This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for Type 1 information equipment, which uses
radio-frequency energy and fully complies with the specifications limiting computer information equipment in radio
interference regulations (VCCI rules). If not installed and used properly according to the manufacturer's instructions,
this device may cause interference to radio and television reception. However, there is no guarantee that interference
will not occur in a particular installation. If this equipment does cause interference to radio and television reception,
which can be determined by turning the equipment off and on, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference
by one or more of the following measures:
❑ Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna
❑ Increase the separation between the equipment and receiver
❑ Connect the equipment into an outlet on a circuit different from that to which the receiver is connected
❑ Consult the dealer or an experienced radio/TV technician for help.
The user may find the following booklet, prepared by the Federal Communications Commission, helpful: How to

Technical Overview EPSON PowerLite 5500C/5550C/7550C Service Manual

Outline of the Projection Process

1. A computer (1 or 2) sends digital R/G/B signals to the main board. The main board
receives analog signals (S-Video or Video signals) through the VJ board. The main
board converts analog signals into digital signals.
2. The digital video signals are then stored in the video memory (SRAM) on the main
board. The driver boards then generate signals to drive the R/G/B light valves.
3. The R/G/B light valves are independent panels. The driver board generates signals
that drive the LCD shutters. These signals stop or transmit light from the light guide.
4. The prism combines the lights transmitted through the light valves, and the light is
projected through the projector lens.

EPSON PowerLite 5500C/5550C/7550C Service Manual Technical Overview

2.2 Optical System (Optical Engine)

The optical engine consists of four components: the light guide, the optical head/prism
(including the R/G/B light valves), the driver boards, and the projection lens. Together
these units constitute one replaceable part.

Lens Intake Fan FC Board

Lamp Socket

Figure 2-2. Optical Engine (Bottom View)

Caution:
The optical engine cannot be repaired without special equipment. Do not disassemble it,
or pixel divergence may occur. The optical engine’s alignment is factory-adjusted, and
specific electrical corrections are made on the driver board at the factory and stored in
flash ROM. Never remove or replace any part of the optical engine.

Table 2-1. Optical Engine Functions

Optical Unit Description
Lamp inner housing Includes one UHE lamp as a light source. The FU board, mounted on the lamp inne
housing, contains a fuse that tells the projector whether the lamp is new.
Light guide Disperses the light from the light source uniformly using an A/B lens array.
Ultraviolet rays are also eliminated. A condenser lens and a mirror separate the ligh
into three colors (RGB).
Driver boards Convert the R/G/B display signals from the main board into 12 analog signal states
for the PowerLIte 7550C, and 6 states for the PowerLite 5500C/5550C; also
controls the display image by referencing correction data written to flash ROM.
Optical head/prism Consists of three light valves (R/G/B), a polarization plate, and a prism. Each light
valve controls a pixel shutter with 12 levels for the PowerLite 7550C, and 6 levels
for the PowerLite 5500C/5550C. The prism combines the R/G/B signals and
transfers them to the projection lens.

2.2.1 Light Guide

The light guide eliminates ultraviolet rays, which are harmful to the light valves, and
makes the light intensity from the light source lamp uniform before dividing it into three
light outputs (R/G/B). The guide contains lenses and mirrors to separate and focus the
light beams.

Light Guide Components

• Lens arrays A and B
After lens arrays A and B disperse the light from the projection lamp, the brightness
is roughly uniform. A UV filter that coats the surface of the lens array eliminates
ultraviolet rays. The light dispersed through lens arrays A and B is further dispersed
through the PBS to make the light intensity uniform.
• CDM
The CDM is a red light filter. The CDM (A) filter transmits only red light and reflects
blue and green light from the projection lamp.
• GDM
The GDM is a blue light filter. The GDM filter transmits only blue light from the
projection lamp. As described above, the CDM outputs only blue and green light to
the GDM. The GDM reflects the green light and provides it to condenser lens G.
• Condenser lens L
Condenser lens L collects the light dispersed by lens arrays A and B to prevent
reduction and provide light to mirror L at the next stage.

