Assignment

Q#01: create high quality and low quality audio and video.

Sol:

Low Quality Audio:

 We can start by setting a low pass filter at 10 kHz or even 5 kHz. This will cut off the high
frequency harmonics and take a lot of character out of voices or instruments (think FM
radio compared to CD quality).
 We can reduce the bit rate from 16 to 8 or even lower. This will massively affect the
dynamic range removing detail from the sound. Think early 90s computer game sound
track.
 We can mix in some white noise to increase the noise floor. Think 80′s cassette tape
copied too many times.
 We can compress the audio using e.g., mp3 codec at a very low bit rate (64kbps or
lower) introducing strange sounding artefacts especially to the higher frequency sounds.

High Quality Audio:

Step 1.
Locate the audio (speaker) icon in your system’s toolbar and right click to open the audio
options menu.
Step 2.
Select Recording Devices from the menu. A new Sound menu will appear.
Step 3.
The Recording tab of this menu will be selected by default. Hover the name of the microphone
you are adjusting and right click to expose an options menu, select Properties.
Step 4.
Select the Levels tab of the Microphone Properties menu. You can click and drag the slider to
adjust the input level, or manually enter a number in the number field.
Step 5.
Next, select the advanced tab of the Microphone Properties menu. Select and confirm your
desired sample rate and bit depth from the drop down menu. The options in the drop down will
only reflect the options allowable by your microphone. Some lists may be longer with more
options, others may have only one option.
Step 6
After closing the Microphone Properties menu, the Recording tab of your sound menu will still
be open. You should now be able to confirm visually that your microphone is receiving signal
when you talk.

High Quality Video

Three factors enhance video quality:

Screen resolution: Number of horizontal and vertical pixels used to present the video image.
Frame rate: Number of individual video frames displayed per second
Compression method: Algorithm used to compress and decompress the video

Low Quality Video:

We can change the HD video into low quality video by compressing video.
We can use different software to compress video quality.
