WHY INDIA REFUSED TO JOIN THE WORLD’S BIGGEST

TRADING BLOC
New Delhi chose protectionism over the RCEP. History suggests it made the wrong call.
On Sunday, Nov. 15, 15 Asian nations representing nearly a third of the global economy signed the
Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), forming the world’s biggest trading bloc. But one
Asian economic giant was missing: India. Despite protracted negotiations, New Delhi refused to join the
accord. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had in November last year said the decision to not be a part of
RCEP was guided by the impact it will have on the “lives and livelihood of all Indians, especially vulnerable
sections of the society”. Economists and policy analysts have argued that India would in fact benefit from
joining the RCEP. Read more...

NO-TRADE DEAL BREXIT STILL POSSIBLE, UK MINISTER SAYS

Just 30 days before Britain leaves the EU's orbit following a standstill transition period since it
formally quit the bloc, the sides are trying to agree a trade deal to avoid a rupture that could
snarl almost $1 trillion in annual trade.
A senior British minister said on Tuesday there was
still a chance of a turbulent Brexit without a trade
deal as talks with the European Union had snagged
on fishing, governance rules and dispute resolution.
With each side urging the other to compromise, a
French official said Britain must clarify its positions
and "really negotiate", and cautioned that the EU
would not accept a "substandard deal".
Michael Gove, Chancellor of the Duchy of
Lancaster, the cabinet minister who oversees the
Brexit talks for London, said a deal was close but
that to get it over the line the EU would have to live
up to its responsibilities. Read more...

Make America trade again

There will definitely be a push towards multilateralism and more global
engagements that was derelict these past four years.
The years of 1944-1945 were seminal. The
world both crumbled and began to rejig
itself as new pacts and agreements were
inked. Since then, the Bretton Woods
agreement has seen Washington play a
key role in shaping multilateralism through
organisations such as the International
Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World
Bank.. American foreign policy’s
shibboleth has long espoused a sense of
involvement in world affairs. If there was
communism, it became Washington’s
concern to preclude its pervasive effect; if
there was lack of democracy, Washington
got involved; if there was suppression of
dissent and dictatorship brewing, it meant
it aroused Washington’s ire. Read more...

Why businesses must lead the race to net-

zero emissions

Members of the Race to Zero alliance account for nearly 25% of global
CO₂ emissions and more than 50% of GDP
In the fight against climate change, the world has reached a tipping point. More and more
companies are waking up to the opportunities of a zero-carbon economy, but we urgently need to
scale the endeavour to cement low-carbon practices along supply chains and across societies.
The prize is clear: by setting bold targets to phase out fossil fuels, cut waste and end deforestation;
companies, cities and other non-state actors can send a powerful signal to governments around the
world in support of strong climate policies. That vote of confidence will reinforce ambitions and
increase the chances of success at the pivotal COP26 UN climate conference in November 2021.

Major international film festivals opts for hybrid version

Film festivals have also announced their
desire to adapt without waiting for the
uncertainty to be over.
At festivals across the world where his films have
premiered, Sanal Kumar Sasidharan has always waited
for the moment when the screenings ended to gauge
the reaction of the audience. “Different audiences react
differently,” says the Malayalam director.
The Covid-19 global pandemic has kept filmmakers
away from festivals, as hybrid versions have become the
norm across the world. Read more...