EPSON PowerLite 5500C/5550C/7550C Service Manual Technical Overview

• R/G/B condenser lenses

The R/G/B condenser lenses collect the light dispersed into the polarization plate on
the optical head.
• R/C mirror unit and lens adjusting screw
The R/C mirror unit reflects light to the E/B condenser lens. The reflection angle can
be adjusted with the lens adjusting screw.
• Mirror B
Mirror B reflects light to condenser lens E.
• Lens array adjusting screw
The lens array adjusting screw is used to adjust the positions of lens arrays A and B
to obtain a uniform source light.

2.2.2 Lamp Inner Housing

The lamp inner housing includes the projection lamp (120 W), the power supply
connector, and the fuse board (FU board). The entire lamp inner housing, including the
projection lamp, is a single user-replaceable item.

Lamp
Power Supply Connector FU Board

Figure 2-4. Lamp Inner Housing

Projection Lamp
The brightness of the projection lamp decreases with use. After running about 2000
hours, the lamp’s brightness decreases by one-third to one-half. If the lamp seems
weak, you should replace it even if it’s been used for less than 2000 hours.

The CPU on the main board monitors the number of hours that the projection lamp has
been used, and writes the total operating time to the EEPROM on the main board. If the
lamp nears or has reached the end of its life, the CPU causes the following to occur:

• When the total operating time of the lamp reaches approximately 1900 hours (1900
to 2000 hours), the projector’s indicator light flashes orange and red. The lamp runs
only 100 hours after the indicator starts to flash, so you should replace the lamp as
soon as possible.
• When the lamp’s total operating time exceeds 2000 hours, the lamp does not come
on. You need to replace the entire lamp inner housing.
Note:
The lamp hours counter is reset to zero only when a new lamp inner housing is
installed. The fuse on the FU board is blown during this reset process. If a used lamp
inner housing is installed, the lamp hours counter is not reset to zero.

2-6
EPSON PowerLite 5500C/5550C/7550C Service Manual Technical Overview

FU (Fuse) Board
The lamp inner housing includes a fuse board to differentiate between a new lamp and a
lamp that has been used. The board has a 100 mA rated fuse. When the lamp inner
housing is replaced, the new fuse completes a circuit, causing the total lamp hours
counter in the EEPROM on the main board to reset to zero. The main board then sinks
current through the fuse, causing it to blow.

When the lamp inner housing is in place, the FU board electrically connects to the FC
board, installed on the bottom of the light guide.

2.2.3 Driver Boards

The projector has two driver boards. They convert the R/G/B display signals from the
main board into 6 or 12 analog signal states (for driving the light valves) and control the
displayed image by referencing electrical correction data stored in a flash ROM.

Caution:
The driver boards are integral to the optical engine. Do not replace or exchange
individual parts of the optical engine, such as driver boards.

Figure 2-6. Driver Board 1

Figure 2-6. Driver Board 2

Driver Board Functions

Driver board 2 receives digital video data from the main board. The data is corrected and
adjusted for brightness, contrast, chroma, and density. The EEPROM on driver board 1
contains the data used for image correction. Driver board 1 converts the digital video
data to analog signals for driving the light valves.

2.3 Power Supply

Three power supplies are built into the projector:

• Power Supply A
Power Supply A performs primary filtering and regulating of power from the AC
line. It powers the lamp ballast and Power Supply B.
• Lamp Ballast
The lamp ballast powers the projection lamp. The ballast in the PowerLite
5500C uses what Seiko Epson describes as “DC drive.” The ballast in the
PowerLite 5550C and 7550C uses “pulse drive.”
• Power Supply B
Power Supply B generates the low voltages used for powering the projector’s
circuit boards.
The ballast and power supply A reside together on one side of the projector. If you need
to replace them, they can either be ordered separately or as a single unit.

fan, lamp ballast, and DC regulator.

