CE 318: DESIGN OF MASONRY STRUCTURES
TEST No2
Time: 60 min

Question 1:
a) Mention the 3 factors influencing the bending moment coefficient in laterally loaded
walls.
b) List any 4 types of bonds associated with brickwork.
c)Differentiate Jointing and Pointing as used in Masonry
d) With aid of diagrams, differentiate between headers and stretchers
e) List and draw the two types of Joint finishes that are resistant to rainwater trapping.

Question 2:

Determine the characteristic wind pressure that can be resisted by the cavity wall shown below
if the construction details are as follows:
a) Outer leaf: Clay bricks having a water absorption 7%- 12% laid in mortar designation

Cii)
b) Inner leaf: Solid concrete blocks of compressive strength 3.6 Nmm and length 390

mm, height 190 mm and thickness 100 mm also laid in mortar designation (ii).
Assume that the masonry units are Category I, the Category of Construction is Normal, and the

Vertical edges are unsupported

TEST No 1
Time: 75 min

Question1:
a) What is the main purpose for
damp proof course (d.p.c)?
b)What is the general average thickness for mortar joints in bricks/ blockwork?
c) Mention any 3 functions of mortar in
Masonry construction?
d) Blocks are manufacture in two basic forms.
Differentiate them.
e) Determine the characteristic
compressive strength of brickwork constructed with
standard format bricks of unit compressive strength 15 N/mm and a 1:1:6 mortar?

Question 2:
The internal load-bearing brick wall with the cross-section plan shown below is 3.5
highm
wall with 215 mm thick and constructed from the standard
format bricks of compressive
strengthD N/mm?. The bricks are laid in mortardesignation (ii). Calculate the Ultimate
Vertical load bearing capacity of the wall assuming that the
categories of manufacturing and
construction controls are Category 1 and Normal respectively.
Furthermore, the resistance to
lateral loading of the wall {end conditions} is enhanced. Take the maximum
eccentricity, e <
