5. INTRODUCTION
IMPORTANT
The Ive described in this manual are constructed to be used by person s expressly trained
for
• Animal protecti on
• Environmental protection
• Housing of various' animals strains In the same environment
IMPORTANT
The Sealsafe individually ventilated cage racks are designed to work exc!usively
with Tecniplast solid or filtered Sealsafe cage top covers.
,·
5.2 IMPROPER OR PROHIBITED USES
ATTENTION
The machi nes are manufadured for the specific uses described aboye ; the fo llowing uses
should be avoided
• Operation of the machine without fil ters or with the fi lter box open
• Housing in an envi ron ment which is normall y too humid (above 70% humidity)
• Housing in an environment which is normally too dry (Iess than 40% humidity)
The air IS taken from the environment by th e supply unit, the upper one
The alr pass es th rough a pre-filter tha! re!a ins any environ menta l dust and th roug h an
Hepa filter (9 9.999 DOP.): from here a cont inuous supply of sterile air is available in the
pos itlve pl en um of the su pply unit.
From here , through a fl exible connect ion , sterile air feeds the positlv plenum of lhe racks
The posltive plenum of the rack provides fi ltered air to every cage , guaranteeing a unlform
distributi on .
The sterile air supp lied to the cage flows at a hlgh level toward the cage front, fo llowing the
cage shape goes lo the bottom where it removes, at a very slow speed , 11eavy gases uch
as Carbon dioxide and Ammoni a, befare being exhausted throug h a roug h pre-filter (If
mounted) to th e negative ple num.
The exhaust air is then conveyed , through a flexible connection, to the negative unil where
a pre-filter retams the rou gh dirtiness like bedd ing and food dust or ani mal hair.
Next step is a fil tration through an Hepa filter, where the air beco mes steríle before bemg
re leased mto the environment, from an opening placed on th e top of the supply Ulll t thls
position has been speclally designed to allow a neal connection with th e alr con ditlon ing
extraction .
The airflow rate 10 the racks can be regulated by a fan speed adjuster; its value expressed
in cub lc meters per hour is constantly shown by a dig ita l instrument.
Th e airflow rate, adj ustable from O to lIS maxim um , allows the system to guarantee the
optimal air changes per hour rate in any co nd ltion
Furtherm ore, the independent airflow adjustment of the pos itive and negative uni ts perm lts
to regu late the differentlal between the supp ly and exhaust alrflow: this helps to maintain
the proper pressure barrier in any config uration
An option al functlon also allows checking , thro ugh the same in strumen t, the re lati ve
pressure between cage and environment
• Mai ntenance of a continua l positive pressure barrier, protecting cage occu ants
fro m ingres s of air borne path ogens whi lst also inh ibitlng expulsion of
aeroa llergens
pathogens.
1) The in put and exhaust fan un it and filler groups are housed in two stainless steel
boxes
The input gro up is composed of two fans , HEPA filter at 99,999 O OP and pre-filter,
hour co unter, air flow Indicator, fan speed adjuster, mai n sWitch, and supply cable
Th ere is also a special socket connected to dry contacts, wh ich can be used to raise
the alarm remotel y in the case of any electrica l fault , inc1uding lack of voltage from
the main power supply
An option al alarm is avallable to check the pressure of the cages relatlve lo the
room .
Th e exhaust group is composed of two fans , HEPA filter at 99.999 DO P and pre
filter, haur counter, air flaw indicator, tan speed adjuster and connection cab le to the
inpu t group.
There is al so a speclal socket connected to dry contacts, which can be used to ra ise
the alarm remotely in the case of any electrical fault , including lack af voltage fram
the maln power supply
2) The filtered alr IS distributed thro ugh a horizontal plenum , a series af vertical ducts
and valves with calibrated holes. Al! the air ducts are connected to the plenum with
re movable anti-vibralion coup li ng s The plenum is connected lo Ihe input group by a
flexib le qu ick connection
3) The exhausted alr IS extracted through valves (which are protected by a rough pre
filler) with calibrated hales, vertical ducts and a horizontal plenum , Al! the air ducts
are connected to th e ple num with removable an ti-vib ration coupllng s. T he plenum IS
connected to th e exhaust group by a flexib le quick connection
4) The corree! all gnment of the valve/cage system 15 ensured by speelal Du rethan
gu ides
5) Clear top wi th filter (O ,2p) to prevent distress to the animal in case of power fai lure
6) Self-cl osmg supply and exhaust air valves assure containment mtegrlty
7) The system is des igned to assure low speed ai r into eaeh cage « 0,2 mIs at mouse
level ),
8) The central baffle system of the clear top directs air to the fro nt af the eage
optimismg the air circu lation
9) The special seal between cage and top minim ises leakage irrespective of pressure
mode
10) The integra l bottle depresslon accommodates an externa l water bottle with in the
overall Ive ca ge footprint and pravides the animals with access to fresll water
minim ising cage opening frequency.
When the bottle is removed an automatíe closing system comes in to actian .
mainta ining the barrier integrity

