triggering.

Reading assignment ( to be completed before coming to lab)

“Power Electronics circuits devices and applications” by Muhammad H. Rashid(3rd
ed), articles 7.1-7.5
“Power Electronics” by M. Syed Jamil Asghar, article 3.4

Equipment Required
AC supply, diode 1N4004, thyristor MCR 100-6, resistors (fixed and variable) of
designed value, capacitor of designed value, oscilloscope, multi-meter, connecting
wires

(note: each student should bring his own textbook and graph papers in lab)

Calculation for R-Min, R-VAR and RL:

a) R-min
R-min value should be high enough so that gate current should not reach its
maximum value when R-var=0, so
R-min=Vsine(max)/Ig(max)
Where
Vsine(max)= maximum value of input/source voltage.
Ig(max)= maximum gate current given in the datasheet of thyristor
b) R-var
R-var is selected such that at its maximum value, minimum gate triggering
current is supplied to gate. So
Vsine >= Ig(min)*(R-min +R-var) +Vd +Vg(min)
Where
Vsine= input voltage
Ig(min)= minimum gate triggering current (from datasheet)
Vg(min)= gate voltage corresponding to Ig(min)
Vd= forward voltage drop across diode
c) RL
Value of load resistance should be such that anode to cathode current does not
exceed the rated current and is not less than the latching current when SCR is
conducting. It is recommended to select load resistance such that half of the
rated current or less flows when SCR is conducting. (Latching current and rated
current is given in datasheet).

Calculated values of resistances (Use nearest standard resistance value)

R-min=________

R-var=________

RL= _________
Procedure:

1. Arrange the circuit as shown in Figure above.

2. Keep the potentiometer resistance RG to its maximum value so IG is very small
and SCR is not triggered. Measure and observe the voltage across load and SCR.
3. Decrease the resistance of potentiometer RG such that SCR is now fired and
almost all the input voltage appears across the load. Measure and observe the
change in voltage across load and SCR
4. Record your observations for at least five-seven different firing angles over the
entire range of observation and make a table as demonstrated below. Also make
graph for each observation.
5. Compare the practical output voltage with theoretical output voltage.

Observation:

Write your observation in the space given below in the following tabular form.

Calculation for R-Min, R-VAR, R,C and RL:

a) R-min
R-min value should be high enough so that gate current should not reach its
maximum value when R-var=0, so
R-min=Vsine(max)/Ig(max)
Where
Vsine(max)= maximum value of input/source voltage.
Ig(max)= maximum gate current given in the datasheet of thyristor
b) R-var
R-var is selected such that at its maximum value minimum gate triggering current
is supplied to gate. So
Vsine >= Ig(min)*(R-min +R-var) +Vd +Vg(min)
Where
Vsine= input voltage
Ig(min)= minimum gate triggering current (from datasheet)
Vg(min)= gate voltage corresponding to Ig(min)
Vd= forward voltage drop across diode
c) R and C1,C2
An empirical relation for the product RC is given as
RC≥0.65T
Where
T= time period of the input wave
C=C1+C2 (approx)
It is recommended to take C1,C2 as 1uF each and calculate R accordingly.
d) RL
Value of load resistance should be such that anode to gate current does not
exceed the rated current and is not less than the latching current when SCR is
conducting. It is recommended to select load resistance such that half of the
rated current or less flows when SCR is conducting. (Latching current and rated
current is given in datasheet). It is recommended to take value of RL in the range
of 500-1k ohm for 10V input.
