INDIA TILL 2030 — TESTING
THE MARGINAL UTILITY OF
POLITICAL STABILITY
Our biggest challenges will emerge from
domestic politics.
A decadal “look ahead,” even as geopolitical,
technological and environmental disruptions
push uncertainty to worrying levels, closely
resembles a fool’s wager. The upside, however,
is an even chance of getting it right, just like

HEALTH DATA MANAGEMENT POLICY GETS NOD

The health data management policy under the scheme is expected to act as a “guidance
document” across the National Digital Health Ecosystem (NDHE), setting out the
minimum standard for data privacy protection.
The health Ministry Monday approved a policy under the National Digital Health Mission
(NDHM) to protect and manage personal data of patients using the digital services of the scheme.
“This policy is to be read along with, and not in contradiction to, any applicable law, or any
instrument having the effect of any law together with the Blueprint, the information security
policy, the data retention and archival policy and any other policy which may be issued for the
implementation of the NDHM,” stated the National Health Authority, which is implementing the
scheme. Read more...

FOR BEIJING AND NEW DELHI, 2020 WAS THE POINT OF NO

RETURN
Indian foreign policy has been at the front and centre of challenging China’s global designs. New
Delhi was the first country to warn the world of the dangers of China’s BRI at a time when
almost every other country was willing to buy into Beijing’s narrative.
In a year that challenged policymakers across the
world, one development will perhaps have the most
significant long-term impact in the Indo-Pacific —
the ongoing standoff between India and China in
the Himalayas. Chinese forces have shown no
inclination to back away from the positions they
occupied along the Line of Actual Control (LAC),
which divides India- and China-controlled territory
in Ladakh region, since April. Meanwhile, Indian
troops have been amassing at the disputed border,
with New Delhi demanding comprehensive
restoration of the status quo ante. Several rounds
of military and diplomatic talks have failed to yield
any results, underlining the high stakes for both
sides. Read more...

Indian Foreign Policy and Its Aspirations: Institutional

Design Matters
The MEA’s restructuring is an exercise to prepare for the aspirations of a 21st-
century India
On 13 September 1783, the Board of
Directors of the East India Company
passed a resolution at Fort William, to
create a department that would help
“relieve the pressure” on the Warren
Hastings administration in conducting its
“secret and political business”. Those were
difficult times for the East India Company,
having just barely saved face against the
Maratha Empire in the First Anglo-
Maratha War, and losing to Hyder Ali in
the South. The British Parliament was
about to pass the Pitts India Act, 1784,
which would further limit the independent
powers of the East India Company. This
department expanded its outreach to
diplomacy, to finally become the IFS.

HOW DID BUSINESS’S ROLE IN

SOCIETY CHANGE IN 2020?
What are the 10 most important stories about the
intersection of business and society in 2020? Covid-
related issues top the list and include both ways
companies innovated and the roadblocks that resulted
in less progress on sustainable development.
A once-in-a-century global pandemic — an
unfathomable tragedy — devastated lives and
economies. But in a miraculous display of scientific
prowess, Pfizer, Moderna, and other pharmaceutical
companies produced what appeared to be highly
effective Covid-19 vaccines by December. After a year
of loss, there was a fresh glimmer of hope. Read more...

The 2020s will be decade of digital lending

with payments as steppingstone

As we move more towards a cash-flow based system of lending, companies are

building their own risk assessment models for borrowers using both payment and
non-payment data.
Cash remains king in India, but COVID-19 has proved a better accelerator for the adoption of digital
payments than the 2016 demonetisation, which outlawed 86 percent of cash notes, since people fear
contracting the virus through physical notes. By 2030, India expects digital payment transactions
worth US$ 856.6 billion. Notwithstanding the upheavals of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2010s were
perhaps the decade for digital payments in India, with the government using such payments to push its
financial inclusion agenda. The Jan Dhan Yojana has been instrumental for financial inclusion, with the
opening of more than 400 million basic savings bank accounts. Read more...
