Lesson Plan in Mathematics 8

1st Quarter

 Content Standards: The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of

circles and coordinate geometry.
 Performance Standards: The learner is able to formulate and find solutions to
challenging situations involving circles and other related terms in different
disciplines through appropriate and accurate representations .
 Learning Competencies: The learner will be able to derive inductively the
relations among chords, arcs, central angles, and inscribed angles.

I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of 60 minutes, the Grade 10 – Burgos can:

a. identify the numerical coefficients of the general trinomial of the form
Ax2 + Bx + C
b. factor out general trinomials of the form Ax2 + Bx + C completely and
correctly
c. appreciate the concepts of factoring general trinomials applied in real-life
problems

II. SUBJECT MATTER :

A. Subject: Mathematics 8
B. Topic: Factoring General Trinomials
C. References : C.G. Page 180, Grade 8 Mathematics (Patterns and Practicalities) by
Gladys C. Nivera, Ph.D., pages 34 – 43.
D. Materials: White board, marker, projector, algebraic tiles, laptop

III. INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURE

 Preliminaries:
 Prayer
 Greetings
 Setting of Classroom Standard
 Checking of Attendance
 Checking of Assignments
 Review on Factoring Perfect Square Trinomials
 Motivation: Ignite the interest of the students through asking questions

 Lesson Proper:
A. Activities
 The students will be grouped into five. Each group will be given algebraic
tiles and let them do the “Match Up” activity in 10 minutes. (Please see
attachment.)

B. Analysis
 After the activity the students will be asked:
1. What do you think was the activity all about?
2. How did you come up with the correct factors of an expression?
3. Can we apply this activity in real life situation? Cite some examples.

C. Abstraction
 How did you find the factors of general trinomials? What method did you
use?
 Discuss how to factor general trinomials of the form Ax2 + Bx + C using the
Guess and Check Method.

 To factor Ax2 + Bx + C:
1. Look for a common factor.
2. Factor the first term, Ax2
3. Factor the last term, C
4. Look for factors in (2) and (3) such that the sum of their products is
the middle term, Bx.

 Is there another method of factoring general trinomials of the form

Ax2 + Bx + C? What would be that method and how could we use it?
 Discuss how to factor general trinomials of the form Ax2 + Bx + C using the
Grouping Number Method.

 To factor Ax2 + Bx + C using the Grouping Number Method:

1. Find the grouping number AC.
2. Find the factors of the grouping number whose sum is B.
3. Use those factors to write Bx as the sum of two terms.
4. Factor by grouping.

 The teacher will provide examples.

D. Application
 For further practice of the lesson, the class will have a competitive game
called “Math House Construction”. The students will do this activity with the
same groupings. Each group is provided with white board and marker.
 Game Mechanics:

The game is composed of two parts.

 1st part: Each group will be given 1 minute to answer the 4 or 5 items.
Their final answer shall be written on the white board. The group who will
fail to raise the answer before the timer stops will be disqualified.
 2nd Part: In this part of the game, the speed and accuracy of each group
is tested. The fastest group to answer the question shall have the
chance to choose ONE of the two options: either to add one stick to their
math house or erase one stick from one of their opponents’ math house.
Scoring: During the first part of the game, a correct answer is equivalent to
one stick for the math house construction. The first group to complete the
math house will be the winner of the game.

IV. ASSESSMENT

In ¼ sheet of paper, answer the items below.

A. Factor each expression completely and correctly. If the expression is not

factorable, write prime.
1. 3x2 – 4x – 7 3. –7x +2 + 3 x2
2. 8x2 – 24x – 80 4. 2x3 – 7x2 + 3x

B. For item number 5, analyze the problem and show the solution to your
answer.
5. Find the dimensions of the rectangle whose area is (6x 2 +8x +1) cm2 and
whose perimeter is 34 cm.

V. ASSIGNMENT/AGREEMENT
 Answer numbers 41-50 on page 45 of your book. (1/2 Crosswise)
 Read in advance on pages 47-50 of your book and try to answer item
number 1 on page 51.
