Exam.Code:0940 Sub. Code: 7048 2071 B.E. (Mechanical Engineering) Fourth Semester MEC-403: Theory of Machines ~ II Time allowed: 3 Hours Max. Marks: 50 NOTE: Attempt five questions in all, including Question No. I which is compulsory and selecting two questions from each Part. paad 1) 1) Differentiate between simple and compound gear train with the help of diagrams? 2) What is the significance of Couple polygon and force polygon? 3) What is the importance of trace point in cams? 4) Draw all inversions of a doubte slider crank chain. 5) How does gyroscopic couple affect rolling of a naval ship? (6x2=10) PART A 2) Ina Davis steering gear, the length of the car between axles is 2.4m and steering pivots are 1.35m apart. Determine the inclination of the track arms to the longitudinal axis of the car when the card moves in a straight path. (10) -3) A horizontal gas engine running at 210 rpm has a bore of 220mm and a stroke of 440mm. The connecting rod is 924mm and reciprocating parts weigh 20kg. When the crank has turned through an angle of 30° from the inner dead centre, the gas pressures on the cover and on the crank sides are 500kN/m? and 60kN/m? respectively. If piston diameter is 40mm, then find out turning moment on the crank shaft and thrust on the bearings. (10) nA) A turbine rotor of a ship has a mass of 2.2 tonnes and rotates at 1800r.p.m. clockwise when viewing from left. Radius of gyration of rotor P.T.O. Sub. Code: 7048 Q) is 32cm. Determine gyroscopic couple and its affect when the ship turns at a radius of 250m with a speed of 25km/hr and when the ship pitches with bow rising at angular velocity 0.8rad/sec. (10) PART B 5) 2 spiral gears have a normal module of 12mm and angle between shaft axes is 60°. The driver has 16 teeth and helix angle is 25°. If the velocity ratio is 1/2 and driver and follower both are left handed, then find the centre distance between shafts. (10) - 6) Ashaft carries 5 masses- m1, m2, m3, m4, m5 which revolve at the same radius in planes which are equidistant from each other. Magnitudes of masses in planes 1, 3 and 4 are 40kg, 40kg and 80kg respectively. Determine masses in planes 2 and 5 with their positions. (10) 27) Write short notes on any 2 of the following: 1) Humpage reduction gear 2) Function and advantages of worm and worm gear. 3) Effect of friction at turning pairs on balancing (5,5)