11 ) The optional system to check the relative pressure is equ ipped witll a TEST CAGE
within which the pressure differen tial is read .
Test Cage is positioned in th e midd le of the upper row and is marked with a red
Tecniplast logo.
Animals ca n be housed in the Test cage
IMPORTANT
The pressure ís read through a 2-rnm hole in the TEST CAGE TOP.
Therefore the barrier between the TEST CAGE and the environment is compromised
when the TEST CAGE is removed trom the rack
13) Highly flexible configuration : accord ing to the number and size of cages con nected
to the unit, it is possible to select the fan rates using the fan speed adjuster. to
ensu re the correct Ai r Changes per Hour and Cage pressure in an y co ndition.
15) Noise level inside the cage is less than 49 d8(A) at maximum fan speed
Sealsafe individ ually ventilated cage racks descnbed in th is manual are CE marked The
identifica tíon pi ate is mounted on the upper cover of negative group.

meters per hour
4) Allow the system to reach a steady slate.
SEAbSAFE 'ye PAGE 3] m 74
IMPORTANT
Positive environment is achieved when the system is supplying more air then is
being exhausted .
Negative environment is achieved when the system is exhausting more air then is
being supplied .
5) Th e performa nces of tlle fans can be adjusted to ensure the correcl cage pressure
and air changes per hour rate in any cond itlon
Tne speed of the fans ca n be adjusted from O to their rnaximum.
To get a positive pressure, the fan setting of the supply gro up must be higher tha n
the exh aust one
Negative pressure is obtained the other way around .
Run the Sea lsafe with a higtl fan setting when a high cage density is configured , to
enable an increase'in the air circu lation and thus ttle air changes per hour (AC H)
rate o
It's importa nt to balance Ihe supply and exhaust arrflow rates in order to guarantee the
T he best condition is achieved when the differential between supply and exhaust airflow is •

!MPORTANT
It's important to observe that wh en the cages are removed from the rack, there's no air
circulation in the microenviro nment.
IMPORTANT
Empírica! studies ha ve demonstrated that in solid top cages the C02 threshold of
2,7% is reached after 22 minutes and the lethal 8,8% is reached after 135 minutes
without ventilation .
Measurements have also demonstrated that in filtered top cages the C02 threshold
of 2,7% is reached after 30 minutes whilst the maximum level reached is only 2,9% .
*
The aboye mentioned values have been measured in cages 1284L housing 5 mice
CD1 weighing approximately 35 g.
When the cages are removed from the rack, the integnty of the mlcroenviro nment is
guaran teed by the self-closing valves fitted in the cage top
ATTENTION
To protect both the animals and the personnel , Sealsafe cages must be opened only
in a changing station or in a laminar flow hood.
IMPORTANT
During the normal use of the unit do not remove more than two lines of cages per
rack .
!f only a few cages are in use, it 's necessary to fill complete!y the rack with cages