Interlock Switch Ballast

EMI Filter Circuit Primary Regulator

Figure 2-9. Power Supply Board A

Power Supply Board A and Ballast Functions

• The filter and rectifier circuit reduces noise on the AC line and generates DC voltage
for power supply board B.
• The ballast power supply circuit supplies DC voltage (240-390 V) to the projection
lamp. It’s controlled by the ballast power control signal from the main board. (The
power switch on the control panel or on the remote control—not the main power
switch—controls ballast power.)
• An interlock switch (shown above) works with the lamp cover on the bottom of the
projector. If the cover is removed, the interlock switch shuts off the supply of AC
power.
• A thermal safety switch (not shown) protects against overheating. The safety switch
is mounted above the lamp inner housing and shuts off AC power to the power
supply if the projector gets too hot.
• A fan is built into the power supply. Power for the fan is provided by power supply
board B (CN202). The fan has 2 speeds: high and low. A thermistor senses the air
temperature near the fan. If the fan stops working and the projector overheats, the
thermistor can shut off the power supply.

2.4 Main Board

The main board controls all projector functions except audio output and display signal
generation. It consists of a CPU, ROM (Flash ROM and EEPROM), video memory, a
digital video controller, and circuits that control the interfaces, control panel, power
management, and other functions.

The main board also includes the Computer In and Mouse/Com interface connectors.

Interface Connectors

Main Board Operation

Video processing
Video input is passed through the VJ board. The input signals are converted to digital
signals (if they’re not digital already) by the chroma processor and stored in the frame
buffer.

The video amplifier circuit converts incoming digital signals into analog signals. The VAC
sends the analog RGB signals to the “Computer Out” interface and to the ADC. The
ADC then converts them back to digital signals. This display data is written to the video
memory (SRAM) and resized.

To display the image, the resized data is then sent to the digital video controller and
stored in the graphic/text RAM. The digital video controller sends the information with a
sync signal to driver board 2.

Other functions
When the projector is turned on using the control panel or remote control power button,
the main board generates a reset signal to turn on the power supply and initialize the
control circuits. (+3.3 volts are always supplied to the main board for power on/off
control, as long as the projector’s power cord is plugged in.) After the projector is turned
on, the CPU reads its program from flash ROM and writes it into SRAM, and then sets
projector functions according to the program.

The main board includes temperature detection circuits that monitor the temperature at
various locations. If the temperature exceeds predefined limits, the CPU can shut off the
ballast power supply and increase the fan speed.

An EEPROM and timer circuit keep track of the total operating time of the projection
lamp (lamp inner housing) as described in the table below:

Table 2-6. Projection Lamp

Condition Projector State
Projection lamp needs to be replaced soon (the For five minutes after the projector is turned on, the
lamp has been in use more than 1900 hours) projector’s indicator light alternately flashes red and
orange. The projection lamp remains on.

When the projection lamp indicator flashes red and orange or stays red, you need to
replace the projection lamp (lamp inner housing). After it’s replaced and you turn on the
projector, the fuse in the new lamp inner housing shorts and melts. This resets the lamp
hours counter.

Interface functions
The mouse/com interface lets the remote control be used as a mouse. The projector
comes with two serial cables, one for the PC and one for the Mac, which let the remote
control be used in this way.

An optional “main cable” is also available which works with the ELP Link III software to
let the user draw lines and figures on screen with the remote control. One end of the
main cable is connected to the Mouse/Com interface with a 13-pin jack. The other end of
the main cable has 3 connectors. Proper use of these connectors depends on the type
of computer, mouse and operating system used. The basic connection scheme is shown

2.5 Other Boards

2.5.1 AU (Audio) Board

The AU board includes an audio controller (IC100), 2 amplifiers (Q100/101), and a
connector for the internal speaker. The audio controller controls the volume (including
the Mute function) using serial data (SDA/SCL) output from the main board. There are 3
external interfaces attached to the board: Audio In, Audio Out, and Computer Out.

