Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Create your own Flipgrid

Content Area: Life Science
Grade Level(s): 7th
Content Standard Addressed: S7L4. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to examine the
interdependence of organisms with one another and their environments.
a. Construct an explanation for the patterns of interactions observed in different ecosystems in terms of the
relationships among and between organisms and abiotic components of the ecosystem. (Clarification

Technology Standard Addressed: ISTE Level 3 Knowledge Constructor

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☐ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☒ Other: Flipgrid

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☒ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☒ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy Level(s):

Levels of Technology Integration: (Select the one best level) (Delete red instructions before adding to your

selection. DO NOT use highlighting to select your choice.)

☒ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☐ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
The instructional activities prior will be whatever lessons go along with the standard being used for the SRT
activity. Videos, workbook assignments, group work, formative assessments, etc.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☒ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and

mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity: The students will watch the Flipgrid video
provided by the teacher that contains the questions that are to be answered. The teacher will explain the
activity and what needs to be accomplished, which is creating their own Flipgrid video in which they answer
the questions provided. A device with internet access and a camera is required to complete this activity. If a
student does not have access to one at home then one will be provided to them. This activity is to be
completed at home between classes, as it would not be practical to have 30 different students recording
voiced videos in the class simultaneously.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☐ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☒ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☒ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10): See
provided Flipgrid video for student questions.

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☐ Yes ☐ No
☒ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☐ Yes
☒ No
Why or why not? This is not practical for Flipgrid. Each Flipgrid will be graded by the teacher afterwards, as
there will be a few open-ended questions.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity? After the activity, students will share and reflect on
their answers as a class. Afterwards, students will discuss the different answers they provided for the open-
ended questions.

How will the data be used? This activity is used to get the students familiar with Flipgrid as well as to collect
data for how the students are performing. This activity is a pass/fail grade and the data will be collected by
the teacher for the purpose of gauging what content students need more help with. The data will not be used
to differentiate for specific students but will be used to decide which content needs a longer or more in-depth
lesson plan. For example, if most of the students miss a certain question, then more time should be spent
teaching the content that question involves.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

I am using Flipgrid to record responses to specific questions. I want to see how students respond using verbal
answers as opposed to written. I have never used Flipgrid for something like this, but I have used Flipgrid as a
student and can see its value. I hope this activity will help students discuss and reflect on the answers of their
peers. By doing so, students can learn directly from their peers as opposed to learning from the teacher.

Reflective Practice:
I think that this activity could be helpful because it gets students acquainted with Flipgrid and gets them
thinking more about other tools that can be used as a student. This way the students can create their own

unique artifact that can easily be viewed by classmates. Students can easily discuss answers and learn from
each other. I could extend this activity by adding another tool such as Kahoot! to have a friendly competition
to see which students can answer the most questions correctly the quickest.
