Charotar University of Science and Technology (CHARUSAT) is one of the leading

universities of Gujarat. It was established under Gujarat Private University Act 2009 and
recognized under section 2F of UGC Act 1956.

CHARUSAT has been conceived by Shri Charotar Moti Sattavis Patidar Kelavani Mandal to
put India on global education map by making Charotar – the Land of Sardar Patel, a Global
Education Hub. Kelavani Mandal, established in 1994, is a not-for-profit premier trust of India
that works with the aim of providing social service through education. The organization has a
social lineage of more than 125 years.

Looking at the opportunities accruing from Liberalization, Privatization and Globalization for
National Development, Kelavani Mandal envisioned CHARUSAT Campus. Importantly,
CHARUSAT has the objectives of bringing world-class education to the students at their door-
steps, giving thrust on Research and Development and becoming a University which is relevant
to the society. CHARUSAT aspires to be among the top Universities at National Level and
then, in the long run, to be a World Class University.

Importantly, CHARUSAT is the First Private University in Gujarat that has been awarded
Grade “A” by NAAC - National Assessment and Accreditation Council in the very first cycle
with a CGPA of 3.11 (out of 5) effective for 5 Years from May 25, 2016. Further, CHARUSAT
has been ranked among the top 3 Private Universities of Gujarat by National Institute of Ranking
Framework (NIRF), Government of India. At the national level, CHARUSAT ranks among top
101 - 150 Universities. CHARUSAT has also been one of Top 3 Private Universities with 4
Stars in Gujarat State Institutional Ranking Framework (GSIRF) 2020.

Programs offered by CHARUSAT fall under the ambit of different faculties. They are: Faculty
of Technology and Engineering, Faculty of Computer Science and Applications, Faculty of
Pharmacy, Faculty of Management Studies, Faculty of Science, and Faculty of Medical
Sciences.

The journey at CHARUSAT Campus started as a single Institute in the year 2000 with the
establishment of Charotar Institute of Technology (now Chandubhai S Patel Institute of
Technology (CSPIT)) with Programs in Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering,
Information Technology, Civil Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering
and Electrical Engineering. Year after year institutes and programs were added. Lastly,
looking at the demand of Engineering Education, another Engineering Institute was started on
Campus in 2018. The Institute offers undergraduate programs in the emerging areas of
Computer Engineering and Information Technology.

The development journey began in 2000 only with 240 students, 4 programs, 1 institute and an
investment of Rs. 3 Crores. Presently, CHARUSAT offers more than 51 Programs at 9
different institutes under the tutelage of 6 Faculties. CHARUSAT has a student strength of
7500, employee strength of 550 and a capital outlay of Rs. 125 Crores. All of the capital
expenses are met through the donations received from different patrons. So far, more than 2200
philanthropists have donated towards the development of the campus. Similarly, 95% of the
operational / revenue expenses are met with the fees received from the students.

CHARUSAT is proud to continue practicing the High Moral Values carved by Kelavani
Mandal. It works with a Commitment to: Honesty, Integrity and Transparency. Though
CHARUSAT is an unaided university, no donations are taken in admissions and recruitments.
Transparency is demonstrated at all levels through management practices in processes like
admission, recruitment, accounts and purchase.

In preparation for future planning, the university invested significant time and effort to conduct
a thorough assessment of internal strengths and constraints as well as an external review of
opportunities and challenges. One of the analyses found from the assessment was the decreasing
numbers of the student admissions in the Engineering Programs at Chandubhai S. Patel
Institute of Technology. It was found that the student enrollment in the core Engineering
Branches – Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, EC Engineering, and Mechanical
Engineering are constantly decreasing over the last 3-4 years. University has dedicated many
efforts for the promotion and branding. However, after the admission process in this academic
year 2020-21, more than 60% of the seats of the said branches are vacant. On the contrary, seats
in Computer Engineering and Information Technology are easily filled. Further, the challenges
posed by Covid ’19 makes it even more difficult for the Management to run those programs
with all existing expenses.

Question:
In the light of the given situation, suggest the future measures CHARUSAT should take as a
University. This may cover dimensions like sustainability, growth plans, program portfolios,
ranking, brand image, etc.

All the Best!