Figure 2-16. AU Board

• Audio input signals from Computer (Audio In) or from a video device (via Audio L or
R) are input to the audio controller and amplified by the sound preamplifier. They are
output to the Audio Out interface or the built-in speaker through the output selector.
• When the cable jack is connected to the Audio Out interface, the “ADET” signal is
sent to the main board. The main board diverts the output to the external speakers
and stops sending output to the internal speakers.
• The sound controller performs audio signal output selection and volume control
based on the SCL/SDA (serial data/clock) signals provided by the main board.

2.5.2 VJ (Video Jack) Board

The VJ board includes the composite video, S-Video, and repeater interfaces. The
chroma processors on the VJ board convert S-Video input signals to digital RGB signals.
The Audio L/R interface is only a signal relay.

The optional repeater (made by Xantech Corp.) can be connected to the repeater
interface (J200). The repeater provides the same functions as the standard RC receptor
board. Without the repeater, the remote controller can only be used from the front of the
projector.

Two thermistors are combined on 1 connector and treated as one part. The lamp
thermistor is a temperature detection thermistor installed on the lamp outer housing near
the safety switch. The PBS thermistor is attached to the light guide. Both thermistors
protect the area around the projection lamp from overheating by shutting off power
regulation in the power supply if the temperature rises over a certain limit. This
temperature is lower than the temperature that triggers the safety switch.

2.7.4 LV Thermistor
The LV thermistor is a temperature detection thermistor installed above the light valves.
The thermal stability of the light valves (liquid crystal panels) is poor. If cooling is not
sufficient because the intake fan (beneath the light valves) has failed or the filter (above
the light valves) is dirty, power is shut off to protect the light valves from overheating.

2.7.5 Air Thermistor

The air thermistor is installed on the side of the fan for power supply A. If the area
around the power supply unit overheats because of abnormal fan or circuit operation, the
air thermistor shuts off power.

Fan Functions
• Each fan has 3 lead wires; one is used for feedback. If the feedback differs from
what is expected, the main board interprets this as a fan failure, turns on the red
temperature indicator, and shuts off the lamp.
• The intake and exhaust fans are controlled by a driver circuit located on the
connector board. The fans have three speeds: off, slow, and fast. The correct speed
is determined by the fan control signal from the main board.
• The two power supply fans are driven by power supply B.

Precautions
‰ The optical engine consists of the projector’s optics and the driver board (mounted
on top of the optical engine). These parts cannot be serviced in the field. Do not
disassemble the optical engine or attempt to repair any component of the optical
engine.

‰ Do not interchange the driver board or other components between optical engines. If
you experience problems with the driver board or any component of the optical
engine, the entire optical engine must be replaced or repaired at the factory.

‰ The projector’s optical engine and circuit boards are highly sensitive to static
electricity. When you remove projector parts, place them immediately in anti-static
bags.

‰ Handle the optical engine with care. It’s highly susceptible to vibration and shock.

‰ To prevent dust from contaminating the light valves, check the optical engine, lamp
inner housing, exhaust fans, and filters for dust. Clean them if necessary with a light-
duty vacuum cleaner before reassembling.

‰ The speakers contain permanent magnets. Keep them away from electromagnetic
media such as floppy disks and magnetic cards.

‰ Do not disassemble any part that is not covered in this manual.

4.3 Troubleshooting Power Problems

Inspect the AC power cable and make sure all connections inside the projector are secure.
If you’re unsure where a connector attaches, see Figure 3-1, “Electrical Connections.”

If the projector still fails to operate properly, disconnect the projector’s external interface
cables. Then follow one of these procedures:

‰ If no indicator lights come on:

1. Make sure the main power switch on the back of the projector is turned on.
2. Check the control panel for possible problems
‰ Try turning on the projector using the remote control. If the projector comes on,
the control panel may be defective, or the control panel’s connector to the main
board may have come loose.
3. Check the interlock switch to make sure it’s working properly
‰ Is the lamp cover closed securely? With the cover open, try toggling the switch
using a tool such as a plastic pen.
4. Check the safety switch
‰ Disconnect the AC power cable. Then disconnect the connector tabs from the
safety switch (the thermal switch mounted on the optical engine near the power
supply). While the safety switch is at room temperature, test it to make sure its
resistance is almost 0 ohms. Otherwise, replace the switch.
5. If none of these steps work, replace power supply A. If that fails, replace power
supply B.

