Project Idea: BAKING and COOKING

I. Introduction/ Background

What motivated you to pursue this project?

Social media has been awash in people sharing how their lives are changing due
to the coronavirus. Efforts to “flatten the curve” have meant people are spending much
more time cooped up at home, and many have turned to baking or cooking. As we can
see, people nowadays are fond of cooking and baking and through social media, they can
sell it also. So the heart of the explanation is that cooking and baking bring comfort and
income. However, Why should we concern ourselves with the validation and approval of
foreigners for us to really appreciate our own food? This question has been asked so
many times. Because our culture is not homogenous compared to, let’s say, Japan, our
food has to be presented differently, perhaps by region. Take the case of Singapore, they
have diverse culinary traditions: Hokkien, Cantonese, Teochew, Peranakan, Malay, South
Indian and Eurasian, and yet, they’re able to articulate and present their food in a
culturally cohesive manner. We must also be aware of our ignorance and bigotry with
regards to the food of other regions. If one entity proclaims that a particular province is
the “culinary capital” of the Philippines, that is simply showing arrogance and disregard
for the other great culinary traditions of the country. Perhaps we should be more aware of
our cultural differences and try the food of the provinces other than ours, and embrace the
food of the more than 80 ethno-linguistic groups of the country, then we will not be
ignorant of our culture. We think it’s really a matter of perception and confidence in our
own cuisine. It’s great that nowadays we’re very proud of what the Philippines has to
offer the world in terms of food, restaurants and ingredients and I think the pride and
positive feelings towards it now will push it to be better understood by everyone around
the world including ourselves. In effect, those developments will help Philippine cuisine
really take off globally.
II. Project Scope

In our kitchen also, the maths is performed. For cooking or baking anything, a
series of steps are followed, telling us how much of the quantity to be used for cooking,
the proportion of different ingredients, methods of cooking, the cookware to be used, and
many more. Such are based on different mathematical concepts. Indulging children in the
kitchen while cooking anything, is a fun way to explain maths as well as basic cooking
methods.

What mathematical concept will be applied?

1. Mathematical algorithm - it is a procedure, a description of a set of steps that can be used

to solve a mathematical computation when cooking or baking.

2. Mathematical Operations - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are the main
operations needed when cooking and baking.

3. Ratio and proportion - Instead of measuring by cups or pounds, ingredients are defined in
“parts” that are relative to each other in quantity. By using ratios production can be easily
scaled to the desired quantity. Ratios can also be used to develop recipes, and recipes can
be evaluated through ratio analysis to test for accuracy.

What will be covered by your project?

This project will cover planning, taking measurements, time management and of
course, cleanliness because all of these are necessary when cooking and baking.

What will not be included in your project?

Anything that is not related to the project especially in cooking and baking

III. Benefits Forecasted

Significance of your project

All of the people can benefit from this project. They will learn not just the measurements or how
to cook some Filipino dishes but as well as they will learn the history of cooking and baking.
Filipino dishes are unique as they draw inspiration from several influences. Our food reflects the
Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, Western and Pacific Islander flavors developed during our many
years of colonization. Beliefs and viewpoints in the preparation of the food were largely
influenced by intermingling with the Spanish, Chinese, Arabic and Hindu cultures. Add to this
the mix and match that happens when it comes to ingredients and methods used in cooking,
describing our food in a line or two becomes a real challenge and of course, our food is full of
flavors, colors and delicious aroma. The range of diversity is quite broad from sweet to sour to
salty. Letting each flavor have its own way without having to blend together and yet resulting in
dishes that have that salty, sweet and tangy taste. Filipino dishes are very colorful combined with
vegetables, seafood, lean meat and many more. It’s like having a full and colorful sensory
experience with each meal. Drawing from a rich cultural history and the diversity of flavors,
aroma and color that make up the Filipino cuisine, it is sure to bring to the table a one of a kind
experience. Filipino people are good at what we call “Tayahin” or figure out how much or how
many ingredients will be needed.

IV. Project Plan

Things to be done to accomplish the project

1. Conduct a meeting with the group and discuss what will be the final output. After
deliberation, we came up with the idea of Cooking and baking since it is prevalent
today.
2. Answering the questions
a. How can we achieve success in baking?
b. How can I improve my cooking skills?
c. ingredients needed when cooking and baking Filipino dishes
3. Planning what dishes will be featured
4. Start in making or formulating the needed ingredients and other necessary things
in the kitchen when cooking and baking.
5. Start layouting the cookbook.

Here are some tips when making cookbook

● Choose the right trim size

● Create your recipe layouts in advance
● Know your chapters/sections/theme in advance
● Test, re-test, and proofread
● Be consistent with your names and measurements
● Follow a common recipe structure
● Write engaging recipe headnotes
● Use less food than you would serve
● Take photos with natural light
● Vary your locations and plating backgrounds
6. Taking videos for cooking and baking tutorials.
7. Editing the videos created for presentation
8. Presenting the final product or output.

What would be your final output?

- A cookbook that features Original Filipino dishes. Making a cookbook can be a really
rewarding experience for people who love their time in the kitchen and those who really
want to learn cooking and baking. It can also be rewarding to get your hands on a
beautiful cookbook, with no-fail favorites created by a friend or someone you follow.
Cookbooks inspire us, teach us, and ultimately feed us.
