We must pay attention to this table when we are doing question tag.
STATEMENT QUESTION
TAG
+ -
- +
The table tells us that the statement and the question tag are always in opposite form. If the
statement or sentence is in positive form, the question tag must be in negative form.
Otherwise if the statement or sentence is in negative form, it means that the question tag is in
positive form.
I AM
IMPERATIVES &
The negative question tag "am I not" INVITATIONS
has no contraction. Because a
question tag with no contraction After an imperative we use "will
sounds very pedantic, we prefer a you?" (always affirmative). We can
very ungrammatical constraction but consider "will you?" as an
which is correct for question tags: equivalent to "please" (more or
"aren't I?" less)
- I'm late, aren't I? - Open the door, will you?
- I'm talking to the walls, aren't I? - Don't smoke in this room, will
you?
SUGGESTIONS - Come to my party, will you?
After a sentence with Let's... we use - Have a coffee, will you?
"shall we?" - Don't look at me like that, will
- Let's go out for a walk, shall we? you?
- Let's study tomorrow morning,
shall we?