‰ If any of the projector’s indicator lights come on, or if projector power cuts off
intermittently, the projector may be overheating:
1. Check the control panel for possible problems
‰ Try turning on the projector using the remote control. If the projector comes on,
the control panel may be defective, or the control panel’s connector to the main
board may have come loose. If the projector still doesn’t come on, replace the
main board.
2. Check the projector’s exhaust fans (mounted on the rear case), intake fan
(mounted on the bottom of the optical engine), and power supply fans to make sure
they’re running. Test the fans and replace them if necessary; if the intake fan or
one of the exhaust fans tests okay but doesn’t run, replace the connector board;
otherwise, replace the main board.
3. Make sure the air filters are clean to permit free airflow.
4. A thermistor may be defective. Replace all four thermistors (PBS/lamp thermistors,
light valve thermistor, and air thermistor).

4-3
Troubleshooting EPSON PowerLite 5500C/5550C/7550C Service Manual

4.4 Troubleshooting Picture Problems

If the projector fails to project an image or if the image quality is poor, disconnect the
projector’s external interface cables; if the projector is working correctly, the on-screen
message “NO SIGNAL” should appear. Then follow one of these procedures:

‰ If no image is projected (the “NO SIGNAL” message doesn’t appear):

1. Does the projector’s green power status light fail to come on? Or does the
projector’s exhaust fan (located at the rear of the projector) not come on?
‰ Check for power supply problems as described in the previous section.
2. Check the projection lamp
‰ Replace the projection lamp (lamp inner housing).
3. Check the PBS and lamp thermistors
‰ Replace the thermistors (located on top of the optical engine).
4. Reconnect CN301 on the connector board.
5. If none of these steps work, replace the main board. If that doesn’t work, replace
the optical engine.

‰ If the projector cannot project an image from a video device (attached to the projector
via the Computer 1, Computer 2, Video, or S-Video port):
1. Attach a computer monitor to the projector’s monitor interface.
‰ If the image fails to appear on the monitor, check the monitor cable or try
replacing the monitor. If the monitor and the cable are okay, replace the
projector’s main board.
‰ If the image appears on the monitor but isn’t projected, replace the projector’s
optical engine.

‰ If an image appears but its quality is poor:

1. Adjust the focus and zoom rings.
2. Press the Menu button and make the adjustments listed below for each of the video
sources shown in the table’s header:

Table 4-3. Picture Quality Adjustments

EPSON PowerLite 5500C/5550C/7550C Service Manual Troubleshooting

4.5 Troubleshooting Audio Problems

If the projector’s internal speakers output no sound, or if the Volume or Mute buttons fail to
work, check the following:

1. Check all connectors to make sure they’re secure, including CN302 on the connector
board, CN101 on the audio board, and CN501, CN900, and CN902 on the main board.
2. Check the speaker connections to the audio board.
3. If all connections seem okay, replace the audio board and then check for sound.
4. If none of these steps work, replace the main board.

4.6 Troubleshooting Control Panel Problems

If one or more buttons on the control panel don’t work, check the control panel’s
connection at CN501 on the main board. If that doesn’t help, replace the control panel. If
that still doesn’t help, replace the main board.

4-5
Troubleshooting EPSON PowerLite 5500C/5550C/7550C Service Manual

4.7 Troubleshooting Remote Control Problems

If one or more buttons on the remote control don’t work, or if the remote control doesn’t
work from a distance of 33 feet (10 m), do the following:

1. Replace the batteries in the remote.

2. Try the remote with the receptor board. If the remote doesn’t work:
‰ Check the receptor board’s connector (CN500) on the main board to make sure it’s
secure.
‰ If that doesn’t work, replace the receptor board.
3. If that doesn’t help, replace the remote.
4. If that still doesn’t help, replace the main board.

