WHAT IS SOLENOID?
A Solenoid is a coil of wire with current running through the coil’s
wire creating a electromagnet. Hence, a solenoid is a type of
electromagnet with controlled magnetic field .It can also be classified
as a inductor rather than a electromagnet.

It is a electromechanical device made of a coil with electric current

passing through it to produce a magnetic field.
SOLENOID COIL
A solenoid is a coil wound into a tightly packed helix.
the term Solenoid refers to a long, thin loop of wire,
often wrapped around a metallic core, which
produces a magnetic field when an electric current is
passed through it. Solenoids are important because
they can create controlled magnetic fields and can be
used as electromagnets.
PARTS USED IN A SOLENOID
ENGINNE

SOLENOID COIL
CRANKSHAFT
ELECRTONIC RELAY
BATTERY
SWITCH KEY
CI PISTON

BASIC FUNCTIONING OF THE
ENGINE
Solenoid engine uses the concept of
electromagnetic field which is used to produce
magnetic force running the piston and this force
is transferred to the connecting rod which rotates
the crank shaft.
By this process the engine delivers the required
power.
WORKING OF A SOLENOID
• APPLY CURRENT
•MAGNETIC FIELD IS GENERATED
•STOP AND PLUNGER BECOMES ATTACTING MAGNETS
•MAGNETIC FORCE DERIVE PLUNGER TO STOP
SOLENOID ENGINE
 An engine which works with the help of solenoid is called
solenoid engine.

 It converts the magnetic energy produced by solenoid

into mechanical energy.

 The speed of the flywheel depends on the intensity of

magnetic field generated by solenoid. Hence, high voltage
will result in more rpm of flywheel.

 It can be constructed with simple copper wires, crank,

crankshaft, flywheel and a voltage source.
WORKING OF SOLENOID ENGINE
• Solenoid engine is a engine which works on the movement of
solenoid .

•The engine runs using a simple 12V (Lithium) battery and just
a simple flick of the flywheel.

• When we supplies the current through a coil then due to

electromagnetism it generates magnetic field around that coil.

• Due to that the rod inside get repel or attract based on the
direction of current.

• Solenoid engine the reciprocating motion of solenoid is

converted into rotary by connecting it to crank shaft through a
connecting rod.
ADVANTAGES OF SOLENOID
ENGINE
 Maintenance cost is less as compared to the
piston cylinder engine .

 Complete elimination of pollutant emission.

 Amount of power developed is constant .

 Less consumption of lubricating oil.

DISADVANTAGES OF SOLENOID
ENGINE
 More amount of Charge Required.

 Cant be used for heavy vehicles.

 More chance for Magnetic distortions.

 Less efficient than current motors.

 Use batteries wired with higher voltage because

higher voltage electromagnetics are inherently more
efficient.
