Theory
Like plant cells, animal cell is also the
structural and functional unit of living organisms. However, cell
wall is absent in animal cells.
The outermost protective
animal cell comprises cell covering of an animal cell is a cell membrane. An
membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm and other cell organelles.
Cheek cells are
squamous epithelium. The epithelial tissue is the outermost
and cavity of an animal body. Cheek cells are thin and flat

pavement.
Procedure
1. Rinse your mouth with fresh but warm water to remove
any food particles.
2. Gently scrap the inner side of your cheek with the help of a toothpick or a clean and sterilized
spatula.
3. Keep the scrapped material into a drop of water.
4. Spread the scrappings, uniformly with the help of needle.
5. Add a drop of methylene blue stain. Put a drop of glycerine over it after about 3-minutes.
6.
6. Gently place the coverslip with the help of needle over the slide to avoid entry of air bubbles.
7. Remove the excess glycerine from the edges of coverslip with the help of blorting paper.
8. Observe the slide first under low power and then high power of microscope.
9. Draw diagrams of cells as seen.

Cell membrane is distinct. It comprises a dense cytoplasm and a distinct nucleus.

Results and Discussion

Cheek cells are epithelial tissue. These are small, polygonal and compactly arranged. Cells have
irregular cell membrane as outermost boundaries. Each cell encloses a distinct nucleus and a vacuole.

Precautions
1. Scrap the cheeks gently to avoid injury.
2. Scrappings should be thin and uniform.
3. Avoid the excess or under staining of the cheeks cells.
4. Avoid the entry of air bubbles while mounting the coverslip.