To use the remote control as a wireless mouse, the projector must be connected to the
computer either with one of the mouse cables that came with the projector (for Mac or PC),
or with the optional ELP Link III cables.

‰ If you’re using one of the standard mouse cables (either Mac or PC):

Make sure the cable is connected properly. If that doesn’t solve the problem, replace
the cable. Otherwise, replace the main board.

‰ If you’re using the optional “main cable” (ELP Link III setup):

If the effects buttons on the remote don’t work, make sure the ELP Link III software is
installed on the host computer and that the computer is properly connected to the
projector (see the projector user’s guide). If the remote still doesn’t work, do the
following:

1. Replace any cables you suspect of damage:

• main cable
• mouse cable
• serial cable
2. Reinstall the projector software on the host computer.
3. If that still doesn’t work, replace the main board.

EPSON PowerLite 5500C/5550C/7550C Service Manual Maintenance

5.1 Overview
The projector needs little maintenance. You should make sure the lens is clean and check
the air filter at the bottom of the projector. A clogged air filter can block ventilation and
cause overheating, stopping the projector from running.

5.1.1 Cleaning the Lens

Clean the lens whenever you notice dirt or dust on the surface. Lightly wipe the lens
surface with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. To remove dirt or smears on the lens, moisten a soft
cloth with an alcohol-based cleaner and gently wipe the lens surface.

5.1.2 Cleaning the Projector Case

To clean the projector case, first unplug the power cord. To remove dirt or dust, wipe the
case with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. To remove stubborn dirt or stains, moisten a soft cloth
with water and a neutral detergent. Then wipe the case.

Do not use alcohol, benzene, thinner, or other chemical detergents. These can cause the
case to warp.

5-1
Maintenance EPSON PowerLite 5500C/5550C/7550C Service Manual

5.1.3 Cleaning the Air Filter

Clean the air filter at the bottom of the projector after every 100 hours of use. If it is not
cleaned periodically, it can become clogged with dust, preventing proper ventilation. This
can cause overheating and damage the projector. To clean the air filter, follow these steps:

1. Turn off the projector and unplug the power cable.

2. Turn the projector on its side so that the handle is on top and you can access the filter
easily.
Note: Standing the projector on its side keeps dust from falling into the projector.
3. Pull up on the filter cover tab to release the filter cover. Remove the cover.

Figure 5-1. Removing the Filter Cover

4. The filter is attached to the inside of the filter cover. It is recommended that you use a
small vacuum cleaner designed for computers and other office equipment to clean the
filter. If you don’t have one, use a dry, lint-free cloth.

If the dirt is difficult to remove or if the filter is torn, replace it.

5. Replace the filter cover when you’re done.

5.1.4 Replacing the Projection Lamp (Lamp Inner Housing)

The projection lamp typically lasts for about 1500 to 2000 hours. It is time to replace the
lamp when:
• The projected image gets darker or starts to deteriorate.
• The projection lamp indicator light is either red, or flashing orange and red alternately.
• The message LAMP REPLACE appears on the screen when the projection lamp
comes on (after about 1500 hours of use).
To maintain projector brightness and image quality, replace the lamp as soon as possible.
Request the following part numbers:

For the PowerLite 5500: ELPLP06

For the PowerLite 5550 or 7550: ELPLP07

Warning: Let the lamp cool before replacing it. Also, do not touch the glass portion of the
lamp assembly. Touching the glass portion of the lamp will result in premature lamp failure.

1. Turn off the projector and unplug the power cable.

2. Turn the projector over so you can access the lamp cover.
3. Use a screwdriver, coin, or similar object to loosen the two retaining screws on the
lamp cover. When the screws are loose, lift off the lamp cover. (You cannot remove
these screws from the cover.)
