Empirical and Molecular Formula

1. Find the empirical formula of a compound that contains 63.52 % iron and 36.48% sulfur.

ELEMENT PERCENT ATOMIC MASS RELATIVE NO. OF

COMPOSITION MASS

Iron (Fe) 63.52% 55.845 0.6352

x 100=1.137
55.845

Sulfur (S) 36.48% 32.065 0.3648

x 100=1.138
32.065

Simple Ratio of Fe:S

1.137 1.138
: = 1Fe:1S Therefore the empirical formula of the compound is FeS (iron (III) Sulfide).
1.137 1.137

2. A 170.00 g sample of an unidentified compound contains 29.84 g sodium, 67.49 g

chromium, and 72.67 g oxygen. Find the empirical formula.

Atomic Mass of the elements in the problem:

Na: 22.99, Cr: 52, O: 16

29.84 g 0.175∗ 100 0.76

Na: = 0.175 = 0.76 =1
170.00 g 22.99 0.76

67.49 g 0.397 ∗100 0.76

Cr : = 0.397 = 0.76 =1
170.00 g 52 0.76

72.67 g 0.428∗ 100 2.675

O: = 0.428 = 2.675 = 3.5
170.00 g 16 0.76
Since our values should be in the smallest whole number we multiply 1, 1 and 3.5 by 2. So we

have the empirical formula Na2Cr2O7.

3. Determine the molecular formula of a compound with an empirical formula of NH2 and a

formula mass of 32.06 amu.

Given:

Empirical Formula: NH2 Atomic mass of N = 14.0 g/mol

formula mass: 32.06 g/mol Atomic Mass of H: 1.01 g/mol

Molar mass of the empirical formula:

14.01+(2 x 1.01) = 16.03 g/mol since for every N atom there are 2 H atoms.

Formula mass 32.06

=¿ = 2, then we multiply this to the empirical formula.
Molar mass 16.03

Molecular Formula = 2 x Empirical Formula = 2 x (NH2) = N2H4. So we have the molecular formula

N2H4.
