6000/8000 PLATFORM QUICK CARD

OPTICAL SPECTRUM ANALYSIS WITH THE OSA: ALARMS SET UP


The following procedure outlines how to use the 6000/8000 platform with an OSA/WDM module to qualify WDM systems for
conformance testing or verification testing. This measurement is done to ensure that the system is in conformance with the
equipment requirements
Please read the entire procedure BEFORE starting.

Part 1 - Configuring the 6000/8000 platform

Step Press first Explanation and/or action(s) to be made afterwards


If power supply can be provided, plug the AC/DC adapter to mains and 6000/8000 platform and wait

for a double beep and flashing “On” LED

Switch-on the unit and wait the completion of auto-test (45 seconds)

Press “System” and use the arrow keys to select the OSA function.

Press the select key to activate the appropriate function (becomes yellow).

Wait until tuning process is completed before starting the setting (≈2mn)

Press “Setup” and repeat it until you are on the OSA test setup tab.

4 The unit will select automatically the full auto mode.

A grid must have been defined before setting up the alarms. Refer to the “Grids set up” Quickcard.

Using the arrow keys, go to “Measurements” Menu and adjust “Channel Detection” to “Grid ”.

Using the arrow keys, go to “Results Screen” Menu and adjust “Alarms” to “Active ”.

Part 2 – Configuring the Global Alarms

Step Press first Explanation and/or action(s) to be made afterwards


In the “Alarms” menu, select “Global alarms”.

2 : Select “Yes” to check if the number of channels detected is the same as the
number defined in the grid.
: Editable, from 0.1 dB to 60 dB. It’s the maximum acceptable variation
between max. and min. power on all channels.
: Editable, from 0.1 dB to 60 dB. It’s the maximum acceptable variation between
max. and min. SNR on all channels.
: Editable, from -59.9 dBm to +20 dBm. It’s the maximum acceptable
composite power value.

Part 3 – Configuring the Channel Alarms

Step Press first Explanation and/or action(s) to be made afterwards


In the “Alarms” menu, select “Channel alarms”.

Alarms are activated or disactivated for every channels defined in the grid.

: Maximum wavelength drift defined with the delta of frequency “Delta F”
: Minimum power defined with “P Min“
: Maximum power defined with “P Min“
: Minimum power defined with “SNR Min“

: Select the channel number you want to parameter


: Editable when “Max channel offset” alarm activated , from 0 to 2 THz
: Editable when “Min channel power” alarm activated, from -80 dBm to +9.9 dBm
: Editable when “Max channel power” alarm activated, from -79.9 dBm to +10 dBm
: Editable when “Min OSNR” alarm activated, from 0 to 50 dB
Press “Update for all channels” if you want to set up the same values for every channels. Repeat it

for each parameter.
