different royalty free music sites, it is time to start writing your
first stock music hit.

Regardless of what style of music you write, you need to write

and compose it within the frame of stock music.

What does this mean?

Here are 3 things to consider when writing stock music:

Get to the point quick. Avoid long intros.

Keep it moving and introduce new musical
elements every bar or so. (Don’t overdo it)
Keep it K.I.S.S. (keep it simple, stupid). Your
music should be as simple as possible and
melodies should be memorable.

STEP CREATE EDITS AND
3 ALTERNATIVE MIXES
After you have composed your masterpiece, you will need to do
different edits of your music.
Why?
Because not every commercial or ad has the same length or
duration.

For example: for a national TV ad the duration is 60 seconds, for

a local TV ad it’s 30 seconds, and for a web ad it’s 15 seconds.
There is also radio and podcasting, which rely heavily on stings
and bumpers.

Here are a few examples of the different edits:

60 second
30 second
15 second
Sting
Bumper
Seamless loop
Drum and bass version
No drums version
Bed version

STEP DESCRIBE & TAG
4 YOUR MUSIC
Describing and properly tagging your music is by far the most
important aspect of stock music.
Here is the proper way of describing and tagging:

Description: Inspiration and uplifting music track

with catchy melodies that evoke feelings of
happiness and joy. Featuring piano, electric
guitar and background stings.
Tag: Achievement, advertising, background,
business, commercial, confident, corporate,
electric guitar, emotional, hopeful, inspirational,
motivational, positive, progress, success,
successful, upbeat, uplifting

BONUS TIP!
The name of your track should reflect the
feelings and emotions that you want to evoke.
For example:
-A happy day
-Together we win
-We can do it
-On top of the world

STEP
5 JOIN A P.R.O.

It is important that you join a performance rights organization

(P.R.O.), so you can get paid when your music gets placed on TV
shows, film and commercials.

P.R.O.s collect license fees on behalf of songwriters, composers

and music publishers and distribute them as royalties to those
members whose work has been performed.

Performance royalties are earned when a musical work is

played on radio stations, TV and commercials, as well as other
media, such as the Internet.

Here are a few of the P.R.O.s

ASCAP (US)
BMI (US)
SESAC (US)
GLOBAL MUSIC RIGHTS (US)
SOCAN (CAN)

PRS FOR MUSIC (UK)

STEP BUILD YOUR
6 CATALOG
Writing music for media or production music is a marathon not
a sprint.
You should compose new music on a regular basis.

Set goals and targets on how many music tracks you will write
in one week, one month and in a year.

The more music you have out there, the better the chances of
making money from your compositions.

stockmusiclicensing.com 11
STEP SUBMIT YOUR
7 MUSIC
So you have your first bunch of music tracks ready to upload.
You’ve named, described and tagged them too.
At this point it’s a good idea to start uploading your music so
you can start making money.

Here is a list of libraries to get you started:

- audiojungle
- Pond5
- Luckstock
- Productiontrax
- 123RF
- Audiomicro
- Melody Loops
- Motion Elements
- Wizzy sounds
- Songtradr
- Dreamstime
- Tunefruit
- V.fine music
- Tune society

** Beware that at times stock music libraries close their doors to new admissions .
Visit each site to find out their curent status.
